How to mind an engagement ring

BWrose · 10/08/2018 08:44

The Mr popped the question recently. I don't generally wear jewellery in my day to day life but I want to wear this. It's a silver ring. How is an engagement ring minded? Do people take a ring off when washing hands? Etc

I rarely take mine off except to clean it and to have it checked by try jeweler. Mine is only insured if it’s in a safe or I’m wearing it. It’s got a diamond. It’s very strong and it’s not going to get damaged or lost when it’s on my hand.

Just occasionally I’ll take it off and put it in the safe if I’m doing someth8ng like a long bike race or using power drills or something but that’s rare.

I tend to put mine on when I'm getting ready to leave the house and take it off again at bedtime. I don't sleep, shower or garden with it on, nor do messy cooking and heavy cleaning in it. It's a solitaire with quite a high set stone though so would get pretty dirty or damaged.

Mine is in a drawer somewhere. I realised that I don't like anything bling. Or the symbolism of ownership.

I wear my wedding band. If dh didn't wear his, I wouldn't wear mine either.

Figlessfig · 10/08/2018 09:19

Whatever you do, don’t wear it then take it off to wash your hands. You’ll end up leaving it in a public or work loo. My friend did this in a loo at.

I keep mine on all the time. I take it off to clean it now and then, but I do that in my dressing room and put the ring back on as soon as I finish cleaning it. That way, if I put it down without thinking, or get distracted, at least I know which room it’s in.

Mine won’t come off due to fat fingers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Winterbella · 10/08/2018 09:25

I only take mine off when I'm moisturising or tanning but not for the shower or washing hands. and when i take them off its only for around 5 minutes and then they are straight back on before I move away from them so that i don't forget.

asphodelus · 10/08/2018 09:30

Minding?

SillySallySingsSongs · 10/08/2018 09:33

Keep wedding ring on all the time unless showering.

Take engagement and eternity ring off when showering and at night.

Shoxfordian · 10/08/2018 09:34

I wear my engagement ring when I'm up and dressed; not overnight, not in the shower, not when I'm cooking.

CluedoAddict · 10/08/2018 09:35

I never take mine off. It's survived 22 years.

Poodles1980 · 10/08/2018 09:35

I rarely wear mine. Don’t wear massive amounts of jewelry so this is no different. I have them all well insured and kept somewhere safe. Someone once told me never to take your rings off near a sink Incase you knock them in by accident.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 09:38

I take mine off for bed, showering, anything messy, any kind of exercise. I keep it in the box it came in when I'm not wearing it.

I'm not sure how I would wash my hair with it on without strands of hair getting caught in the diamond.

Yadda · 10/08/2018 09:40

I'm guessing you're Irish or possibly Scottish dye to the use of 'minding' Smile.

In this context 'Minding' means to look after. I love this phrase especially when used to 'mind yourself'. Very comforting.

However, to the point. My rings are yellow gold. I wear my engagement ring all the time unless baking or painting, in other words doing something that might damage it.

Choose the ring you love, but also think about your wedding band as they need to sit together and the metals need to match.

Congratulations.

MeyMary · 10/08/2018 09:44

I take it off when gardening or baking. And during the night (if we sleep at home).

And when I go swimming or exercising.

But I don't take it off when washing my hands etc.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/08/2018 09:46

I take mine off in the gym, but only because I weight train so they get in the way and dig into my hands.

Also occasionally when I go out fellwalking - the altitude seems to make my hands swell.

They stay on the rest of the time and the settings are checked/rings repolished about every 5yrs.

IVEgotthePOWER · 10/08/2018 09:47

Do you all wash up in your rings? Do you wear rubber gloves if so?

Shmithecat · 10/08/2018 09:47

I never take my wedding ring or trilogy (push present) ring off. I'd probably lose them if I did.

CanineEnigma · 10/08/2018 09:47

I take mine off for bed/showering and if I have to do particularly messy cooking (e.g. pastry, raw meat handling). And I take them off while I rub in hand cream. My rings are a plain gold band and a gold band with a stone setting.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/08/2018 09:49

@IVEgotthePOWER

I keep them on but wear gloves, if on occasion I've run out of gloves I do take my rings off then.

mirialis · 10/08/2018 09:50

I am very happily married but I have to say that references to the wedding/engagement ring 'scar' that women have when they stop wearing them after many years (post their husband buggering off with an OW) doesn't make me feel inclined to wear it any more often than I feel comfortable with!

KatieHaslam22 · 10/08/2018 09:50

I take mine off when i’m washing up, cooking (if it’s going to get messy or i’m handling raw meat), and when painting or decorating (learnt the hard way)

TheMaddHugger · 10/08/2018 09:51

I [F] rarely wear mine. My husband wears his 24/7. Been married 30 + years. No one takes any notice. Not even the Well known Jeweller, his Uncle.
I do however have many ear piercings and wear weird fun and fancy ear rings daily.Grin

pinkhorse · 10/08/2018 09:52

I take mine off for weightlifting as I worry I'd bend or scratch it but it's on all the time apart from that.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/08/2018 09:52

My engagement ring is white gold with blue topaz and diamond setting.
I take it off at home and only wear it if I’m going out (but not swimming/gym). I’ve got a boisterous 8mth old and co sleep so wary of scratching him. Also I wouldn’t shower/wash up or cook wearing it x
