Can you roll your tongue? And did you know....

it's nothing to do with genetics after all?

Despite what most of us were probably taught at school! It was debunked, as you can be taught to roll your tongue.

Can you touch your toes?

I can roll my tongue, and despite being very fat overweight, I have no difficulties in touching my toes. My slim DH can do neither.

AIBU to ask what you can or can't do that you take for granted? Or that's an interesting body fact?

I can’t roll my tongue but my brother and DH can and I can’t raise an individual eyebrow but they can do a proper rogerbmoore eyebrow raise so I wonder if their is a connection. If you can tongue roll you can raise each eyebrow individually.

I can wobble my eyebrows, touch my toes, bed the top joint of my index fingers without bending the rest of the finger and pop one thumb out of the joint.

Justlikebefore - saliva

JustLikeBefore · 25/07/2018 09:14

thank you bishop Smile
it's quite frustrating sometimes, as I know a word is not right, but for the life of me I can't put the right combination of letters together to trigger my autocorrect, I can spot the correct spelling I just can't remember it, to write IYKWIM.

See now I shall remember in future to throw and A into the mix which will hopefully trigger the spelling of saliva next timeGrin

I can fan out my toes on my right foot so it looks like a Monster Munch, but I can only get my left foot toes to fan a little bit. DH can’t do this at all and thinks I am a freak. Grin

Source please.

The identical twins study showing that ability to tongue-roll is not a simple inherited feature was published in 1952 (Matlock P. Journal of Heredity, 43, 100-102). A bigger study showing that there are hereditary factors influencing the ability to tongue-roll but that these do not provide a complete explanation was published in 1971 (Reedy JJ et al. Journal of Heredity, 62, 125-127).

I can flare my nostrils. In time with music etc.

I can fan my toes too, but can't roll my tongue.

I can however poke my tongue out, then fold it completely in half horizontally.

I've never met anyone who can also do this.

girlandboy · 25/07/2018 10:05

Surely touching your toes is a lot to do with leg length? People with short legs but long arms would surely have an advantage?

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 25/07/2018 10:06

EDS means I can do most of the bendy things, but I can't quite reach my nose with my tongue.

I can wiggle just my little toe.

TorviBrightspear · 25/07/2018 10:12

I can

Roll my tongue, and into odd shapes too
Touch toes, but not when fat, as the roll of fat gets in the way. I know I can bend far enough, though.
Crack most joints
Still pretty flexible at 50
Blow raspberries
Raise an eyebrow

And maybe more I haven't thought of.

Bombardier25966 · 25/07/2018 10:13

Not a hope of rolling my tongue, I'm tongue tied. I can't be the only one?!

TorviBrightspear · 25/07/2018 10:14

Oh yeah, forgot I can use toes like fingers and pick stuff up.

DCs can do all these between them, they might each have one or two they can't do.

DontFuckingSayIt · 25/07/2018 10:31

I don't think I consciously learned to roll my tongue into a tube but I definitely taught myself to turn it over both ways. I can also fold it back on itself and touch my uvula like a PP said, no idea how long I've been able to do that for. I remember being taught at school that it is genetic but I would never have been able to do the tongue flipping thing without a lot of practice.

I remember having to teach myself to raise my eyebrows individually, and to do that finger-drumming thing where you tap each finger down one at a time in quick succession like bitchy women in films when they're being kept waiting.

I can snarl/curl my lip like Sylvester Stallone but only on the left side. No idea how I'd begin to learn to do it on the other side or if it's even possible.

Could touch my toes in any position even when I was morbidly obese; I'm 5'3". Can pick things up with my feet, take the plug out of the bath, switch the tap on and off, put the plug back in with my toes.

Seems I've been taking a lot of this for granted Grin

SerenDippitty · 25/07/2018 10:43

I can point with my big toe, both feet. Can't whistle.

MayFayner · 25/07/2018 11:03

bombadier I’m tongue tied too. Even to lick my lips I have to move my lips towards my tongue 😂

I cannot roll my rs, not a hope.

IGiorni · 25/07/2018 11:44

I can wink but only with one eye, DS can wink with either and OH can’t do it at all.

I can do this weird thing where I can push the tip of my nose kind of out of joint then pop it back. I can also do it with the joint at the bottom of my thumb Hmm

donutsarelife · 25/07/2018 13:46

I can roll my tongue. My DD can't but she can lick her elbow which cost me £5 when I bet she couldn't!
