To be scared of late night door knocker?

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:06

Just climbed into bed 5 minutes ago, and as soon as I did, I head knocking on my front door. Not an urgent knock, more like a repetitive tentative knock... could have sworn I heard them try the handle too. I'm really freaked out! As my username suggests, I'm probably being dramatic but no chance in hell am I going to see who it was. Any words of wisdom to help me relax? Nobody I know would knock for me at this time of night. The fact I have a crazy ex makes my mind jump to conclusions too.. Need to be up early for work Confused

It probably is a coincidence but better safe than sorry. Call the police and say you are concerned that it sounds like someone could be in your home. You can also text them.

Teaandcrisps · 22/08/2018 23:51

I heard that the best form of defence is surprise - so steel yourself to run like the wind to the front door.

Banana770 · 22/08/2018 23:51

Definitely call a neighbour, you won’t sleep until you’ve searched the house properly. Any old electronic kids toys kicking around or something?

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:51

Right I've had a word with myself and gearing up to check round the house, I'm thinking smoke alarm and my memory must be wrong about the bleeps... then maybe just maybe, sleep? I know I'm being silly, house is secure and I'd hear someone enter so I'm pretty sure I'm hear alone (least, the rational part of my brain does!)

I'd msg your friend and ask him to come over (if you know him well enough and are comfortable with that), then get downstairs, let him in and have him check everywhere with you. Once you're satisfied all is ok see your friend out and leave couple of lights on! It's gonna be stupid coincidence am sure OP. Deep breaths! Smile

I had a late night door knock a few months ago, fairly quiet, not a loud hammering or anything, im slow to get to the door due to a disability, while coming down the hall the door handle was tested. It was the police, there had been a couple of break ins a few doors down, they knocked to ask if we had been in/seen anything, bit knocked quietly so they didn't alarm us/wake us as it wasn't urgent although our light was still on. Tested the handle to make sure the house was secure and hadn't been targeted as well. Very lovely, couldn't help them at all, went back to bed. don't know about the beeping though sorry.

ShadyLady53 · 22/08/2018 23:53

Act like you are going for a wee. Clonk around loud and proud. Keep your phone in your hand.

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:53

Neighbour friend went right to voicemail... i KNOW I'm being silly so... here goes!!!

Don't lie there. Get out if bed, clatter about and turn lights on.

ShadyLady53 · 22/08/2018 23:55

You’ve got this! We are all her supporting you!

ImAIdoot · 22/08/2018 23:56

Ok this will not confort you but just to bring home that this can be serious - I had this, I called the police to say I could hear someone outside (which is ridiculous) they saw me in the house and started kicking the door off while I was on the phone. The police got to me in the nick of time, stopping a home invasion by several armed youths. I got to watch the scary looking fuckers bundled into police cars and a van instead of experiencing whatever nightmare they had planned for me.

Trust your instincts. Really.

DisappearingGirl · 22/08/2018 23:56

I think the advice is to turn lights on and make plenty of noise as you go. If there was anyone around (unlikely), they're likely to make an exit if they hear you.

youarenot · 22/08/2018 23:56

Even my 1 year old is here supporting you! (hes suffering atm due to vaccines today)

BettyBaggins · 22/08/2018 23:56

Text neighbour

papayasareyum · 22/08/2018 23:56

RosiePosies · 22/08/2018 23:59

Stroller15 · 22/08/2018 23:59

Here for you OP!

ThinkingCat · 22/08/2018 23:59

just in case: text someone you know in real life, make sure they are awake an reply, and ask them to send police if you don't reply in 5 mins / 10 mins.

ShadyLady53 · 23/08/2018 00:00

You could also call your landline from your mobile, then put some lights on and make some noise like you are heading downstairs. That would scare anyone in there that shouldn’t be!

Could the beeps be a carbon monoxide alarm?

Bobbybear10 · 23/08/2018 00:01

Could admin message you and get your location op just in case?

ShadyLady53 · 23/08/2018 00:01

Look on FB messenger if you are on there or WhatsApp and message someone who is up that is local or could get help to you.
