To be scared of late night door knocker?

ProbablyDramatic · 22/08/2018 23:06

Just climbed into bed 5 minutes ago, and as soon as I did, I head knocking on my front door. Not an urgent knock, more like a repetitive tentative knock... could have sworn I heard them try the handle too. I'm really freaked out! As my username suggests, I'm probably being dramatic but no chance in hell am I going to see who it was. Any words of wisdom to help me relax? Nobody I know would knock for me at this time of night. The fact I have a crazy ex makes my mind jump to conclusions too.. Need to be up early for work Confused

I would have called 999...

@ImAIdoot

True. One of my aunties once heard her "husband" traipse around the house/get ready for the day.

Some time later she heard him get up again and went to check. It luckily was actually her husband this time but someone had actually stuck their wood axe infront of their door (clearly made a big fuss about presentation / scariness...)

The police said my aunt was lucky she assumed the intruders to be her DH and didn't get up. (There had apparently been a nasty string of similar incidents.)

That's when they got the security system.

So yes, police imo.

Just a suggestion which might be worthwhile OP if you can’t see your front door from the window. Have you considered one of them video doorbells that detects motion and sends image to your phone/a screen and you can talk through?

When I leave my flatshare and I’m alone I will be getting myself one!

Hope you’re ok.

ProbablyDramatic · 23/08/2018 00:02

Ok, house all clear Grin have settled that it was a takeaway delivery (hungry now) and I'd remembered the smoke alarm beep wrongly. Forgot to watch where the twatting spider went mind, but I think I can live with that Grin thank you all for supporting me through my night of being spooked!

Phew! Well done OP, you were very brave.

Might be a good idea though to use this to prompt a security view, especially seeing as you can’t see your front door. OurMiracles idea is great. Locks on bedroom doors, cameras that link up to your phone, security lights, fake barking dog sound near front door etc are all good ideas.

Now try and get a good nights sleep if you can!

TheSassyAssassin · 23/08/2018 00:06

Sleep well OP Flowers

ProbablyDramatic · 23/08/2018 00:07

Great idea with the video doorbell, shall definitely be investing! Along with a barbed wire 10ft high fence, armed guards, moat, etc Grin

YY to the added security measures. Well, minus the moat. That's just excessive Wink

Sparklesocks · 23/08/2018 00:16

Well done op, yes it was probably a takeaway delivery driver or cabbie who got the wrong house.
A few years ago we had a drunk bloke knocking on ours late at night, turned out he was meant to be going to a friend’s down the road and knocked on the wrong door! It happens!

ThinkingCat · 23/08/2018 00:17

Also a real barking dog.

Womaningreen · 23/08/2018 00:54

@ImAldoot

OMD! What a nightmare!

ProbablyDramatic · 23/08/2018 22:40

Thought I'd update you with what an idiot I am...

A few days before this, I'd used a hire care for a business trip. I do this quite a lot, so have a designated 'safe place' where I dump the keys for them to collect. I'd done this, but they hadn't collected the car for a few days after. Found out today I'd left my jacket in the car, so pretty damn sure it was the collection person knocking to give me my jacket back... and yep, the battery in my smoke alarm needed changing. What an eejit Grin

Oh PD you are a buck eejit indeed but that doesnt matter since it was all innocent in the end.
