To be pissed off at stupid comments?!

I've recently bought my own house. I'm relatively young (early 20s) and have been saving since I started working full time 6 years ago and have finally been able to afford a deposit and get a mortgage etc. Feeling proud of myself for managing to do this at my age if I'm honest.

So why do people feel the need to constantly tell me that I shouldn't have done so without a man? That I will not be able to cope with bills without a man? That I should have waited until I have a man because obviously I need a man to run the house?

WIBU to tell them to piss off with their unneeded comments?!

WEll, hang on a sec, who is telling you such things? And for what reason? Seems bizarre. If you're doing well (which you are) then more power to you! I wish I'd had the foresight and presence of mind to do what you've done when I was in my early 20s!

Justmuddlingalong · 01/08/2018 16:42

Congratulations! YWNBU to tell them to piss off. Just give them a confused look whenever they comment. Eejits.

Frogletmamma · 01/08/2018 16:48

Just wait till the sink is blocked Grin

IceCreamFace · 01/08/2018 16:50

What? who told you that?

mrs2468 · 01/08/2018 16:50

Just ignore those people more than likely just jealous. Well done you for saving and following what you want to do. You don't need a man to do these things with. Congratulations and enjoy your home.

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 16:52

@TopShagger Thank you! People at work including a woman who owned her own house for many decades before moving her partner in Hmm

@Frogletmamma I am dreading that tbf! I reckon I will have to watch a lot of DIY youtube videos! Although all these comments are referring to me financially not being able to cope without a man

Racecardriver · 01/08/2018 16:52

Yes, how could you ever afford to pay your bills yourself despite having done that up to this point and rent being more or less equal to mortgages in many areas. How will you ever cope you poor hapless woman?

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 16:54

@IceCreamFace works colleagues mainly!

@mrs2468 Thank you! I'm actually better off now than I was before I moved out because of the amount I was saving every month so I'm actually feeling pretty smug haha

HollowTalk · 01/08/2018 16:56

You've done amazingly well! Congratulations! Were you renting before or living at home?

Clairenewbie · 01/08/2018 16:56

Agree with pp, how will you cope without a hero coming along to rescue you from paying the mortgage.
Best to pay mortgage yourself that way if relationship fucks up you still have your home.

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 16:56

@Racecardriver I know, obviously without a mans input I never thought about finding out what bills may cost before buying the house! If only I had the guidance of a male!!

OP posts:
sockunicorn · 01/08/2018 16:58

huge well done for doing it all alone at your age Flowers.

you will regret doing it alone when you hear the rumble of the bin wagon at 6am and have to do the "oh shit" dash down the driveway with your bin in your PJs! otherwise i think you'll be just fine Wink

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 16:59

@HollowTalk I was living with my mom before but still paying board and all my own bills (car insurance, phone contract, pension, private healthcare etc)

@Clairenewbie My point axactly! If I had to wait until I find a man to buy a house with I'll be collecting my pension before I bough one :')

OP posts:
PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 17:00

@sockuniform I must admit I have woken up to the sound of the binmen and realised I hadn't put the bins out the night before but luckily because there's only me I just stayed in bed all comfy because I don't make enough rubbish to fill my big black bin, bliss! Grin Wink

JustLikeBefore · 01/08/2018 17:02

why would anyone say that?

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 01/08/2018 17:06

Just tell them you don't need a penis to set up a direct debit!

DameSquashalot · 01/08/2018 17:07

Don't worry. I work with someone in her early 20s. She has bought a house with her boyfriend. Everyone always asks how come they could afford it so young?

My point is, they would find something to criticise no matter what. Just ignore.

parklives · 01/08/2018 17:08

I'm amazed anyone has said that to you, let alone more than one person.
I would just genuinely laugh if someone said that to me.
Currently lying in bed because I've put my back out putting a heavy thing in the loft on my own as no man here either!

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 17:13

@JustlikeBefore I honestly have no clue, especially because the majority of these people live alone themselves, although are older than me

@DameSquashalot it doesn’t particularly bother me or make me question it but it’s a bit embarrassing when it’s said in front of a load of people Confused

YearOfYouRemember · 01/08/2018 17:13

I can't believe someone never mind more than one person said you shouldn't have a mortgage without a man.

I bought my flat in London at 23 by myself. No one said anything about it never mind I shouldn't buy withou5 a bloke Hmm.

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 17:14

@parklives if I’m honest my mom did need to help me put all my boxes in the loft because I feared for my life haha!

OP posts:
PirateWeasel · 01/08/2018 17:15

Weirdly, my DH got this when he bought his first house as a single man, and people kept telling him he should have just rented until he found someone. I honestly don't get it. Imean, it's not like a person is stuck with the same house for their entire life!! If you do meet someone and want to move in together, true, he might not like your house (I hated DH's!) but then you just sell it and buy somewhere else together! Some people be crazy.

PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 17:16

@YearOfYouRemember I know of a few people our age who have bought without partners so I’m more confused than anything else because it’s not like I’m the only person in the history of the world to afford a house by myself Hmm

OP posts:
PriscillaSM · 01/08/2018 17:18

@PirateWeasel maybe there’s just a problem with any single person buying one then Confused to be honest my house wouldn’t be suitable to start a family in but as I’m currently single I’m hoping to not reach that hurdle for a fair few years!

OP posts:
OftenHangry · 01/08/2018 17:18

Tell them to fuck off. I can even teach you how to say it a different language if you fancy.

Ignore these people and just be happy you are doing amazingly!

Remember. People will always find something to bitch about. If you waitedfor a man they would be saying why can't you do it without him. Dommed if you do, doomed if you don't 🙄
