Can someone please tell me why shows like big brother and other shows pretty my always have a trans person on them
They represent 0.1 of the population

But you rarely see any disabled or even Chinese people who make up a larger percent of the population

The have two mixed raced people
And one trans in the big brother house

Their are no black
Disabled or Asian
No one from Northern Ireland
No one from any of the islands jersey ect

Maybe not on this show, but they have had Irish people before also once had a blind person, think his name was mikey, tho i could be wrong about the name, the irish guy i think was a firefighter called johnny, got a feeling he was in the same one as jade goody

JorahsMistress · 15/09/2018 19:38

There have been other irish people on there, just cant remember their names 😂

MyNewBearTotoro · 15/09/2018 19:41

Some of it likely depends on who has applied, the applications received probably don’t have the same representation of different minority groups as the general population. Although only 0.1% of the population are trans the percentage of trans applicants could be much higher.

There may be cultural reasons as to why people from some minority demographics are more or less likely to apply to appear onreality shows than those from other demographics. It may also be that certain personality types are more likely to apply to reality TV shows (eg: confident, outspoken extroverts are probably more likely to apply than shy, self-conscious introverts) and again different minority groups may be more/ less likely to have people with these personality traits. Some people might even be excluded from being able to apply, for example if somebody had a disability which would require major adaptations to be made to the Big Brother house they might not be able to apply.

Also, these shows are crafted to get high ratimgs. Producers may see a trans person as more likely to get high ratings than somebody from a different minority and so they might favour trans people, in the same way you see a lot more young and attractive women who’ve had plastic surgery or young body-building men on TV than you’re likely to meet in real life.

1981fishgut · 15/09/2018 19:42

They have had one disabled person on what 16 years

How many trans people have they ducking had on

And currently this and many shows seemly need have trans representation when they barely have disabled people or even other groups who are more of the population

OP posts:
hidinginthenightgarden · 15/09/2018 19:43

Maybe not enough of those minorities are applying for the show?

They don't pick people based on ethnicity etc, they pick them based on how entertaining they are.

1981fishgut · 15/09/2018 19:43

MyNewBearTotoro

So basically they seem them as a novelty likey to cause a stir

OP posts:
BettyCrook · 15/09/2018 19:43

maybe its hidden disability?
blacks is offensive.

there were black and asian contestants yes.

1981fishgut · 15/09/2018 19:44

BettyCrook

Possibly some groups of people have more sense/better taste than to apply?

Methe · 15/09/2018 19:45

They’ve probably got more sense than to apply. It does rather attract the dregs of society to participate in it. No one with more than 1 brain cell would apply to go in —or watch it—.

TheQueef · 15/09/2018 19:45

Bloke from Tipperary in this time. That's pretty Irish.

WhatIsThisTomfoolery · 15/09/2018 19:47

You can't force people on it!!! I imagine disabled people have enough to contend with and maybe don't fancy it??

Is that alright with you op??

1981fishgut · 15/09/2018 19:47

TheQueef

However it’s a U.K. show what about Northern Ireland hardly ever have anyone from their
Jersey
Gbrtila not spelt correctly I know
All those other islands

OP posts:
WhatIsThisTomfoolery · 15/09/2018 19:48

Hey maybe they don't apply???

WhatIsThisTomfoolery · 15/09/2018 19:50

Do you expect producers to sift through applications looking for a disabled man, a disabled woman, a Chinese man and a woman from NI..... then look at all other applications to fill other spots?

You are being ridiculous and clutching at straws looking to be offended!

1981fishgut · 15/09/2018 19:50

WhatIsThisTomfoolery

Hey maybe they don't apply???

I wonder if these shows have a duty to represent and I know how difficult it is for disabled people to get in telly to then constantly have a group that make up sick a small percentage constantly on the screen must be annoying

OP posts:
Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 15/09/2018 19:51

As you're black and would like more black people on it, why don't you apply.

And what exactly is your problem with trans people?

GlitterNails · 15/09/2018 19:52

It’s likely they can’t/don’t want to accommodate many people with disabilities. I would love to see a wheelchair user or someone with a walking stick on.

YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 19:52

The Scottish woman has been removed already I see. It’s what happens when you scrape the bottom of the proverbial barrel, inevitably you get some scum.

ilovesooty · 15/09/2018 19:54

No point in anyone else applying is there?
I thought that it was being discontinued.
Not before time imo.

MyNewBearTotoro · 15/09/2018 19:54

Essentially, yes.

Big Brother is an entertainment show so I think they do pick the contestants they think will pull in the ratings. People who are argumentative, narcissistic, people who have a secret that might be found out, people who are very attractive, people who are outspoken, liars, the attention seeking, people who might cause controversy. When Nadia was in Big Brother she didn’t tell the other contestants she was trans at the start and there were lots of scenes focusing on the other contestants discussing whether they thought she might be trans andit pulled in the ratings.

Big Brother is basically the modern equivalent of a freak show where they put a load of people into a cage and highlight their worst or most intimate secrets and behaviour for the public’s entertainment. I imagine a lot of people have more taste than to apply because, rightfully, they don’t want their differences to be exploited in that way.

PositiveVibez · 15/09/2018 19:55

They had an asian married couple on the other year and an Asian guy called Chelsea iirc.

There was a Chinese woman called kat or cat on one series.

spongebunnyfatpants · 15/09/2018 19:56

Maybe they're all to intelligent and self respecting to apply to go on such a scrapping the bottom of the barrel tv show.
The show isn't on tv to be inclusive it's there to attractive viewers with talentless wannabes and puppets.

SemperIdem · 15/09/2018 19:57

I think Chinese people, and other East Asian nationalities are wildly under represented in tv, films and the media in general.

I’ve read more than one article that refers to the “silent minority” which is referring to the lack of representation of East Asians. So I think you’re on the money to question that.

Regarding disabled people - I think the reasons why a disabled person might not wish to go on a reality tv show, particularly one like BB are fairly obvious and understandable. I believe representation on tv in general is improving though.

As to why trans people are featured without fail - it is very much a trendy “buzzword” issue at the moment.

AmateurSwami · 15/09/2018 19:59

These shows never represent all groups fairly which is why I don’t watch! If they do have a POC it’s a “token”
