AIBU - To smell cigarette smoke constantly?

HabbyHadno · 19/09/2018 20:44

So maybe not AIBU, but my nose is definitely BU. For the past four days I've been smelling cigarette smoke constantly wherever I go and I can't for the life of me work out what's going on.
I don't smoke, no one that smokes has been in my house, no one in my family smokes. Has anyone else had this? What is it about? It's so strong that it's making my nose hurt. Have I lost the plot or do I need to seek some sort of medical advice?

Not trying to scare you at all and disclaimer...i have zero medical knowledge but I did read on here before that you should seek medical treatment for that.

I have that all the time, have for a couple of years now. Drives me crazy!!

HabbyHadno · 19/09/2018 20:51

I don't think I'm pregnant, I've got two kids and haven't had anything like this before when I've been pregnant.

Has this only happened recently to you too Twinkle?

At certain times of the month all I can smell is smelly feet. It’s like the stink is stuck up my nose.
I’m menopausal and this started around peri menopause. So for me I think it’s hormonal.

It could be that you have a sinus infection. I smell bizarre things when I get them and it's starting to get to that time of year. You can have them without necessarily being sniffly/having a cold. One way to potentially check is if you breathe out your nose and it smells really bad I learnt this the hard way 🤢

Babydontcry · 19/09/2018 21:00

Don't want to alarm you but might be worth getting checked out at Gp

Gillian1980 · 19/09/2018 21:02

Only when I was pregnant!

Nad1122 · 19/09/2018 21:03

Are you under a lot of stress? I had this for a while when I was having a very tricky time in my life a few years ago.

I would definitely see your GP for advice.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 19/09/2018 21:07

This can be a precursor to Migraine.

In the past I have had such symptoms as a result of Sinus infection and prior to migraine.

Now I have totally lost my sense of smell, but believe it is due to heart drugs that I have to take. I can't even smell my perfume when I put it on in the morning !!

HabbyHadno · 19/09/2018 21:38

I've never had a migraine, so hopefully not that. I guess it could be a sinus infection, haven't noticed any bad smells when I breathe out though. I'll give it a week and then maybe pop to the doctors if it is still there. It's the most bizarre thing.

I went through a phase about 6 months ago of constantly smelling smoke. I drove DH nuts asking him if he could smell it. It just stopped all of a sudden. It is a pain and really irritating.

spugzbunny · 19/09/2018 21:45

Could it be to do with the storm? Maybe bringing over dust that your brain is interpreting as cig smoke?

InstagramPork · 19/09/2018 21:48

It could be an olfactory hallucination which are often linked to migraines or sinus infections

HabbyHadno · 19/09/2018 21:51

Thepink - I think my DH is about to kill me if I mention it again. I've kept it to myself tonight Grin

MissCharleyP · 19/09/2018 21:53

It happened to me, but only in my car. Eventually I found a cig butt stuck in the groove in my work shoes! If it’s everywhere I’d get it checked out though.

mummy2oneandtwo · 19/09/2018 21:57

Do you have new black jeans you're wearing?

I know it sounds crazy but I had this once and finally realised it was the new jeans, I took them back and all the black jeans smelt the same from that store, I don't know if it's part of the dying process, but I couldn't wear them due to the overpowering smell!!

Thatstheendofmytether · 19/09/2018 21:57

I think I read something about that a while ago OP. You should maybe see a doctor.

Notanother1 · 19/09/2018 22:04

A colleague had this for ages, turned out he had and infection, MRSA I think - had to have antibiotics which cleared it.

Flev · 19/09/2018 22:09

I immediately wondered if you were pregnant - it happened to me and drove me insane for the first 3-4 months of pregnancy!

Aqua25 · 19/09/2018 22:29
