Can you roll your tongue? And did you know....

it's nothing to do with genetics after all?

Despite what most of us were probably taught at school! It was debunked, as you can be taught to roll your tongue.

Can you touch your toes?

I can roll my tongue, and despite being very fat overweight, I have no difficulties in touching my toes. My slim DH can do neither.

AIBU to ask what you can or can't do that you take for granted? Or that's an interesting body fact?

I can roll my tongue and I didn’t have a clue it wasn’t genetic. I can touch my toes. I can’t touch my nose with my tongue.

NewYearNewMe18 · 24/07/2018 22:07

Who 'debunked' the tongue rolling ?

Unescorted · 24/07/2018 22:09

I can touch my nose with my tongue.

I can't whistle

LaPufalina · 24/07/2018 22:09

I can't do either! But didn't know it had been debunked... I'm so far off being able to roll it that I look ridiculous if I try (and my family sometimes request it for a laugh)

User5trillion · 24/07/2018 22:10

I can roll my tongue as can my ds but dd and dh cant - I always thought it was genetic. I cant touch my toes or lick my own nose - shudder 😂. I can bend my thumb so it touches my wrist and I can bend the first joint of my first finger in a right angle.

Grandmaswagsbag · 24/07/2018 22:11

I taught myself to roll my tounge! It took quite a few weeks of practice as a young teen. I have no idea why i felt the need to acquire such a skill, I think I felt a bit left out that I couldn’t do it.

steff13 · 24/07/2018 22:12

You know, I've always been bothered by the fact that my parents and my brother can roll their tongues and I can't.

I'm very fat and can touch my toes fine.

fadingfast · 24/07/2018 22:13

Not only can I roll my tongue but I can do a weird sort of 'triple' roll, which I thought was pretty rare. I'll be greatly disappointed if it can in fact be taught and I'll have to think of a new party trick

bluerunningshoes · 24/07/2018 22:13

I can roll my tongue and touch my nose with my toungue.

I can't, however, move my eyebrows individually.

KimchiLaLa · 24/07/2018 22:13

I can't wink
I can barely whistle
Can't touch my toes
Can't roll my tongue

FissionChips · 24/07/2018 22:15

I can wobble my eyeballs and make my toes separate into the Vulcan salute (took me about 5 months to train them to do it). Can’t touch toes or roll my tongue though.

kelper · 24/07/2018 22:15

I can roll my tongue, DS can too, DH can't as his tongue seems to be too fat if that makes sense.
However I couldn't touch my toes until last year when I started running, and now I can!

DontMakeMeShushYou · 24/07/2018 22:15

I can't whistle, I can't touch my nose with my tongue, and I can't roll my tongue.

I can, however, not only touch my toes, but I can also place my palms flat on the floor whilst standing with my feet together....because I have short legs and a long body.

Gammeldragz · 24/07/2018 22:15

I didn't know the tongue thing was not genetic. Would love to know how it was debunked!
user5trillion same here with the bendy/joints fingers and thumbs. I think it's slight hypermobility, I can also touch toes and can still put my foot behind my head. I'm not fit at all, just flexible. Probably also like more likely to get arthritis!

HoomanMoomin · 24/07/2018 22:16

I learned to roll my tongue after getting it pierced at 22 yo.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/07/2018 22:17

I thought it was partly genetic OP?

cablewable · 24/07/2018 22:17

I have control of each eyebrow, each ear and each eye...I can roll my tongue but struggle to touch my toes

SciFiFan2015 · 24/07/2018 22:18

I can turn my tongue upside down! And roll and touch my nose.

IamPickleRick · 24/07/2018 22:18

Source please.

Touching your toes has bugger all to do with fitness or weight either, I am hypermobile, overweight and can get my leg over my head.

JacquesHammer · 24/07/2018 22:18

I learned to roll my tongue after getting it pierced at 22 yo

I lost my tongue roll after getting it pierced Biscuit

JacquesHammer · 24/07/2018 22:19

Shit I meant to put a Grin and hit the one below.

Sorry!!

LyraLieIn · 24/07/2018 22:19

I can wobble my eyeballs too, and taught a friend to do it at primary school. So that one isn't genetic either

Kingkiller · 24/07/2018 22:20

I can roll my tongue and knew the genetics thing had been debunked. And I can put my hands flat on the floor with my elbows slightly bent and my legs straight. I can also get one foot behind my head (used to be able to get both, separately). Very slim dd can barely get her hands further than her knees!

MissCharleyP · 24/07/2018 22:21

I can’t roll my tongue, DB can but neither me nor DM or DF can. I can’t touch my toes, even when I was younger and did ballet I couldn’t do it.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/07/2018 22:23

I can flex the very top joint of my index finger whilst keeping the rest of the finger totally straight. I've not found many other people who can do this. Also can roll tongue, touch toes but cannot whistle
