I can't afford a whole new kitchen, but I'm thinking new tiles would make all the difference here wouldn't they? What would you replace them with?

I don't like the worktops either (ugly mottled grey granite) but can they be easily replaced and what would you choose instead?

New door handles might help too as these ones are a bit old-school.

I'd love some design advice from those of you who are much better at these things than me.

what sorts of colours do you like?

speakout · 04/07/2018 22:16

I am no expert in interior fashion, but it looks functional to me. The only thing I would get rid of are the bar stools.

AppleKatie · 04/07/2018 22:16

I quite like it OP. I’d be tempted to change the floor but that’s about all I think.

Movablefeast · 04/07/2018 22:16

Your kitchen looks lovely and bright. I think grey in general has been done to death so if you change tile backsplash, counter tops and have a new wall paint color it could look totally different. I would also change the black chairs around the island.

myheartgoesout · 04/07/2018 22:16

I'd do the wall tiles and the lighting - the rest is fine.

LadyGAgain · 04/07/2018 22:16

Your kitchen looks lovely. The first thing that jumped at me was the floor. Could you modernise it? Maybe large light grey tiles to match?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/07/2018 22:17

I think the bar stools look wrong for the style of kitchen too.
As you have a wooden floor you could go for wooden worktops?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 04/07/2018 22:20

Wooden worktops are a pain to keep looking decent.
Could you have splashbacks instead of tiles. Much easier to keep clean and could add colour if you wanted.

PointlessUsername · 04/07/2018 22:23

I think a wood worktop would look nice.

SparklyMagpie · 04/07/2018 22:23

Ahhh and to think I can only just fit a cooker and fridge into my tiny tiny kitchen. One can dream.

Personally I'd get a new floor, I think apart from that it looks fab as it is...and maybe change handles if I really had to pick something else

sunshinecity6 · 04/07/2018 22:30

I love a makeover. Here's what I'd do: paint the units navy & change the handles. New paler worktop. re-tile using plain white rectangular tiles laid out herringbone style and grouted with bronze or gold grout. & change those bar stools.

Racecardriver · 04/07/2018 22:32

The bar stools really let it down. The flooring is too warm for the rest of the kitchen not to mention the colour is out of date. You could try restainibg/psibtibg/replacing it.

fluffypudcats · 04/07/2018 22:49

From here, I think the worktop is lovely and personally would keep that. The tiles don't match though - I'd change them. The floor is lovely, but not with the style of kitchen. Like the large floor tile idea - mine are natural slate. Personally not keen on those type of handles but if you replace them, the new ones will need the same size fittings etc

OrcinusOrca · 04/07/2018 22:51

Wooden worktops are easy if you osmo oil them

maybebaby7487682 · 04/07/2018 22:52

The thing about the floor is that it goes throughout the whole ground floor of the house, so it's a bit awkward to change that in isolation. I'd rather change the worktops and tiles to something that will go with the floor better. I do like the idea of a wooden worktop, but they're difficult to look after, so it's really got to be granite or corian or something.

Get rid of the island, it will make the whole space look so much better. Agree with pp about the floor, it is by far the most dated part.

grumpy4squash · 04/07/2018 23:01

I wouldn't have really noticed the tiles or doorhandles compared to the floor, which sticks out as being actually quite bad. As do the bar stools; those are very, very dated.

TheVanguardSix · 04/07/2018 23:03

I love the kitchen! But...
The bar stools need to go and the lighting above them.
I'd paint the kitchen a creamier white/ivory/vanilla with tiles to match.
Wooden worktops
knobs instead of handles
Keep the floors or go a bit darker
lose the black range cooker/update
Replace the sink with a farmhouse porcelain sink and nice taps
Get a classy linen blind on that window

peoplearemean · 04/07/2018 23:05

It's beautiful but the tiles kill it. Either need black tiles or a bright colour splash back. I wouldn't have wood myself with thy as flooring but it doesn't offend me and understand it runs throughout.

SequinsOnEverything · 04/07/2018 23:08

I like the floor and would try to find a worktop that complements it.

AmyLou14 · 04/07/2018 23:13

Something like this would look good, recently used this blue for my full kitchen. It would be nice on your island and maybe off white on cabinets. If your handy respraying is easy but time consuming. We did our bit by bit over a month. Stainless steel in behind the cooker or maybe mottled mirror tiles?

The only things that jump out at me are the bar stools, which are outdated. Everything else looks perfectly fine.

cmlover · 04/07/2018 23:33

I think some hanging lights would look nice,

I think you could change the flooring to tiles with out looking odd with the rest of the house.

I'd change the handles to sliver.

AppleKatie · 04/07/2018 23:35

To those saying the bar stools are dated- I agree, but what would you suggest she replaces them with?

speakout · 05/07/2018 07:29

Are the bar stools needed or used? Is there an actual kitchen table- do the family have somewhere else to eat? Is there additional seating nearby- behind the camera for instance/
Although the kitchen looks large there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of worktop- to me that looks like a perfect plating up area and I would prefer it to some place where people hang around on bar stools.
I would get rid of any stools completely and forget the idea of some "bar ".
