To think that instagram has jumped the shark?

I used to really love instagram it as a place to get inspiration, eduction or a point in the right direction to go do some research myself on various topics, but am getting bored of it.

The influencer wars (with some clearly playing the game more than others Hmm ), the woke activists who are beginning to believe their own hype (their content becoming about them and how good they are), even the naice art and design accounts that I predominately follow are beginning to be a little lacking.

AIBU to think that insta is in a death spiral? If so (because clearly I have forgotten life before it) where do people find informative and / or creative inspiration outside of it these days. Blogs seem to have died, and facebook is a non starter!

NC because well I am bored!

Catfoodcakes now added too. I want that cherry bakewell right now!

@Amber - there was a thread where some pretty horrible stuff was said about an instagrammer (and I think more than one tbh). Apparently now my thread was created (apparently according to her - I don't know though but it appears they are saying this I dont know as I dont follow them and not about to) specifically abuse said instagrammer.

How anyone could make that jump is beyond me but obviously I am being naive - the thread was about me being bored and whether I was BU thinking that it was lacking (and asking for inspiration) Hmm

Now back to what I personally think is relevant....

@highheels that is a really great idea. I havent really used the hastag function but off to experiment.

@breadsticks thanks for the cake tip. My DC LOVES looking at cakes on insta but we always end up on tastybae

Am I using it wrong? I thought it was just a place for photo sharing - kind of like Flickr except you can only put pictures from a phone on it (so I don't use it as much as Flickr because my phone doesn't take as good pictures as my camera) and for following your friends' photos. I'm not friends with anybody who uses it to "educate," or with any famous people. I feel like I may have completely missed the point!

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 14/08/2018 17:46

Brendatheblender I agree about the GOMI thread . That was terrible and her stories were hard to watch when she found out about them.

I’ve found that GOMI is a horrible place. It was mentioned in the first ever mumsnet thread and I googled out of curiosity, that’s a website for meaness not discussion like mumsnet is.

Breadsticksandhummus · 14/08/2018 17:47

Each to their own, but personally I think that is way to late to have a child at a pub

Not really up to you though is it. In plenty of cultures that's normal. I'm from a Mediterranean background and when I have family visiting they are baffled ds is in bed at 7.30, its totally weird to them.

My mum is a musician so when I was a kid I was hanging out backstage at shows constantly - well into the night! It was great.

langkaw · 14/08/2018 17:47

Instagram was great when nobody talked or added captions about body positivity/mental health/parentingthshitoutoflife. It used to be a lovely, mysterious photo album and alas now it's like one big horrible, long winded, cliched Facebook update.

@foxtiger its really evolved from that function for some people. I used to use it for that type of stuff but its turned into a microblogging platform - and I have in the past found some really interesting accounts through it. I no longer use it myself to post photos tbh (I just upload into a google drive for family to share).

So are we not allowed to discuss people in the public eye any more? Can we discuss boris Johnson? Katie price? Where is the line in the sand?

@langkaw lovely, mysterious photo album YES! Didn't it.... I do lament for those days even though it was a tad voyeuristic ..

Why do you think every user on this thread is middle class? That's a massive assumption to make.

SavannahSky · 14/08/2018 17:51

lang as long as we don't break talk guidelines then of course we can!!

Some people just joining to try to derail the thread and get it deleted

Why?? To silence us?

langkaw · 14/08/2018 17:52

Oh bring back avocados and sunsets I say!!!

@Allthegoodusernamesaregonesad
She's not trying to be a role model for you or anyone else though.
She is just being honest about her health and you've said her medication, and has celebrated her birthday.
She isn't advocating drinking on medication. She's not doing anything at all, other than living her life and choosing to document some of it via her IG.
So what?

SavannahSky · 14/08/2018 17:52

Who is it we are supposed to be slagging off then? Cos,er,I just don't see that...

I have never uploaded a single thing to instagram. Not necessary. Mostly use it as inspiration/educational/Humour. I do leave comments sometimes and get comments back sometimes. Only famous people I follow are Minnie Driver, Princess Eugenie and one dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor who inspires me to give a shit about how I look when I go out in the morning. No reason to share anything other than what inspires you. Personal stuff is wholly unecessary. It's what I love about it.

ItsColdNow · 14/08/2018 17:53

@allthegoodusernamesaretakensad I saw those stories. But to be fair she had obviously accompanied her mum to Bristol for the show and they were staying in a travelodge. Going with her mum to meet some friends is not really that outrageous.
I don’t have anything to say about anyone’s parenting or choices, the swearing and calling people C’s was not my cup of tea and the 7 year old is featured a lot, but if people complain about MOFOD’s kids being heavily featured and Martha’s and anyone else’s then she is being discussed in exactly the same way.

Jillyjollyjandy · 14/08/2018 17:54

Instagram is something of a tinderbox these days.

BrynhildurWhitemane · 14/08/2018 17:54

Yungmummalooks The only vitriol on this thread is from people like yourself, who has clearly come over from IG and certainly doesn't appear to have read the thread.

Personally, I don't know who is being mentioned here, I've never bothered with IG. But from some comments made it is clear that while this person isn't being lambasted here, they are not showing the same respect by misreporting things on their IG account.

And as a working class mother, it was MN that gave me the strength and support to leave an abusive ex.

Allthegoodusernamesaregonesad · 14/08/2018 17:54

I follow kierra Irvine. She has a daughter who has heart problems. She is amazing mother and makes you want to do better with your life.
Also chrissy teigen is so funny.

cooda · 14/08/2018 17:54

If you’re going to slate others. Maybe don’t hide. Share your insta name. You clearly have one. How would you feel if this was aimed at you? Your friend? Your child? If you don’t like Instagram, don’t use it. If you don’t like who you follow, don’t follow them. It’s quite simple really.
