Maggots in wheelie bin

My bin is crawling! I mean there are thousands upon thousands! Ive tried to get rid of them with boiling water but everytime I go out more have appeared. Will the bin men refuse to take the bin? Im so mortified all my neighbours will be able to see and I will have to go out and clean the street up after they take the bins away. Hot water doesnt seem to kill them just makes more come up Sad

Can you not just move it away from the window?

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 20:20

Nope. The slabs are there and we have to fit 4 wheelie bins there. I'm not sitting them on the grass to kill it

Our bins are outside my ground floor flat window. The smell in Summer is unbelievable if you don't clean them. The baby oil trick you do once, it's permanent 'hack'.

Wife left the bin lid open, that is what caused our infestation

I have 10 cats and a dog, so i bought a black bin and just put their litter mess and his poo in that and take it to the tip once a week. The bin clips in so I have not noticed any smell escaping.

Beaverhausen · 09/08/2018 20:57

@Thatcherscold if you google bin cleaners in your area it should come up, it has become quite a thing now. Does help a lot, since bleaching and cleaning I have not had any smells around my bins and no maggots yet. Although I did notice some flies escape earlier, so will just use fly spray in the green bin later.

@Beaverhausen - That's a good idea - cheers for that! It's not really been a problem until this long hot summer but it's definitely not been nice this last couple of weeks!

When bin is emptied, boiling water kills maggots instantly, then you can tip the bin up somewhere like the garden with grass and then clean and dry the bin. If you tip the bin up somewhere else to drain it and then leave it open in the sun it will dry.

From now on use wheelie bin liners and double wrap anything that goes in.
