To be scared of late night door knocker?

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:06

Just climbed into bed 5 minutes ago, and as soon as I did, I head knocking on my front door. Not an urgent knock, more like a repetitive tentative knock... could have sworn I heard them try the handle too. I'm really freaked out! As my username suggests, I'm probably being dramatic but no chance in hell am I going to see who it was. Any words of wisdom to help me relax? Nobody I know would knock for me at this time of night. The fact I have a crazy ex makes my mind jump to conclusions too.. Need to be up early for work Confused

Sounds like a branch or something tapping the roof?

Go look through the window, sure it's nothing

BMW6 · 22/08/2018 23:10

How crazy is your ex? Is he likely to be the knocker?

victoriaspongecake · 22/08/2018 23:11

Just go and look! or you won't sleep tonight.

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:12

Definitely a knock at the front door! And no branches near my house. My house is weird position that you can't see the front door from and windows. Lying hear expecting another knock. Also just noticed there's a spider on my ceiling. Ffs SadGin

Ex probably crazy enough to want to frighten me, but don't think he'd break in or anything like that

CarrieBlu · 22/08/2018 23:14

I would have to go and look!

Reaa · 22/08/2018 23:14

Can you look from an upstairs window and you tube a scary dog barking recording to play loudly or that maybe a really stupid idea

Have phone in hand ready to dial 999 if you think it's anyone turning up to cause you harm.

gingergenius · 22/08/2018 23:15

I have a scary ex too so I'd be freaked out. Nothing much to offer other than a handhold!

Maelstrop · 22/08/2018 23:15

Would you be seen if you crept down? Is there a spy hole?

Voldesnort · 22/08/2018 23:16

Someone did this to me the other night! Freaked me out totally. Luckily I had Ddog with me for a bit of confidence. It was a woman looking for directions, allegedly. Still scared the bejeezus out of me! Switch on all the lights OP and look out of the window.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 22/08/2018 23:17

Don’t open your door. Make sure all windows and doors are locked securely. If it’s someone you know, they’d have called your phone.

Kill the spider. My house is crawling with them, I show no mercy ☠️

Viewoffriday · 22/08/2018 23:17

This happened to me. He went away and came back. I fucking freaked out. He knocked and knocked for ages both times. I called dh back from the pub and it was someone from upstairs, that I'd never met before, wanting help to open his window at 10.30.

Whhaatt a wanker.

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:18

I've calmed a bit, thank you all!! If there's another knock I'll try go ask who it is through the letterbox, phone in hand! Spider heading to the opposite corner of the room also, might get some sleep yet!

I tell you that story because fucking useless but harmless idiots knock on doors at all hours, just to be fucking annoying.

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:19

No spyhole and a glass on the door so I'd be seen! Still quiet so far, heart rate starting to come down! Grin

You poor thing Sad. I hate hearing noises and a knock at the door again this time would more than freak me out. My only solution is to sit with the lights on (hopefully with curtains closed so no-one can see you're awake) and watch TV or something on YouTube. I find that TV normally relaxes me somewhat. Or could you call your mother or a close friend to speak to? I know it's late but I'm sure if you explained the situation they wouldn't mind. X

Bobbybear10 · 22/08/2018 23:20

Don’t turn any lights on and see if you can creep downstairs to a room where you can see the door? Stay hidden just in case, otherwise do you have a friend or family member really close you could call to just pop over?

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:21

I've never had it in this house before as it's set back a bit from other houses around me, the sort of house you'd have to be purposefully heading to to knock on IYSWIM. I've never even had a trick or treater knock!

ScreamingValenta · 22/08/2018 23:22

I find unexpected callers worrying at any time of day, let alone at night - I would be scared too. I'm sure it's nothing; possibly an unrelated noise or someone who's got the wrong house (easy to say when not my door, I know Sad ). I do hope you manage to feel calmer and get some sleep.

ShadyLady53 · 22/08/2018 23:23

Were you in the dark or were your lights on?

I only ask because if you were in bed and all your lights were off/not visible to the outside and heard a tentative knock and someone trying the door I would seriously consider that someone might be doing this to test if you are asleep before breaking in.

If I were me, and I have done this, I would immediately put all my lights on. That’s usually enough to scare someone off. In fact it did once, by the time I’d got to the hall landing lights they’d broken a downstairs window and as soon as they saw the light on they ran off.

Can you easily see out of a window overlooking your front door? Just be as vigilant as possible.

It could also easily be a someone drunk returning from the pub and forgetting what house they live in!

Vicky1990 · 22/08/2018 23:23

Phone the police and tell them you can hear somebody outside.
Do not open the door.

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:24

My strongman-wannabe friend lives a few doors down, will have his number ready to call if needed! Still all quiet, so hopefully all's well that ends well. Thank you for your advice in my time of wussiness!!

This happened to me years ago. It turned out it was a foreign couple who thought we were the b&b they had booked. I answered the door in my pj's and had to direct them across the street!

Maelstrop · 22/08/2018 23:25

Phone the police and tell them you can hear somebody outside. Do not open the door.

Christ, please don’t! That’s ridiculous.

essieestherson · 22/08/2018 23:26

I had this the other day at a similar time.. turned out it was Chinese takeaway that had come to the wrong address...!
