Can someone please tell me why shows like big brother and other shows pretty my always have a trans person on them
They represent 0.1 of the population

But you rarely see any disabled or even Chinese people who make up a larger percent of the population

The have two mixed raced people
And one trans in the big brother house

Their are no black
Disabled or Asian
No one from Northern Ireland
No one from any of the islands jersey ect

OP posts:
YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 20:00

Also they tend to parade anyone with a disability as a novelty too, which is shite.

MissMarplesBloomers · 15/09/2018 20:00

If you're looking for a bun fight, do one, OP.

Shows like that are entertainment shows, they look at personalities that will provide the best entertainment, I don't think they have quotas!!

But tell you what, write a letter to all the heads of entertainment, they're the ones to moan at!

BettyCrook · 15/09/2018 20:02

dont you remember cookie love?

StoorieHoose · 15/09/2018 20:04

I can remember 5 Scots on previous BBs - Lynne, Federico, Sandy, Cameron and Jason

Cameron only won cos it was a poor series and the rest were awful. Not representative of Scotland but I don’t think B.B. should be representive or statistically correct - is a game show!

“It’s only a game show, it’s only a game show!” What’s series was that it?

CaligulaBlushed · 15/09/2018 20:06

So if they didn't have trans people they would have no diversity whatsoever?? Yeah that'd be WAY better.... um, not.

AnnaMagnani · 15/09/2018 20:08

Although I haven't watched Big Brother in donkey's, I did look at the line up and think something similar. Yes they are picking people for entertainment value but am sure they do think they have ticked the 'diversity' box with a gay or a trans applicant and 50:50 male female.

But what about massive under-representation of disabled people, East Asians etc which happens routines on TV all the time.

HairyAntoinette · 15/09/2018 20:08

Cameron is from Orkney so ticks your island boxes.

The Chinese girl was Manchester or Liverpool - called Lisa? Liked her and she went far too early.

There was akmar (?) Series 5.

Nadia (transexuals as opposed to transgender).

Pete with tourettes (disability)... Plus a myriad of "learning disabilities" although it would be cruel to publicly speculate whom!

MicroManaged · 15/09/2018 20:08

“It’s only a game show, it’s only a game show!”

Big Break?

ButchyRestingFace · 15/09/2018 20:10

I wonder if these shows have a duty to represent and I know how difficult it is for disabled people to get in telly to then constantly have a group that make up sick a small percentage constantly on the screen must be annoying

And if they have a modicum of sense and don't want to apply, what do you suggest then? A government draft?

You have no idea how many disabled participants there have been. Not everyone has a visible disability or feels the need to announce any invisible disability they may have.

I'd have been thrilled if none of my fellow Scots had ever darkened the BB door but alas... Sad

NotACleverName · 15/09/2018 20:11

Oh good, another trans thread.

YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 20:11

It’s not shameful to have a disability Confused

It is however, to label people who act like twats disabled, so actually I agree with that point!

SneakyGremlins · 15/09/2018 20:13

I thought Tomazs is genderfluid not trans, unless there's another contestant you're on about?

TacoLover · 15/09/2018 20:13

Why don't you have a problem with the vast majority of the contestants that are white? Surely those are the ones stopping minority ethnic people from being represented? No, just trans people? OkHmm

HairyAntoinette · 15/09/2018 20:14

Black contestants I remember (only saw 3/4 series): Alison , Jon tickle (?) , Science, had goody (mixed race), Victor, jade goody (mixed race), Charley and I didn't catch all of last night - but two black men (?).

BlinkingHeckWA · 15/09/2018 20:14

They are just looking for personalities / backgrounds that are good for a story.

Hidillyho · 15/09/2018 20:15

As a disabled person, my worst nightmare would be to be on a show like big brother

HairyAntoinette · 15/09/2018 20:16

Yetalkshitehen - I've an invisible disability myself - and yes I feel shame - while other topic there! Wasn't suggesting others ought feel shame.

Hidillyho · 15/09/2018 20:23

You and me both!

YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 20:25

I do too! I misunderstood your post, sorry Hairy, too many disablist arses on here today I was on the defensive.

Sorry to you too Hidilly

WhatIsThisTomfoolery · 15/09/2018 20:41

Well this was a goady thread which didn't quite work for the OP!

londonrach · 15/09/2018 20:44

Why would you want to be on this...

TeaAddict235 · 15/09/2018 20:52

Totally agree with everything that @SemperIdem has said. Think that Semper has put it very eloquently too.

Orientals are silent minority in Europe itself. And that is to mean East Asian Europeans (their heritage was from East Asia but they may be 3rd, 4th or even 2nd generation). They are severely underrepresented in media, although the onset of Social media like You Tube may be changing this.

Disabled members of society may be discouraged by carers or family not to participate as physical disabilities often are the propensities for mental health issues. Therefore their mental state of wellbeing maybe at risk due to their vulnerabilities. Good program directors may have a responsibility to such participants.

Again Trans is the current buzz word. So you need a sensationalist member.

IIRC there are always dual heritage participants. Marketers state that dual heritage members, especially women, in a photo or cast make it more appealing and appear cosmopolitan. But that's another topic about the commodification of dual heritage women

I didn't watch Love Island OP but I heard that the black cast member was treated poorly in the way the program was edited. And there have been a few radio 4 documentaries about how black women are treated in the media (think Serena Williams most recently of late) and the conclusions have more or less been that these women do not fair well. And society makes no bones about it.

Sparklesocks · 15/09/2018 20:55

There definitely is a diversity issue on tv, but I don’t think it’s fair to blame trans people for applying.

NoBirthdayHugs · 15/09/2018 21:06

I think it depends on the show as well. Gay and trans people are certainly over-represented in reality shows like Big Brother.

On reality shows such as Child Genuis Asian families are probably over-represented. This year on Bake Off three contestants have Indian heritage but not one contestant is black.

TacoLover · 15/09/2018 21:16

It's interesting how the one/two/three people of a minority on tv shows are said to be 'over-represented' yet the white/straight people who make up 90%+ of every tv show are never mentioned... Hmm
