How to mind an engagement ring

BWrose · 10/08/2018 08:44

The Mr popped the question recently. I don't generally wear jewellery in my day to day life but I want to wear this. It's a silver ring. How is an engagement ring minded? Do people take a ring off when washing hands? Etc

Mine like my wedding ring never comes off!

seven201 · 10/08/2018 09:56

I'm far too worries about losing my rings to take them off.

I got married over a year ago and have never taken my rings off. Both 18c and still lovely Grin

I never take mine off unless it is to put and cream on - I wear it day and night all the time and it gets filthy as I have a horse. But an annual clean gets it sparkly again!

I am not a big jewellery person and only ever wear some small studs in my ears. My wedding ring and engagement ring are different though.

I think "minding" to mean "look after", as in "would you mind my bag for me?" is a Scottish phrase. If the ring silver it's going to need a bit more care as they tarnish. Keep it on or not as feels comfortable, but you can always take it to a jeweller for a professional clean.

Wedding ring has never left my finger since it went on 1yr ago. Diamond set. Engagement ring 💍 like this went on a chain during pregnancy, but back on after.
If I wore it on and off I'd forget where I had left it and if I was supposed to be wearing it.
Don't know if that's what minding means

Odoreida · 10/08/2018 10:03

I take mine off to cook with - it is v unhygienic for food to get into the wards. Also when swimming in cold water. Always strap it to my watch for safety, it's a ritual.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 10/08/2018 10:05

I've never taken mine off since the day it went on, nor my wedding ring. It just doesn't get in the way and at least I know I won't lose it.

DH lost his wedding ring somewhere in our guest bedroom when he was making the bed; we both heard a 'clink' as it hit something and it's never been seen since.

Child minder? Someone who looks after child....

Silver is lovely but not as strong as gold so mind out if lifting heavy boxes or anything which could potentially crush it

Moralist, that's gloomy. FYI it's just a tan/pressure mark and will wear off if you no longer use ring

MeridianB · 10/08/2018 10:28

@Thingsthatgo Can jewellers do setting checks while you wait? And how do you clean your rings please?

Perhaps you could do one of those Q&A threads on here with Mumsnetters giving insight into unusual jobs? Smile

I only wear mine when I leave the house unless we are on holiday when I never take them off, both platinum diamond set. My husband is the same. The only jewellery I don't take off except to clean is diamond ear studs.

LEELULUMPKIN · 10/08/2018 13:41

I only wear both my wedding ring, engagement and "naice" watch when I go out of the house and never ever go "abroad" wearing them. DH on the other hand wears his wedding ring and equally "naice" watch all the time. They are all insured but It's not about value for me, just sentimental. A replacement wouldn't feel the same, hence being choosy where I wear them.

BWrose · 13/08/2018 15:25

I forget to reply back and say thanks for the replies. I decided I won't be wearing my ring every day. It will sit in it's box the majority of time on my bedside locker.

Congratulations!

I take my wedding and engagement rings off when making bread and pastry or they get clogged, or if i’m cleaning with harsh chemicals. Other than that I never take them off and I don’t bother with any other care beyond the occasional clean.

Because your ring is silver it may tarnish more easily than other metals, so keep silver polish on hand and give it a good clean with silver polish and a soft cloth every few months.

HelpmeobiMN · 13/08/2018 15:31

It seems a shame for you not to wear it! Don’t be frightened of it - jewellery exists to be worn and enjoyed.
