Maggots in wheelie bin

My bin is crawling! I mean there are thousands upon thousands! Ive tried to get rid of them with boiling water but everytime I go out more have appeared. Will the bin men refuse to take the bin? Im so mortified all my neighbours will be able to see and I will have to go out and clean the street up after they take the bins away. Hot water doesnt seem to kill them just makes more come up Sad

Gosh, I thought everyone had separate food bins now.... we are really lucky then. We get our food waste collected every week, BUT, we still do get flies and maggots. Scrapped out left over cat food is our issue, as flies have already landed on the old food and laid eggs, which then end up in the food bin. What I find really helps, is squirting bleach in the bottom of the bin and all around the rim each time I put a new bag in. .

Juanbablo · 09/08/2018 16:39

The bin men will take the bin. They are used to it in the hot weather. Just wash the bin out with bleach and hot water when it's empty.

Thesearmsofmine · 09/08/2018 17:33

We have to put our food waste in the general waste bin and it is collected every other week. We have a bin for paper and card and that’s it. No garden waste/glass etc

It is a nightmare in this weather with food waste and dirty nappies in the bin.

MumOfDiamonds · 09/08/2018 17:53

I had this at the weekend....I bought some cheap table salt and poured about half the tub in. It stopped them and killed the ones that were there. I also poured some soda crystals in there too which is also cheap!

This thread has terrified me. My bin was absolutely reeking earlier this week, even with the lid closed and bluebottles continually around it. I’ve avoided looking inside and it’s due to be collected tomorrow but then I’m going to have to deal with whatever the aftermath isn’t arent I

I live near a woodland so when the bin men have been I've left my bin lid open a d the birds have solved the problem. I the use bleach and lots of water.

spugzbunny · 09/08/2018 18:30

I heard that bin men refer to them as disco rice! Love that! Makes them sound less minging!

GoddamnCars · 09/08/2018 18:36

We’ve had them two collections in a row. No sign of of them until the couple of days before collection. Then loads of them swarming about when the bin was opened. I couldn’t do a fat lot so just left bin out and oddly enough after being emptied all of them had disappeared! Not even worth cleaning the bin for.

Beaverhausen · 09/08/2018 18:43

Had the same issue 2 weeks ago. Boiling water, bleach and fly spray. It was bloody disgusting, they were everywhere.

After bin was emptied got the bleach, hosepipe and just cleaned my bin out.

I now have someone who after bin collection comes around and cleans my black and green bin, only costs £3 a go. But they use something hat smells so nice and the black bin the put a nice thick wheelie bin bag in and tie it so that it does not come loose.

lou1221 · 09/08/2018 18:54

@user think it's the dog poo, even though it's all bagged, combined with the heat.

Dog poo?? Do you not have dog poo bins in the streets? The stench must be awful.

secretfreckle · 09/08/2018 18:58

Yesterday, the bin men did not empty our food waste bin. Looking inside, there are lots of maggots in there. I went on to our area's recycling website to lodge a complaint, but when I put in our postcode and street number and the date, a comment came up saying 'contaminated bin (see photo)'. I was not able to click on anything to see this photo, but they must be referring to the maggots! There was nothing else in there apart from food.
What are we supposed to do now!?!
I only jet washed it last week when it was last emptied. Not happy.

lou1221 · 09/08/2018 19:01

@secret that's really bad. I don't use my food bin, most waste is compost or the dog has.

ThisIsTheNational · 09/08/2018 19:02

I just went to put more in our food bin, and it is crawling with maggots. Yuck. Hopefully they will empty it tomorrow, and we can just bleach the life out of it.

SisyphusHadItEasy · 09/08/2018 19:03

It is summer, and maggots are an unfortunate reality.

I spray my wheelie bins with a 10% bleach solution when they are emptied. It doesn't prevent them, but keeps them under control from week to week.

I have never experienced a refusal to collect because of them.

McNutty · 09/08/2018 19:07

@secret go and empty it at your nearest recycling waste centre. There should be one not far from you. Just empty it in with the non recyclables.

CSIblonde · 09/08/2018 19:09

Salt on maggots. Then bleach in the bin. Also once clean, spraying Flash bleach spray on outside rim & lid & leaving not wiping off, seems to keep flies away.

CSIblonde · 09/08/2018 19:14

... and, to make a very manky, scratched, scruffy, old bin look brand new, apply baby oil with kitchen roll. Leave overnight and buff next day to remove excess.

JuneDonnelly · 09/08/2018 19:44

Get some Bin Buddy and sprinkle it liberally into your bin.

It kills flies and maggots and deodorises your bin as well.

Oldraver · 09/08/2018 19:54

I hate the little bastards.. we have a food waste bin which I mostly freeze and try not to put any food in the grey bin, which is cleaned and has a fresh bag by the wheelie bin cleaner.

The little fucker flies still laid eggs in the folds of the bag at the top

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 19:59

Bin buddy didn't kill mine. A shit ton of salt did though!

Wonkypalmtree · 09/08/2018 20:04

The only thing that worked for us was spraying “raid” to kill the buggers then once bin emptied boiling hot water and detergent to clean it, came back though

Member745520 · 09/08/2018 20:05

Had this problem a few years ago despite putting all garbage in tied plastic bags. After the bin was emptied I did have a few moments of panic and disgust but then common sense took over and I decided to leave it all to nature. I put the bin at the end of the garden with the lid open and by the next morning every maggot had gone. I didn't ponder too deeply on the reasons, but the robin seemed particularly happy that day! Grin

SoKissMeHard · 09/08/2018 20:09

Wtf why do you care if there are maggots in your wheelie bin?? Why do people clean their wheelie bin?? How do you have time for this to be a thing?!

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 20:12

Maggots stink, food and garden waste stinks too - why shouldn't my bin get cleaned so it doesn't waft a disgusting smell in my kitchen window??

ThatchersCold · 09/08/2018 20:14

Buffing bins with baby oil?

Cleaning bins after every collection?

Wow. I’ve had my bin 5 years and it’s never been cleaned. But it’s at the bottom of my garden so I couldn’t care less.
