Can you roll your tongue? And did you know....

SilverHairedCat · 24/07/2018 22:03

it's nothing to do with genetics after all?

Despite what most of us were probably taught at school! It was debunked, as you can be taught to roll your tongue.

Can you touch your toes?

I can roll my tongue, and despite being very fat overweight, I have no difficulties in touching my toes. My slim DH can do neither.

AIBU to ask what you can or can't do that you take for granted? Or that's an interesting body fact?

I can touch my toes and wiggle my ears. I cannot do anything with my tongue.

I cannot do body isolations however hard I practise Sad

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 24/07/2018 22:51

I’m always surprised at what ease I can touch my toes. Im not over weight but I’m nearing it and I’m unfit.

I did know about the tongue thing though.

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 24/07/2018 22:52

Before I knew about the tongue thing I thought it would be a good DNA test, of sorts.

BrokenWing · 24/07/2018 22:56

Dh can touch his toes as he has short legs, long torso (fat belly), and incredibly long arms! I have long legs and I am about an inch short of touching my toes. Even though we are the same height his long arms are useful as he can reach much higher. I tell him he had the figure of a chimp!!! 🦍😂

JustLikeBefore · 24/07/2018 22:56

SilverHairedCat

sliver?(spit) sorry dyslexia getting the better of me.

you create a tiny bubble on your tongue then gently blow it of the tip, if floats down to the floor like a bubble from a bubble wand.

Wombat44 · 24/07/2018 22:56

DD2 can roll her tongue, but DH, DD1 and I can't do it. I can touch my toes easily (in fact I can put my hands flat on the floor with my legs straight), but I can't raise my eyebrows, whistle or snap my fingers. I can do a Vulcan salute with my right hand, but not with my left!

clary · 24/07/2018 22:57

My mum could wiggle her ears and I've recently discovered that DS2 can as well. I can't. Is it genetic? it's certainly unusual.

DD is a bit rubbish, she can't click her fingers (despite being in West Side Story!), she can't raise one eyebrow, she can't whistle, she can't even wink (looks hilarious trying). However if people say, well, what CAN you do, she does this bizarre shamrock thing with her tongue. Very weird. is that rare? Ds2 can do it too.

MelanieCheeks · 24/07/2018 22:57

Oooh oooh more whistling-parping tongue rollers! Hoo hoo!

We should form a band, bound to be money in this rare skill.

SilverHairedCat · 24/07/2018 22:58

@JustLikeBefore I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be obtuse, I should have cottoned on! However making that float is quite impressive!

oh I see loads of other PPs can do the shamrock/clover tongue thing. Maybe not so rare. Tho this thread will clearly attract the odd of tongue Grin

kaldefotter · 24/07/2018 23:00

I can touch my forearms with my thumbs.

AnExcellentUsername · 24/07/2018 23:01

I can roll my tongue, cross my eyes, move my eyebrows independently of each other, wiggle my ears, touch my toes despite being a fatty and can whistle like a champion. Next stop Britain's Got Talent...?

JustLikeBefore · 24/07/2018 23:03

SilverHairedCat you weren't? Smile its fine, I just read it back, and I didn't explain it very well regardless of a dodgey spelling.

can someone please tell me the correct way of spelling it, as auto correct hasn't a clue what I'm trying to type!

Cattenberg · 24/07/2018 23:04

Despite what most of us were probably taught at school! It was debunked, as you can be taught to roll your tongue.

I remember being taught this at secondary school and it was in one of our textbooks. I couldn't seem to roll my tongue then, but later I discovered I could do it if I was looking in a mirror.

I've never been able to touch my toes and I can't even sit up straight with my legs straight in front of me. Very unsupple legs. A dance teacher once told me that in her experience, people are either leg-benders or back-benders. Which makes sense to me, as I could do Turkish back bends when I was younger.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 24/07/2018 23:05

I used to be able to blow bubbles out of my eyes... I think! Is that a thing??
As a kid I used to lie back in the bath underwater, mouth closed, nose pinched, eyes open and blow like you are trying to pop your ears. You can feel the bubbles tickling as they come out of your eyes.

Unless I imagined all this! Felt very real though...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/07/2018 23:06

I can roll my tongue. Also, even as an individual of quite some porterage, I can very easily touch my toes.... but only with the toes on the other foot....

FrangipaniBlue · 24/07/2018 23:06

I can:

Roll my tongue
Touch my toes
Raise one eyebrow
Make my double jointed thumb bend the wrong way
Bend my hypermobile fingers backwards
Crack most of my bones

DH can do none of these but he can:

Use his toes like fingers (fucking monkey boy)
Blow a raspberry (I cannot for the life of me do this!!)

FrangipaniBlue · 24/07/2018 23:08

Oh and I can wobble my eyeballs

DS can make just one eyeball turn inward while the other keeps looking straight forward!!

Leela2 · 24/07/2018 23:08

I can't roll my tongue, or roll my rrrr's, wish I could. But I can pop my thumbs out of joint, touch my toes despite being short and the size of a hippo, and do a splendid Les Dawson mouth thingy

Ohyesiam · 24/07/2018 23:08

I can’t do those really satisfying loud whistles that people do at gigs with their fingers in their mouth.

MooChops89 · 24/07/2018 23:08

I can roll my tongue, click my jaw when I open my mouth and click my thumbs just by bending them.

I can't roll my 'R's for the life of me. People have tried to explain how they do it but I just can't!

BackforGood · 24/07/2018 23:08

I can roll my tongue and touch my toes, but have never been able to blow raspberries (on babies tummies) Shock

AstonMartini · 24/07/2018 23:09

I am thoroughly traumatised now, as I had always though it was genetic (thanks for nothing, Mrs Pearson). I can touch my toes, because I am very short but have long arms and legs and very little body in between. It makes buying clothes great fun. Confused

Takfujimoto · 24/07/2018 23:10

I can only roll my tongue into a tube shape, but I can fold it as well.
I can wiggle both ears together and independently like a puppy.
I'm a size 10 but I can not only touch my toes but put both palms flat on the ground bending over.
I can wiggle my little toes separately from the rest.

DH can do none of these!
He gets disproportionately jealous when I use these mad skills to entertain the kids 😂

GazeboLantern · 24/07/2018 23:32

I can make my ears click. Apparently it can be so loud that people standing near me in a quiet room can hear it!

I have two dc with very long tongues: one can lick their chin but not their nose, the other can lick their nose but not their chin. Neither dh nor I can do either of these things.
