To think that instagram has jumped the shark?

I used to really love instagram it as a place to get inspiration, eduction or a point in the right direction to go do some research myself on various topics, but am getting bored of it.

The influencer wars (with some clearly playing the game more than others Hmm ), the woke activists who are beginning to believe their own hype (their content becoming about them and how good they are), even the naice art and design accounts that I predominately follow are beginning to be a little lacking.

AIBU to think that insta is in a death spiral? If so (because clearly I have forgotten life before it) where do people find informative and / or creative inspiration outside of it these days. Blogs seem to have died, and facebook is a non starter!

NC because well I am bored!

Um...so do I find enjoyment in being creative. Just wouldn’t have occurred to me to use Instagram for it.

Gemini69 · 14/08/2018 16:17

I've never used it .... what did I MISS Hmm

boredyboredy · 14/08/2018 16:18

@gemini69 at this stage probably nothing Grin

I still love it. I'm very picky about who I follow and my feed is predominantly beautiful art and landscapes. Any hint of drama or posing or being heavily sold to and I'm off in search of new accounts.

I do think these things fall out of favour but IG has a lot more life in it yet. But the algorithm does mean you can just see the same things repeatedly.

@gendercritter - any suggestions of art accounts so I can try to shake my feed up?

I don’t read anyth8ng much on instagram. I just look at my friends’ pretty pictures. Actual friends, who I know in real life. Sounds like this is for the best and is, in fact, the reason I like it!

What is depressing is the number of comments saying that the comments about mumsnet must be right depsite the fact the poster hasn't actually seen them. The lack of critical analysis and evidence based argument is so depressing - I work as a part-time university tutor and it's something much more experienced colleagues say has been declining generally during their careers and much more sharply in the last 5 years or so. Case in point on Instagram generally.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/08/2018 16:29

Although, TBF, how can you develop a culture of reasoned debate if you are going to be called a vile, jealous bully if you question any easily verifiable facts which are being misreported?

boredyboredy · 14/08/2018 16:32

@itscoldnow et al - I agree with your observations but don't think this thread really is the place to discuss a specific individuals behaviour especially when there is continued threat of legal action (no matter how spurious this is!). They are not the only influencer who is at 'war' with others - it happens outside the instamum sphere too - and it was that general vibe I was referring to in my OP.

I like insta I follow a range of people from friends to strangers, nice houses and people that holiday a lot. I get a lot of my ideas from there from balloons to days out with my children and what to make for tea tonight.
It's better than Facebook, Facebook bores me so much

Pinkvoid · 14/08/2018 16:34

It’s always been fairly pretentious tbh. It’s full of the arty hipster types. I always think there’s two types of people: Facebook lovers and Twitter/Instagram lovers. Some people also reject all which is fine. I’m definitely still an Instagram lover.

Shitonthebloodything · 14/08/2018 16:36

I use it for interior design day dreaming and friends and family. I don't see any conflict/influencers/drama because the whole point is that you pick and choose what to follow. I don't understand the problem really.

@shiton - any suggestions on the interior design front? As I said in the OP I am finding it just a bit lacking - and that I seem to find just aren't doing it for me anymore. They are all becoming a certain formula or trying to then move to be more commercial which is fine but then they start to lose their authenticity...

I wish there were more journal mums to follow on there. I like just mums my ages with children around DDs age but they all seem to be sent stuff now or be brand ambassadors.

Breadsticksandhummus · 14/08/2018 16:40

People live their whole lives out on Instagram. It's really odd.

ItsColdNow · 14/08/2018 16:40

@boredyboredy it is impossible to have a thread about Instagram without individual accounts being discussed and I was very careful not to name the account, but previous threads worked hard to stop the IG v mumsnet arguments and now suddenly this is all worse than anything I read previously, but from a really surprising source. And to be honest I didn’t think the title or OP particularly clear.

MaggieAndHopey · 14/08/2018 16:41

I don't really follow any 'influencers' (I don't understand the appeal of those accounts at all) or activists. My feed contains, inter alia: haircuts, old hollywood pictures, old punk pictures, women in the past, tattoos, natural history, powerlifters, Turkish pottery, hand lettering, woodcuts, polished fossils, and a pig called Esther that lives in a house. It takes up as much of my attention as it ever did, which is to say, too much.

boredyboredy · 14/08/2018 16:45

@itscoldnow - fair enough there will people wanting to go into specifics but I thought that my OP was pretty clear as to the fact its not about 'instamums' or instagram vs mumsnet - especially the last bit...

AIBU to think that insta is in a death spiral? If so (because clearly I have forgotten life before it) where do people find informative and / or creative inspiration outside of it these days. Blogs seem to have died, and facebook is a non starter!

but clearly I was a bit naive!

OP posts:
boredyboredy · 14/08/2018 16:47

@Maggieandhopey - oooh I am off to look for the pig called Esther Grin

OP posts:
HolyMountain · 14/08/2018 16:50

I follow Esther the Pig Grin, she's been ill recently and had a scan, bless her!

boredyboredy · 14/08/2018 16:52

Woah I was expecting a micro pig but she's a BIG PIG LIVING IN A HOUSE! This has made my day.
