AIBU - To smell cigarette smoke constantly?

HabbyHadno · 19/09/2018 20:44

So maybe not AIBU, but my nose is definitely BU. For the past four days I've been smelling cigarette smoke constantly wherever I go and I can't for the life of me work out what's going on.
I don't smoke, no one that smokes has been in my house, no one in my family smokes. Has anyone else had this? What is it about? It's so strong that it's making my nose hurt. Have I lost the plot or do I need to seek some sort of medical advice?

I had that a couple of weeks ago, except it was a burnt oven smell. It was the start of a very bad sinus infection. It went away after about a week.

Els1e · 19/09/2018 22:36

That’s weird. I’ve had the exact same thing the last couple of months. I keep thinking I can smell cigarette smoke. Been interesting to read some of the views. I have had a migraine about 3 weeks ago, which is unusual for me.

HabbyHadno · 20/09/2018 10:56

Maybe it's just something to do with the change of season if a few people have had it? Bizarre.

Hi HabbyHadno
Did you ever make a GP appointment? I have the same thing, been going on for 2+ years...
thanks

HabbyHadno · 28/11/2018 14:52

No, I didn't. It went away on its own in the end. I think it might have been the disinfectant we were using on the kitchen floor

This is a sign I have a sinus infection maybe the same for you.

ichifanny · 03/01/2019 22:46

It’s likely the cold or a busy infection

ichifanny · 03/01/2019 22:46

Sinus not busy

ISmellBabies · 03/01/2019 22:50

Do you have a chimney / open fire, even if you don't actually use it? Sometimes I can smell a smoke kind of smell when it's windy, even though we haven’t lit a fire in years!

christmasisuponus · 03/01/2019 22:55

I can smell cigarette smoke too, nobody smokes but I have had blocked sinuses and chest infection for 2 weeks so guessing it that. It's so bloody strange though 😳

winteryslippers · 03/01/2019 22:56

Could be a ghost .... sometimes they say spirits manifest through a scent like smoke or perfume

winteryslippers · 03/01/2019 22:56

I mean.... I know it's highly unlikely

Travisandthemonkey · 03/01/2019 22:58

Brain tumour

HabbyHadno · 03/01/2019 23:02

Let's jump to the worst conclusion shall we Travis? Wink

Brain tumour

Shit! I also have major health anxiety SadShockConfused

HabbyHadno · 03/01/2019 23:09

I thought it was a sign of a stroke when you smelled burning?

It could be a sinus thing I guess, but I've had an infection before and it came with a horrendous pressure headache so not sure it's that.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2019 23:12

Bloody hell Travis.

ReanimatedSGB · 03/01/2019 23:15

Ghost, my arse: there's no such thing.
OP, have you bought new binliners lately? Have you bought a different brand of binliners? Some black binliners smell like fag ends; it's something to do with the type of black plastic they are made of. (Causes no end of trouble for ebay sellers...)

Fumnudge · 03/01/2019 23:24

I highly suspect mine is nose polyps. Sorry but I've had it for years, recently the smell has occasionally changed to skunk if its been raining which I find worse.
I did see the doctor as I was up for another issue, she was puzzled but not concerned (I had already been experiencing it for a couple of years so kind of guessed not a tumourWink).
Hopefully yours won't last as long but you do get used to it, though I do worry there will be a fire and I'll ignore it.

TheDogsMother · 03/01/2019 23:31

A friend of mine had similar when she smelled wood smoke constantly. Turned out it was a long standing infection which was cured with a course of antibiotics.

KatherinaMinola · 03/01/2019 23:33

Burnt toast is a sign of epilepsy, isn't it?

userschmoozer · 03/01/2019 23:38

I was going to say black bin liners, but we also had this problem with Ecover fabric softener. DS was accused of smoking by a teacher.

MyHomeworkAteMyDog · 03/01/2019 23:43

The day before my stroke I could smell burnt toast it was horrific and nobody else could smell it.

Lucked · 03/01/2019 23:47

I had a fishy smell when the plastic around a light fitting started to corrode, no one could smell it but me. Do you smell it more in the evenings when the lights are on?

Neither of you got new perfume/ aftershave for Christmas did you? I have a few with really smokey basenotes which last ages on clothes
