To get rid of duvets...

And go to sheets and blankets? Does anyone still use these? Are they warm enough (north England) central heating but old house?

My arthritic feet are screaming 'aargh!!' just thinking of the weight. Shock

Duvets snuggle around you but blankets don't. One single (or double!) for each of you would solve any conflicts.

SilverySurfer · 18/09/2018 10:05

I have arthritis and use cellular wool blankets which are far lighter than a duvet.

Figural · 18/09/2018 11:05

I've never slept with cellular blankets! I don't think I'd get on with sheet and blankets anyway because I like to stick my feet out for some air. Grin

SilverySurfer · 19/09/2018 14:19

I never tuck my top sheet and blankets in so plenty of opportunity for sticking feet out for air Smile

starcrossedseahorse · 20/09/2018 21:01

Lovely light wool blankets are blissful.

starcrossedseahorse · 20/09/2018 21:02

BoreOfWhabylon so glad that you too have mentioned the cruelty in the production of feather duvets. I wish more people knew/cared. It is horrendous.

QuestionableMouse · 20/09/2018 21:09

I'm doing a duvet and a flat sheet. Mostly because my duvet cover has gone all bobbly and I can't find one I like to replace it.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/09/2018 21:24

I like sleeping with sheets and blankets but am too lazy to make the beds properly so sticking with duvets. Mind you I don't buy feather/ down duvets and pillows( love them on holiday).

Johndoe10 · 20/09/2018 21:30

My DH would die with this but I quite like blankets ! Reminds me of staying at my nans Grin

Johndoe10 · 20/09/2018 21:32

Synthetic duvets are sweaty and I won't have feather/down because of the live plucking

Oh no! That’s awful !

VeganCow · 20/09/2018 21:42

I will also mention the way feather quilts are produced. Those of you with feather pillows and duvets, are you aware of this?

mirandaspanda · 20/09/2018 21:44

I have a wool filled duvet. (OK I have 2 - Summer and Winter). I also have 2 eiderdowns as I like the weight!
I can't cope with my feet being trapped by a tucked in sheet - so the first thing I do when getting into a "sheets and blankets" bed is untuck the bottom.
I do love the look of crisp hospital corners and a properly made bed. I was brought up on this but simply can't manage it now and it takes me ages.

QuestionableMouse · 20/09/2018 21:45

IKEA do a nice imitation down range.

MammaSchwifty · 20/09/2018 21:53

Oh god, sheets and blankets. We had these growing up, memories of limbs tangled in sheets and that skin-on-scratchy-banket sensation. Toes caught in the cellular holes. Tucked in too tight, feet struggling to get free. Crumpled piles on the floor. Shivering cold, or sweating hot. That sheepy smell that only old real wool blankets have. Satin trim. Half a dozen layers to wrangle.

not for me, but YANBU, get any bedding you prefer!

beeefcake · 20/09/2018 21:58

We use sheets and blankets in the summer and duvets in the winter

theendofeverything · 20/09/2018 22:13

@starcrossedseahorse @BoreOfWhabylon - I only recently discovered the barbaric cruelty involved in down. I will never ever buy anything with down in it again. I think it should be made clear on labelling where down is obtained through plucking live birds.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/09/2018 22:26

Yes, it's dreadful. I won't post any links but the geese have their breast feathers and down ripped out by hand, tearing the flesh. The tears are then stitched with needle and thread. Roughly. At speed.

I won't have anything with down or feathers now I know this.

theendofeverything · 20/09/2018 22:30

I saw something on Facebook and the horror of it made me cry. I had no idea.

Fascinate · 20/09/2018 23:40

If you can crochet, you can make a single blanket for anything from £25 upwards, depending on the wool you use. Takes me about a week or two to make one, doing it in the evenings.

Whippedtoafrenzy · 20/09/2018 23:53

fascinate sound!

Canuckduck · 21/09/2018 02:26

We changed from duvet to sheets and blankets. A cotton one in the summer and a plushy one and a heavy cotton bedspread in winter. I love the weight of them and the fact you can adjust by adding or taking away in the winter!

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 21/09/2018 02:36

It is really worth investing in a silk filled duvet. Have had one on my bed for 10 years, still going strong, had it professionally laundered once. Have just rellaced my kids’ duvets with silk filled too. Heavenly.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/09/2018 09:57

I agree Gandalfs

Soak and Sleep have them on sale at the moment

www.soakandsleep.com/luxury-pure-silk-duvet.html

(no, I don't work for them but always recommend for quality, price and service)

paxillin · 21/09/2018 10:06

I get the nostalgia, they look lovely. But when I have enough blankets to be warm I feel as if sleeping under a carpet.
