Maggots in wheelie bin

ItWasAlIADream · 09/08/2018 13:04

My bin is crawling! I mean there are thousands upon thousands! Ive tried to get rid of them with boiling water but everytime I go out more have appeared. Will the bin men refuse to take the bin? Im so mortified all my neighbours will be able to see and I will have to go out and clean the street up after they take the bins away. Hot water doesnt seem to kill them just makes more come up Sad

We had this once last year and dh now double bags everything and each morning opens the bin lid and sprays inside with fly killer , so far this year we’ve had no trouble .

Neshoma · 09/08/2018 14:52

So far we haven't had maggots but plenty of fly's around the bin.I think it's partly the heat. Our bin is in the shade which I think helps.

We've been double bagging everything and making sure the garden is clear of dog mess -as they seem to love that.

Loopylou6 · 09/08/2018 14:55

Yup, we had it too, looked like something outof a horror movie they completely covered my astro turf. They where all completely gone inthe morning tho, I'm presuming the birds had a right feast

QueenOfIce · 09/08/2018 14:56

I put bones chicken carcass etc in the freezer then on bin day chuck them in the bin. No more maggots and no stink. Wish bin men would go back to once a week!

Belle12345 · 09/08/2018 15:02

I've literally been double bagging all my non recycle stuff does make a difference tbh you would think they would make a wheelie bin with a lock tight lid so no flies especially with fortnightly collections x

WatcherintheRye · 09/08/2018 15:08

At a slight tangent, is it common practice to have separate bins for food waste? Phoned a friend yesterday (can't remember why the conversation turned to refuse!), and their council have a separate food waste collection every week. Ours just goes in the general household waste and gets picked up once a fortnight, which is way too long in the hot weather we've been having.

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 15:10

We have a wheelie bin for food and garden waste. It gets collected every 2 weeks

Theweasleytwins · 09/08/2018 15:13

I left the lid open and the birds ate them👍

WatcherintheRye · 09/08/2018 15:13

I think we can put peelings, melon skins etc. in with the garden waste, but not cooked food waste.

Passmethecrisps · 09/08/2018 15:15

We have a brown bin for garden and food waste. I wouldn’t say I had a proper phobia of maggots but seeing one makes me heart race and gives me bad dreams so the warm weather hasn’t been fun

we use composting bags for the food waste but I haven’t been careful enough about ensuring that they are fully tied up before going in the bin.

The best you can do is try to keep food waste properly wrapped up but even that in this Weather wouldn’t be unlikely to deter a fly. We found eggs all over the top of our waste bin. Not even on food.

HolyMountain · 09/08/2018 15:20

Currently got my bin empty and soaking with bleach and boiling water, it's bloody rank.

I have been double bagging my waste yet those bastard flies have still got in and produced those bastard maggots, I'm blaming those in this house who didn't pull the swing lid down on the indoor bin when they've emptied their plates

Must buy fly spray.

crazyhairbear · 09/08/2018 15:21

This happened to us this week, put the bin out this morning, came home to find that the bin isn't completely empty and the cushion I threw away because the dog had been sick on it is still wedged in the bottom of the bin with maggots still all over the top of it 😭 I can't bring myself to touch it so it's going to be a job for DP when he gets home from work.... all advise welcome please help lol

MarcieBluebell · 09/08/2018 15:21

God I have this too. Literally so embarrassed. I will pour bleach around the sides of the bins but I don't have a hose. Arrr

Lostmymarbles1985 · 09/08/2018 15:22

Jeyes fluid works a treat!

Imfinehowareyou · 09/08/2018 15:22

We aren't supposed to put food in the main bin but do get weekly collections of our food recycling bin. Our food recycling bin was crawling with maggots this week.

Thelastredwinegum · 09/08/2018 15:26

I bought some wheelie bin spray cleaner from somewhere like B&M/Home Bargains and also a Neutradol bin powder. When it had been emptied I sprayed thoroughly with the spray and put the powder in the bottom.

AngeloMysterioso · 09/08/2018 15:32

We had maggots in my actual kitchen bin a few weeks ago. Took the bag out and down to the communal bin shed, filled the empty bin with boiling water and bleach and now spray inside every morning and evening with fly killer.

chuckiecheese · 09/08/2018 15:36

When the bin has been emptied fill bucket/watering can/bowl with boiling hot water and Jeyes fluid and wash the bin out. Turn your bin upside down and bag dead maggots. Rinse and repeat until clean. Wink

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/08/2018 15:38

If a piece of meat is left unwrapped, a fly will find it and lay eggs on it, and they will rapidly hatch out into maggots, so careful wrapping is called for if you want to avoid it (a fly could easily get in when you open the bin to put another load in). If you want to avoid unnecessary plastic use you can wrap in newspaper.

@WatcherintheRye every Council negotiates its own waste disposal contracts, therefore every Council accepts different things for recycling and supplies different coloured bins. We can recycle only plastics with nos 1,2, 4, none of the other plastics. And we have to take glass bottles round to the Council tip for recycling. Garden waste is collected monthly, and only in the summer, and food waste not at all. It's a good job we have a flourishing compost heap!

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 15:44

We have 4 big wheelie bins.

Garden/food
Paper/ cardboard
Mixed recycling Inc. Glass
General waste

The food/ garden stuff is collected every 2 weeks and the others are on a 3 weekly cycle

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 15:46

I found the flies laid eggs round the edge of the bin and then the maggots slithered under the rim and dropped into the bottom of the bin

CraftyGin · 09/08/2018 15:47

I’m amazed that anyone is worried about the cleanliness of their wheelie bin. By definition, they are dirty.

The hot weather has been a paradise for flies, with no judgment on the hygiene of surroundings.

HardAsSnails · 09/08/2018 15:51

Watcher we have food waste collected weekly, for any and all foodstuffs, raw and cooked. The outside food waste bin seals quite well and seems fairly fly proof.

Cismyass · 09/08/2018 15:54

Spray with fly spray. We recently had bin maggotts DD(4) was thrilled-she's new to maggotts this killed them off good n proper, though i binned the dead ones which fell on the floor to avoid poisoning the birds.

RedBlu · 09/08/2018 16:21

We have had this a few times over the last couple of months as it's been so warm. Every time the bin is emptied, I wash it out, bleach it and between collections add some bin deodoriser stuff (meant to make it smell better and kills germs).

Hasn't made a difference. Once a fly gets in, it's too late and every time I open the bin lid at least one seems to get in.

Also tried boiling water and salt - both get rid of the one can see wriggling around on the top and lid but doesn't do anything to the ones lurking. I hate maggots, make my skin crawl!
