What is this strange phemenom?

Where I work there are stair from reception to the upper floor. Nearly almost without exception men take these stairs two at a time - I have never once seen a woman doing this. It's not even just tall men, it's short men as well. What is this all about?

One at a time is slow but dignified, two at a time is faster but ungainly. Society judges women on appearance over fitness.

Besides, two at a time in heels is just asking for trouble.

Have you watched them coming down? Men tend to point their knees outwards, women inwards.

MyLifeInTheSunshine · 18/08/2018 10:03

If I’ve got the right shoes on I always take steps two at a time. I’m female. I’m tall, though, so find one step at a time too dainty and time consuming. I’m definitely a stair bounder!

UpstartCrow · 18/08/2018 10:03

It could be ergonomics. If the height of the stairs is too short, people (in flat shoes) will feel its a waste of energy to take them one at a time; it feels like too many little steps.

MyAuntyBadger · 18/08/2018 10:05

I generally take stairs two at a time unless I'm carrying a hot drink or something heavy. I am quite ungainly though and occasionally take a tumble.

sirfredfredgeorge · 18/08/2018 10:16

2 steps is more efficient overall, but requires higher peak demands, so a person will naturally optimise depending on those two criteria. So because testosterone filled men will in general have more strength available to them, it will be less of their peak demand required for the heavier lift of two stepping which means they can use less total effort over the entire flight.

If you tire out the legs first of the man so they can't do the extra force required easily, they'll also do single step, equally overweight men and strong legged women will be more likely to double step.

It's just the body naturally optimising for the least effort.

I put it down to men being silly show offs. In our house there's a return on the stairs just under the bit of landing before the staircase goes up to the top floor (It's a Georgian townhouse and mainly consists of stairs and spiders). The top bit of landing forms a tiny shelf, which gets covered in fingerprints because himself can't walk down the stairs without swinging off it like a monkey. He's 45, the big show off twat. It's not me -I have to clean the fucker - or the kids cos they're still to small to reach.

Assburgers · 18/08/2018 10:30

I always take them 2 at a time (female, long legs). It hadn’t occurred to me that it was ungainly.

Christ, another thing to worry about.

MyKingdomForBrie · 18/08/2018 10:33

the big show off twat - we'll hardly a show off if you haven't seen him do it, and frankly it sounds fun. I could not care that much about a few finger marks on the stairs..

I think those stairs in reception often feel like you're on show, maybe they're just trying to get off centre stage as quickly as possible?!

trickyboots · 18/08/2018 10:36

Ha I used to do that. Don't know why. Just stretching my legs. Maybe a height thing.

RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 10:44

That is a really good question! Why do some of them also put one hand on a railing or wall or whatever and do a sort of weird scissor jump over it?! It’s quite baffling!
😂

RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 10:46

I think it’s just an innate form of showing off. Lol

ToadOfSadness · 18/08/2018 10:48

I thought a phemenom was a kind of female condom...

Oh no, am thinking of a Femidom Grin

Lethaldrizzle · 18/08/2018 10:48

I do 2 at a time. It keeps you fit. I'm a woman

WhiteDust · 18/08/2018 10:52

They're in training of course... 💪

Teenagerwoes · 18/08/2018 10:52

I do this at work and home.

Thinking about it, it is commented on quite frequently at work, always someone’s happy in their work, or someone’s in a hurry type comments. So I could assume that they have assumed Hmm I am keen to get back to work.

123bananas · 18/08/2018 10:57

I take the stairs 2 at a time at work and I am short, its makes it faster.

JaniceBattersby · 18/08/2018 11:05

I’m always take all stairs two at a time and I always run up them. I’m not a fitness fanatic or anything, it’s just that I find stairs a chore and running gets it over quicker.

Ginkypig · 18/08/2018 11:12

I'm tall and until I became physically disabled and obviously couldn't then do it I took stairs two at a time.

It felt natural whereas one at a time felt slow and cumbersome.

Ginkypig · 18/08/2018 11:14

That said if I was going up stairs with someone rather than on my own I'd match their speed.

liverbird10 · 18/08/2018 11:57

I've done this plenty of times.

kittypop · 18/08/2018 13:33

Well I'm tell and I never take them 2 at a time and I've never seen any women do it - I do think it's a testosterone look at me kind of thing.

OP posts:
RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 14:15

I have never seen a female do this. Damn. I have’t lived.

RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 14:15

...haven’t

RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 14:17

Agreed, OP. It is a man thang. As are standing with your legs apart, hands in pockets and sitting on public transport with your legs spread. It is very much a check me thing.

RoseWhiteTips · 18/08/2018 14:17

No comment on women doing similar stuff. Men do like to display.
