to be seriously considering giving up on GBBO?

FancyPantSusan · 26/09/2018 17:18

I've always been a devoted GBBO fan.

However, I'm really struggling to cope with the C4 version.

I absolutely hate the adverts and I don't think the programme is gripping enough to cope with adverts. I find myself chatting with DH during the adverts then carrying on our conversation over the top of GBBO when it comes back on. When it was on BBC with no adverts, me and DH never uttered a word Grin

I find Noel Fielding very tiresome. He's just not particularly funny and his childish "I have no idea what baking is, I'm just going to stand near you and make jokes" interactions with the contestants I'm finding quite hard to put up with. Having said that, I always found Sue Perkins to be a bit of a knob so I guess I can't be too harsh on Noel.

I'm also finding this year's crop of contestants very challenging. It seems to be edging towards a typical C4 "personality parade" and I can't help but feel that some people are putting on a bit of a show for the cameras. We have:
Kim Joy's "Oh I'm so crazy and whacky but also a little bit adorable";
Ruby's "I'm completely gorgeous look at my pout. Oh a little swear word slipped out accidentally on purpose. Aren't I naughty and foul mouthed and hilarious";
Jon's "Look at my loud Hawaiian shirt, I'm clearly crazy and a really good laugh. Oh and I love my daughters, aren't I just swell?";
Karen's "I'm also hilarious. I'm an older woman very painfully and performatively not giving a shit. Wasn't it hilarious when I sat shoveling crisps into my gob when everyone else was still cooking that one week? See, told you, hilarious";
Briony's "Oh look, I'm so lovely and mumsy"
Rahul's "I'm still learning lots about the UK and, conveniently, fitting into the cultural stereotype of the acceptable immigrant. I'm very quiet and apologetic and that makes me adorable"

I really need to give up on this programme I think. Who's with me?!

I'm still enjoying it. I don't miss Mary Berry chewing away and talking with a mouthful of cake and although I thought I'd miss Mel & Sue, I think Sandy and Noel work well together and I like them.

The contestants are just as hit and miss as they always were - there are annoying ones, crap ones and ones I really like - I'm particularly loving Rahul and Kim Joy.

I also hate adverts, so record & watch on catch up.

Serialweightwatcher · 26/09/2018 19:32

I think they're all great and really enjoying it - I record it so can fast forward the ads thank goodness ... they all seem nice and they probably are

ToadOfSadness · 26/09/2018 19:36

I have stopped watching Extra Slice because of the bouncing pillock with the waving arms. Used to look forward to it but what a twat he is.

I am not keen on Pru Leith, about as keen as I was on her restaurant with the over salted food and the lack of atmosphere, everyone whispering and glaring the other diners.

I miss Mary Berry, tried to like Noel Fielding and almost managed it in the first series but this time I find him incredibly irritating wiv his awful pronunciation of almost everyfink.

Used to Like Sandy, many years ago, then went off her but she seems to be the only person on the programme that knows what they are doing.

Kim-Joy, why on earth does she make herself up like a clown, hard to take her seriously? The French girl is a version of the gurning woman that won a while ago, 'Oh look at me, me, me' and the crisp eater is awful, just aaarrgghhh, hoping she will be gone soon. The others are OK.

Clionba · 26/09/2018 19:39

Karen went out last night.

LittleBearPad · 26/09/2018 19:41

I never watch it live so whizz through the ads

I love Noel and Sandi. Prue’s cool. Paul isn’t

VickyEadie · 26/09/2018 19:43

omg i love that guy on extra slice

Me too - Tom Allen has revitalised a format that had got seriously stale and was suffering (like GBBO) from ad breaks.

Serialweightwatcher · 26/09/2018 19:46

I love Tom Allen too Grin

Loonoon · 26/09/2018 19:51

I skip the ads but apart from that I love this series. Rahul is a joy, Ruby is a petulant brat. Everyone else seems great. They have also skipped the boring ‘history of food’ bit.

I haven’t seen last nights yet, but last weeks with the roulades and blancmanges (did you know if you mispell Blancmange it auto corrects to foreskin? I’m glad I spotted that one!) was a total joy. I was crying with happiness by the end of the showstopper round. They were all so creative and talented. For once I agreed with the judges decision.

Gitfeatures · 26/09/2018 19:52

It's only seeing old episodes on 'Really' that I realise how much of Mel & Sue's presenting was about them, rather than the contestants
They really should have gotten rid of Hollywood when they moved over the channel 4, he really is an absolute bellend.

I think Rahul is getting a bit of backlash due to the editing - I refuse to believe that someone so supposedly lacking in self-belief would survive such a process. And Dan really is being positioned as the 'baddie' this year with his smug face and dramatic sighs.

PoxAlert · 26/09/2018 19:52

I really like it this year.

There's a few bakers with some real promise and to be honest I find Prue, Noel and Sandy just as good as the original line up. Paul was and is my least favourite of the 4 anyway.

After this week's leavers I'm looking even more forward to next week.

Don't mind the adverts. Gives me a chance to put the kettle on and grab more cake! Grin

Malbecfan · 26/09/2018 20:09

I didn't watch it last year, other than a couple of episodes on a delayed plane journey then the final.

I prefer Prue to Mary. I had heard of Prue before GBBO but not of Mary. Prue seems to stand up to the vain tosspot that is Paul. I have liked Sandi as a broadcaster for years. I didn't really know Noel but he seems kind and suitably wacky and it works for me.

As far as the contestants are concerned, I can't stand Rahul. I keep hoping that he will mess up and be booted off. He goes on and on about India - fine, go on Great INDIAN bake-off then - oh, does it actually exist? I think Kim Joy is deeply irritating too. Karen was annoying but at least she's gone now. Other than them, I don't mind who wins as long as it's not Rahul or Kim Joy.

ivykaty44 · 26/09/2018 20:13

If it’s making you unhappy, probably better to switch off and read a book instead - good luck

catdoctor · 26/09/2018 20:16

I’m enjoying it - but I think the issue is that there’s only so many times you can spin the same formula.
It’s still the same show as on BBC.

PuppyMonkey · 26/09/2018 20:19

I’m another one not able to get into it this year. TBH, it’s not particularly the adverts or the presenters or even the contestants. I’m just a bit bored with the show now. Think it’s starting to show its age and the formula is getting zzzzz now.

ToadOfSadness · 26/09/2018 20:19

Karen went out last night.

Not seen it yet, I tend to forget about it now, whereas I used to look forward to it.

Trillis · 26/09/2018 20:19

I'm perfectly happy with it on C4 too. I like Sandy and Noel, and Pru. Too many Hollywood handshakes this year though. I record it, and it's great how the ad breaks are all exactly 2 mins long, so I just have to skip forward twice on the remote (it's really annoying on other programmes when the breaks are longer/shorter so I keep having to skip backwards/forwards to find the start of the programme).

And I too miss the GB Sewing Bee and the Great Pottery Throw Down. :(

HashTagLil · 26/09/2018 20:21

I’m one of those (rare) people who refused to watch it once it moved to C4.

We're the same in this house. We still watch reruns of the BBC version and love it.

Blankiefan · 26/09/2018 20:28

Yup - pause it at the start and go for a pee/ make a brew and some toast / hang up a washing then watch it and FF past the ads.

HildaZelda · 26/09/2018 20:36

@Gitfeatures, YES! Mel and Sue was completely all about them. Sue in particular I really didn't like her. With Noel and Sandi it's about the contestants. I love Noel. He's just so gentle and polite with the contestants. Sue was a pushy pain.

I love little Rahul. I really do think he's that shy and lacking in confidence. I like Jon too and I was sorry to see Terry go. His bakes weren't the best, but he just seemed like such a gentleman.

Yogagirl123 · 26/09/2018 20:40

I miss Mary too, DS call Prue the fake Mary 😂

Dobson4675 · 26/09/2018 20:46

I'm bored too. Much prefer Prue to Mary but not a fan of Sandy & Noel.

theOtherPamAyres · 26/09/2018 20:51

PH, with his hands deep in his trousers, fiddling with his balls pocket change ......and then reaching out to shake someone's hands.
Eeeugh Confused

He's got to be the slimiest slug eva.

Like Pru, Sandi and Noel but I think I'll skip the episodes until we reach the final four. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2018 20:53

sewing bee is back next year,

Thank heavens for that - I thought the day would never come!

I like Prue much more thanMary - I thought Mary was like the child-catcher off Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Didn't like her at all.

Also, she was too thin to be credible as someone who likes food. (Never trust a thin cook . . . Grin)

MotherofPearl · 26/09/2018 21:15

When I’m sad I watch clips of val to cheer me up.

Yes! DD and I often fondly remember Val asking her bakes if they're ready. And doing her steps.

Butterymuffin · 26/09/2018 21:19

I was very worried when it moved but was pleasantly surprised and I'm loving this series. So many nice contestants. I like Noel and Sandi, and Prue. Paul's just Paul Hmm

Totally agree with
It's only seeing old episodes on 'Really' that I realise how much of Mel & Sue's presenting was about them, rather than the contestants
Definitely.
