And go to sheets and blankets? Does anyone still use these? Are they warm enough (north England) central heating but old house?

I love the weight of a blanket, but they are an absolute bugger to wash and dry.

picklemepopcorn · 15/09/2018 22:17

Eiderdown isn't cruel, by the way.

ToadOfSadness · 15/09/2018 22:25

I won't buy feather bedding because of the live plucking of the creatures that provide the feathers.

I actually find that synthetic filling is OK as long as the covers are not that horrible micro fibre type stuff, like J cloths. When I buy a new duvet it has to be at least partly cotton covered, usually poly cotton but never the other stuff, that is disgustingly hot and clammy, was sent one by mistake once so tried it but it was really nasty.

UterusUterusGhali · 15/09/2018 22:27

I agree with TheObwaldhutte.

4 tog light washable duvet. Add a sheet and throw in the winter. No storing bulky duvets in the summer. It's fab.

I love being well tucked in though.

biscuiteater · 15/09/2018 22:38

I did exactly this a couple of years ago, had a feather duvet which was lovely in cold depths of winter but really struggled to get the right temperature any other time and it was a pain changing the covers on it. So now got sheet, faux fur blankets and lovely thick quilt comforter on top. So easy to make the bed and adjust layers to get just right amount of warmth. I have never looked back and I can wash the covers in the machine too. Duvet wouldn't fit.

havingabadhairday · 15/09/2018 22:45

I remember blankets when I was a child and I remember the excitement when we got duvets.

I'm not going back!

MorningsEleven · 15/09/2018 22:56

I remember having blankets then we changed to "continental quilts". I think going back could me a good thing because I like to be incinerated in my sleep and DH can't cope with the heat so we could each have the number of layers that are comfortable underneath a right nice counterpane.

aphextwin · 15/09/2018 23:10

I went back to sheets and blankets a few years ago. I overheat in bed and a duvet makes it difficult for me to control the temperature of my body. I also like to have my feet tucked in and something heavy over my bottom half and a duvet is too light.

Roussette · 16/09/2018 07:36

Going back to blankets would traumatise me and that feeling of a ton of blankets in a freezing cold room. Plus I like to stick out a leg, a foot etc... and the whole lot would be in the floor the way I wriggle around!

Lonecatwithkitten · 16/09/2018 08:28

I feel the cold terribly so used to use down duvets with blankets as well.
Then I found wool duvets my life has been changed a million times better than down for me.

Sandstormbrewing · 16/09/2018 08:39

YANBU. I love the weight of blankets, find it cosier than a duvet. It's definitely warm enough. My only issue will be find blankets big enough for our new bed.

PeridotCricket · 16/09/2018 08:42

Wool duvets, fab for the menopause.

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/09/2018 08:43

If you’re willing to shell out for a really decent duvet then over heating shouldn’t be a problem. Ours is goose down and cost around £350 but is amazing.

Roussette · 16/09/2018 09:11

Ditto Purple. TK Maxx sometimes have great bargains on goose down quilts, ours was nearly £500 reduced to about £180, worth every penny

Branleuse · 16/09/2018 10:22

i love a weighted blanket, but id be more likely to have a few blankets on top of a duvet. Duvets are fantastically warm and light, but i do like the heaviness of a blanket. Its comforting

Shosha1 · 16/09/2018 10:33

We have a duvet with a bedspread over it, and a throw folded over the bottom. I get to hot DH gets to cold, we have seperate bedcnext yo each other. I can just have the duvet and bedspread DH has the lot 😁

Allegorical · 16/09/2018 19:33

I use a sheet under a duvet. If I get hot just push the duvet back and stay under a the sheet. Means i only have to change the duvet every other wash. Hate putting duvet covers on.

llangennith · 16/09/2018 19:49

I'm old enough to remember the time before 'continental quilts' too. Ice cold cotton sheets and heavy blankets. Horrible! My DM had a thing about hospital corners so you could hardly get into the bed. Every night I had to get out of bed to untuck everything once DM had gone back downstairs.
Duvets liberated me😄

SilverySurfer · 16/09/2018 20:15

I hate duvets and have always used sheets and woollen blankets. It's much more flexible and you can take off/put on according to the temperature. Pure wool is best.

cochineal7 · 16/09/2018 20:37

A wool duvet does it for me. Best of both worlds.

Areyoufree · 16/09/2018 20:42

I went back to sheets and blankets, and I love it. Much easier to clean blankets than a duvet, plus I love having them tucked in really tightly.

capercaillie · 16/09/2018 20:42

We use sheet and blanket - much prefer as more breathable.

WellThisIsShit · 16/09/2018 20:45

You haven’t said why?!

But... ‘counterpane’, ‘eiderdown’, ‘bedspread’, ‘candlewick quilt and sham’... such evocative and beautiful old words. We need to bring some of these back just to embed them in our children’s memories :)

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/09/2018 20:53

I grew up with sheets and blankets and wouldn't go back.

Synthetic duvets are sweaty and I won't have feather/down because of the live plucking.

I have a silk-filled duvet from Soak & Sleep. It's the medium weight one and is cool in the summer and warm in the winter (my bedroom is unheated too).

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 17/09/2018 21:41

I'd kick DH out of the bed before I get rid of my feather duvet! Wink

Definitely nothing worse than blankets and sheets imho, I can't bear being tangled in really thin sheets then a heavy blanket chucked on top.
