To think that in the current dire state of the NHS finances it's a no brainer that first priority for mastectomies goes to cancer patients?

Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of whether the NHS or any doctor should ever be doing a mastectomy on a very young person with gender dysphoria, there is no question at all that a woman diagnosed with breast cancer needs treatment as top priority. (Or a man, in the very rare cases where a man gets breast cancer.)

The tweet I've attached is outrageously insensitive. The person concerned is using a mass blocker on Twitter so will never see most of the responses it's getting (mostly very negative indeed). Life in an echo chamber.

It's very worrying also to see the insistence that getting this surgery, that drug, has to happen right away or the person concerned will self-harm, maybe even try to commit suicide. This is very irresponsible. Ideas that like get hold from constant repetition.

I am autistic and am glad that I was never to subjected to that kind of pressure as a teenager. I have never had any doubts about my sex -although I do not fit gender stereotypes - but for years I would have given anything to "belong"

I would too, and the thought that some people are taking advantage of vulnerable teenagers who deserve to be protected is appalling.

Like you TerfsUp as an adult I don’t care any more if I belong, but as a teen I did care, deeply. It’s just an unbelievably abusive and manipulative thing to do. I genuinely can’t think of strong enough words against people who would even consider that.

I did also demand that that particular group’s literature was removed from my son’s school. A school for autistic children!

BettyDuMonde · 18/09/2018 14:21

There is a 7 year wait list for adult mental health services in Manchester.

Even those aging out of CAMHS at 18 go on the same list.

This effectively means that there is no mental health service for anyone between 18 and 25.

Services such as occupational therapy for autistic children with sensory processing disorder have a 3 year wait.

The assertion that transpeople are being treated unfairly is patently untrue - everyone is waiting.

The NHS is absolutely awesome when you have a truly life threatening condition - clearly those who decide clinical need within the NHS do not believe untreated gender dysphoria is an urgent threat to life.

Agree with those who’ve said threatening suicide is a form of abuse. Those who threaten suicide as part of coercive control are statistically more likely to commit partner homicide too. If anyone is experiencing this right now, please, get help, get out.

I think it's rather ironic that he's saying he won't die waiting... seemingly ignoring the fact that cancer patients can and do die waiting on a regular basis!
I imagine there are plenty of decent trans people that would be more than understanding about this and probably think this guy is a selfish tosser.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/09/2018 14:34

This is an insult to every woman who's ever suffered from breast cancer. Also, what in the name of god is an "unperson", and why would you call yourself one?

BettyDuMonde · 18/09/2018 14:42

I think the ‘unperson’ is the plastic skeleton Toby is taking to Toby’s planned protest of Toby’s terribly unfair treatment.

Toby is going to try and guilt the NHS England board at Skipton House with implied suicide threats.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/09/2018 14:45

If they don't give Toby what Toby wants they may have a dead person on their hands (but probably not). If they do give Toby what Toby wants then they will definitely have dead women on their hands, and grieving relatives asking pointed questions about why a cosmetic procedure was given higher priority.

FloralBunting · 18/09/2018 14:51

I doubt Toby will get their own way on this - even in the current climate, even the most achingly right on politician or policy maker would see what a stupid priority shift it would be with limited resources.

But that's grist to the mill for Toby et al, because it will help the 'most oppressed people in the world evar' narrative that they keep their acolytes hooked with.

Bowlofbabelfish · 18/09/2018 14:58

Trans people need healthcare. Counselling, hormones, voice therapy, facial feminisation surgery, transmasculine mastectomies (top), and whatever we might fancy doing below the waist that isn’t anyone’s business but our own.

Of that list only counselling is healthcare.

The rest are cosmetic choices.,

Insightful comment from cesira above. Asking who benefits from this is something I’ve wondered. Ditto the neutering of debating ability. We’ve created a generation who have swallowed this no debate crap, who no platform speakers and who seem incapable of rational argument. They cannot debate so they simply use authoritarian tactics (calling people transphobes, harassment, suicide threats) to make people toe the line.

I’ve wondered before what would happen when people with zero psychological resistance to physical hardship, zero psychological resistance to mental hardship, a dependency on technology and an inability to argue and debate will do when confronted with Something Really Bad. Like a genuinely repressive government, war/plague/famine etc.

They’d be very easy to control, anyway.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/09/2018 15:13

If you're paying for it yourself you might argue that it's nobody's business but your own. If a cash strapped NHS is paying for it then it's everyone's business.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/09/2018 15:14

Cesire's point bears repeating

These people are going to be rejected and pushed away their whole lives with this as their expressed outlook. They will think it is because they are trans. They won't ever realise it is because they have been helped into becoming truly unlikable humans.

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/09/2018 15:15

YANBU OP. I am Shock that any adult with a modicum of intelligence would put this view out to the public! I won't die waiting, yep, that's why cancer patients are rightly given priority.

What a complete knob end.

YeTalkShiteHen · 18/09/2018 15:18

“I won’t die waiting”

Well quite. Back of the queue for you!

Cutesbabasmummy · 18/09/2018 15:18

I'm disgusted by that tweet OP!

Purpleartichoke · 18/09/2018 15:28

After cancer patients, should be women who have real physical problems from their breasts: Back pain, recurrent infections, etc.

If they are all taken care of and there is still room on the surgical schedule, well then there is time for cosmetic procedures.

Racecardriver · 18/09/2018 15:37

Honestly, this whole trans people are at risk of suicide thing is starting to get a little the boy who cried wolf. If you are actually suicidal then please go and get some real help (a mastectomy won't fix serious psychological issues), if you aren't suicidal then stop using other people's mental health problems for your owm gain, that's just sick.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/09/2018 15:41

The sheer narcissism of TRAs is frequently staggering

but placing their wishes for cosmetic changes above the need of a cancer patient to avoid death

is a new low

All medical needs should come before cosmetic wishes / optional mutilation
... if indeed taxpayers wish to shell out any extra for the latter

Amortentia · 18/09/2018 15:42

It’s such an entitled view point isn’t it, me, me, me.

I can’t believe the NHS will pay to cut away healthy tissue, or put in implants on request. I ask my GP is she thought I would qualify for a reduction as my neck and shoulders are damaged from lugging around very large breasts. I was told to forget it, unless I can pay privately there is nothing I can do. Bit annoying that if I declared myself a man I might then qualify.

HelenaDove · 18/09/2018 16:30

Good grief IMO

Cancer patients should be No 1 priority END OF!!!

There are also other groups that should come after the cancer patients but before Toby.

Including people who have lost lots of weight and are left with a lot of loose skin folds that keep getting infected Which means they are at risk of serious infection. But a lot of people in this group are being refused.

There are many groups with needs greater than Tobys.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 18/09/2018 18:25

Just a quick apology to whoever it was (I'm afraid I can't remember) who started the thread in Feminist Chat which inspired this thread. Somebody there said it should be put in AIBU so I did, but I didn't expect the original thread to be deleted because there were now two threads on the same topic. This has happened umpteen times in my years on MN - new rule, MN?

OP posts:
TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 18/09/2018 18:27

Sigh. What I mean is that having duplicate/triplicate/multiple threads on the same topic has happened umpteen times, without all but one being deleted, which is what has happened today.

OP posts:
sanluca · 18/09/2018 18:30

One rule for mn, one rule for anything trans related.

The tweet is disgusting btw and I don't know who said it, but if you are that suicidal, having a breast operation won't fix your mental health problems.

FunSponges · 18/09/2018 18:30

Oh ffs. Die waiting. What a load of self indulgent twaddle.

If it bothers them that much they can save and go private. Bet they would manage if NHS wasn't even an option.

DryHeave · 18/09/2018 18:35

I’m blocked. I’ve never posted on Twitter about anything trans. I follow a broad spectrum of people, including both TRAs & TERFs. Wow. You can’t even wish to witness the debate on both sides without being blocked.

Ereshkigal · 18/09/2018 18:39

If you follow gender critical feminists, you'll get block listed whatever your views. They won't stick around to find out.

Ereshkigal · 18/09/2018 18:40

I hope the press turn up en masse to cover Toby's protest.
