To get rid of duvets...

And go to sheets and blankets? Does anyone still use these? Are they warm enough (north England) central heating but old house?

Why though? I hate sleeping with sheets and blankets as I like to be wrapped up in the duvet.

YABVU. Blankets are heavy, they're restricting because you have to tuck them in. If you don't tuck them in, they fall off the bed in the middle of the night. Sometimes they need washing, which is a pain.

Why in the name of all that is holy would you want to do this??

If you have a decent quilt (mine is wonderful goose down, a bargain from TK Maxx), it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Blankets are horrible, you can never get enough of them to get you warm, and they are really heavy on you if it's cold.

I hate sheets and blankets if you need to stay warm, they just don't have that cozy "wrap around" feeling. I'm in Australia so it is often hot enough that only a sheet is necessary but in the North of England no way.

Just why? Duvets are light and cosy. Blankets heavy and cold.

YABU - sheets and blankets are awful, they get all tangled and you keep having to tuck/untuck them

If you really want the sheet/blanket experience you could do what we have somehow found ourselves doing: fat sheet: duvet: throw

We have flat sheet and light duvet in summer, add blanket/throw in Autumn and the heavy quilt in winter. Don't ask how that came about, it is probably because we like a cold bedroom.

But I don't think I could ever go back to sheets and blankets, I remember the bliss of my first duvet too well!

I find blankets heavy but they don't keep me warm. Plus they slide all over the frickin place, end up on the floor in the morning.

I find them austere and unwelcoming.

I find blankets so uncomfortable. Heavy and get mixed up, sheet slides down etc.
Then they need properly making in the morning to be nice to sleep in again. I grew up with them and hate them

I also like to stick my feet out when I am hot, can't do that with sheets.

I am wondering what your reason is? What is it about duvets you don't like?

I had sheets and blanket on the spare bed in the summer for various reasons.
It was a pain in the arse.

My 90 year old mum has never made the move to duvets. She uses flat sheets, blankets and bedspreads. I don't think they ever get washed, and the blankets are still the original ones we had as children..... I am 52....

I was raised with blankets And sheets. Didn't get a duvet until I bought my own.
Duvets ever since, much nicer.

We love our sheets and blankets. Would never go back to duvets! It’s not all candlewick and threadbare horse blankets, you can find beautiful Sherpa warm blankets that don’t weigh tonnes. If you’re getting a sheet, choose one a size bigger than your bed.

i agree, OP. I have been considering the same. It is impossible to adjust the warmth of your covering if you are too hot/cold during the night with a duvet, whereas with blankets you can easily throw one off or put it on again. Of course you can use different tog duvets for different seasons, but this does not solve the prob of needing to adjust hour to hour.

Plus, I find them very difficult to get into the covers satisfactorily, without redundant cover at the top - annoying.

We have slept in duvets for decades, but I now think they are the Devil's work, and am planning to return to blankets.

Cellular blankets are not as heavy as the old fashioned ones. I don't like the feeling of a winter tog duvet, too much bulk. I have 2 summer weight ones, put one on the bed and add some fleece throws if it is colder, if I get really cold I pull the other duvet up from the end of the bed, but am always too hot with the equivalent of 8 or 8 togs. The lightweight cellular blankets are warm without being bulky.

Have also found that a sheet, a blanket, and a throw work for me (especially with a cat on top of me) but in a cold house I would add a bit more. Layering works well.

It would be the cost too. Buying decent blankets for several beds would be expensive. Have you seen the price of woolen blankets these days? Then you will have extra sheets to get as well.
Bed making takes longer, and then all those blasted blankets will need washing from time to time. You would need several blankets per bed, and possibly even an eiderdown, and I haven't seen one of those for years.
My cold weather combo is thick duvet, fleece throw and an electric blanket underneath me. That is really lovely and warm!

I have a blanket on top of my duvet and it stays rolled down at the bottom of the bed for a reason. It's really heavy and when I try to turn over in bed it's such an ordeal.

I love duvets and would never ever chose sheets and blanket over a duvet.

Saying that I love blankets and we have loads in the lounge, for when watching tv.

We have 3 weights for: Summer, Autumn/Spring, Winter. Always get the right coverage that way, get them laundered each season at Morrisons.
Bought up on sheets, blankets and candlewick bedspread, used to get caught up all the time and trip getting out of bed in a hurry as so 'locked in'

I was feeling nostalgic about blankets about a year ago.
I remembered the pink / blue ones we had growing up with the stripe and the stitching on it. (I even remembered the tag)

Then I looked them up and they are unbelievably expensive, about €150 each!! (and I would need loads).

So that was that idea shelved.

I do have a lovely blanket my mil bought as a gift for my daughter and I really like that and put it on top of the duvet. (But that was also very expensive)

My son has sensory issues so I was looking at them for weight reasons also. I love blankets!

Maybe someone on here knows where to get cheaper ones?

You're not using the right duvet then! If you have some polyester duvet, yes I agree. But if you were to buy a goose down duvet, that is not the case. Pure luxury and warm in the winter, but beautifully cool in the summer. None of this 'summer duvet' and 'winter duvet'. Not cheap admittedly, but worth every penny. You don't get that snuggling down feeling with blankets.

I have a duvet but I like the weight of a blanket so I have a blanket over the top of the duvet. I find I don’t sleep well without the extra weight of the blanket.

I grew up without duvets- a cold house with no central heating in Scotland. Bedroom temperatures would often get to zero overnight.

Bedding was complicated.

Cotton sheets, then a couple of thin cotton blankets, then a couple of thick scratchy woolen blankets, then an eiderdown quilt- not a light duvet but a thickly padded heavily sewn heavy compressed beast,
more like a piece of upholstery and would thud if it hit the floor.

Trying even to turn over in bed was difficult- everything weighed a ton, everything had to be tucked in because they would slip off in all directions otherwise.

Making the bed was a lengthy and complicated procedure.

I am happy with my modern duvet.

Years ago we had sheets top and bottom (brother used to Apple pie me regularly!), Two blankets;one pink with a satin top and one yellow, then an eiderdown which was either green or rusty colour. The switch to divers meant the bed was made quicker and a lighter weight. We used to home that it was just a posh name for a big eiderdown!

Do what you want, most hospitals still use sheets and blankets. Most hotels have a blanket stashed in the wardrobe.

Divers? Duvets!
