How to mind an engagement ring

BWrose · 10/08/2018 08:44

The Mr popped the question recently. I don't generally wear jewellery in my day to day life but I want to wear this. It's a silver ring. How is an engagement ring minded? Do people take a ring off when washing hands? Etc

Some people do, lots don’t. I’m a jeweller and I never take mine off, except to clean it every now and again. What a lot of people don’t do, that they should, is get the setting check over by a jeweller every 3 to 5 years. Most times they will be fine (no charge), but sometime the claws/setting moves or wears away, particularly on 18ct gold and thinner settings, and the stones get loose and eventually fall out.

SoyDora · 10/08/2018 08:50

I leave mine on all the time except cleaning.

IVEgotthePOWER · 10/08/2018 08:52

I take mine off and forget about it for like a month Blush

GrumpyOldMare · 10/08/2018 08:53

Not sure what you mean by minding a ring.
I never used to take my rings off for washing my hands, only if I was doing messy jobs. But then again,I didn't have an engagement ring (my choice)

Timeisslippingaway · 10/08/2018 08:54

I never take it off, just give it a good clean with fairy liquid and a baby toothbrush every now and then.

FromNowOn · 10/08/2018 08:55

Well I have to take mine off for work but otherwise I wear it. Unless I’m baking or something. My wedding ring stays on.

Totho · 10/08/2018 08:56

Mine stays on when I wash my hands. I take it off when I run (my fingers swell) or when I swim cos I worry about losing it.

Fiveletters · 10/08/2018 08:56

I take both my wedding and engagement rings off for bed, showering and sometimes cleaning. I am very much in the minority amongst my friends who have been wearing theirs since the day they went on!!

Ignoramusgiganticus · 10/08/2018 08:58

I never take mine off. Or any of my rings.

MatildaTheCat · 10/08/2018 08:58

Unless it’s loose the more you remove it the higher the risk of losing it.

LlamaPyjamas · 10/08/2018 08:59

I don’t wear mine in the house. Since I got married I mostly just wear my wedding ring and keep my engagement ring for special occasions. My rings are diamond set though, so would get wrecked if I wore them constantly. A plain band would stand up much better to constant wear.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 10/08/2018 09:02

My rings all contain stones (engagement, wedding & eternity) and I take them off at night, when showering, excercising or when cooking/baking in a way which messes up my hands.

I wear all 3 the rest of the time.

It’s a funny one because I know a lot of people who never take them off (and I do mean never), and I know plenty others who wear their wedding rings but not their engagement rings on a daily basis.

I guess I’m somewhere in the middle in that I do wear them every day and they are normal wear to me, but I also protect them by not wearing them in certain situations.

I am not a big jewellery wearer either I should say.

I clean them periodically with gentle liquid soap or fairy liquid and I get them professionally cleaned and the settings checked once a year at the jewellers where they were all bought.

MirandaWest · 10/08/2018 09:04

I take mine off if I make pastry but apart from that always stays on

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 10/08/2018 09:04

Oh and I’ve been married 18 years and never lost or misplaced them yet.

jaseyraex · 10/08/2018 09:04

I only take my rings off when baking/cooking if I'm mixing with my hands, other than that they stay on. I send them off for a good polish once a year though as they do get quite grubby! DH however takes his wedding band off for work as he does a lot of heavy lifting and it kept getting bashed out of shape.

KaosReigns · 10/08/2018 09:09

Mine comes off when handling raw mince and for one week a year I wear my husband's ring (Which he never wears) while both rings are replated and checked because they live a hard life. Different strokes though.

AutumnGlitterBall · 10/08/2018 09:10

I really only wear mine if I’m going out the house. I didn’t wear them for nearly a year while pregnant and just after due to fluid retention. I also have a silver cubic zirconia set for work as I don’t want damage the real things (police officer).

KaosReigns · 10/08/2018 09:12

I wear my husband's ring because my finger feels weird without a ring, not out of some need to constantly advertise my marital status by the way.

happymummy12345 · 10/08/2018 09:13

I never take any of my jewellery off. But then I'm a big jewellery person and I couldn't be without it.

Cath2907 · 10/08/2018 09:15

I put my on 13 years ago and have taken it off maybe 4 or 5 times since. These were only to clean it or to let my DD take a look. I only clean it if it gets properly painty of yucky. I put my wedding ring on 12 years ago and again have very very rarely removed it.

Some people do take them on and off more but if I took them off i'd lose them!!!!

mumsneedwine · 10/08/2018 09:17

After 27 years mine won't come off 😁. It's welded to the shape of my finger. Seems to have survived ok

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 10/08/2018 09:18

Is it actually made from silver or another metal that’s silver coloured like white gold or platinum? It matters because they’re different levels of hardness and need different care/will wear differently. You also need to make sure your wedding ring is the same metal so one doesn’t wear the other down.

I’ve also never heard of ‘minding’ a ring, though I got what you meant. Where are you from that that’s a turn of phrase, I’m curious?

Stephisaur · 10/08/2018 09:18

When it fits (sodding fat pregnancy fingers) I never take it off, unless I'm cleaning the ring itself or handling raw meat. I have a little ring holder in the kitchen for that.

ProseccoPoppy · 10/08/2018 09:18

Mine (plain gold wedding ring, Princess Di style engagement ring) stay on all the time. The only times I haven’t worn them were during my c sections to have my children.

mirialis · 10/08/2018 09:19

Just do what feels comfortable. I love my ring but don't wear it every day simply because I never wore rings regularly before, and I take it off before bed because I seem to swell in the middle of the night before shrinking again in the morning, so have woken up 'feeling' the ring on my finger which I didn't like.

Some days I feel like wearing it and some days I don't; absolutely unrelated to how I feel about the ring or the husband!
