I can't afford a whole new kitchen, but I'm thinking new tiles would make all the difference here wouldn't they? What would you replace them with?

I don't like the worktops either (ugly mottled grey granite) but can they be easily replaced and what would you choose instead?

New door handles might help too as these ones are a bit old-school.

I'd love some design advice from those of you who are much better at these things than me.

An eyesore? Really?

wowfudge · 05/07/2018 10:25

The bar stools aren't brass - they're chrome and the brass looking areas are the reflection of the floor.

Sidge · 05/07/2018 10:27

It's a fundamentally nice kitchen but there's too much going on and it doesn't flow, the tiles/flooring/stools/worktop all jar.

The units are fine. The sink and taps are fine. The worktops are fine. The handles are fine.

I would change the flooring (maybe lay Amtico over the wood effect floor?) and go for something slightly darker, such as a slate grey which will then tone in with the worktops. Get rid of the blue tiles and replace with glass splashbacks in a complementary colour. I'd go for something quite bright like an aqua.

Replace the bar stools with fewer and in a more contemporary colour - chrome not brass to sync with the handles and taps.

Sidge · 05/07/2018 10:28

Ah so they are wowfudge good spot.

Changing the floor will help remove a lot of the 'yellowy' look to the kitchen then.

Onedaylikethi5 · 05/07/2018 10:33

I am baffled. Asides the bar stools there is nothing wrong with that kitchen, in fact it is lovely. I clicked on expecting to see some dated awful 80's nightmare.

Granite tops are wonderful, keep them change the tiles, paint, light fittings and handles but it would be a huge waste of money to change the tops.

PrimalLass · 05/07/2018 10:35

This thread is a good example of how different our taste as, as there is no way I would replace those tiles with something bright and aqua.

I would go more with AmyLou14 's suggestion and add in something like navy - possibly to the island unit, with upholstered stools, and possibly also to the walls.

PrimalLass · 05/07/2018 10:36

I am baffled too Oneday.

Bluelady · 05/07/2018 10:46

That kitchen's fine. If it were mine I'd get rid of the bar stools and replace the tiles with cream metro tiles. Do NOT grout in bronze or gold - I'm assuming your partner isn't a footballer!

Bluntness100 · 05/07/2018 10:51

What is it you don't like?

If you don't like the worktops and tiles then change them. The colour is personal preference.

I'd also change the stools though. They are too dark and heavy for the room.

nervousnails · 05/07/2018 10:52

That is a perfectly good kitchen. Just switch the bar stools, OP. Unless you are minted, of course. Grin

Deadringer · 05/07/2018 11:02

I think it's lovely, my kitchen is 20 years old and very dated and I would love something like this. If I was being really fussy I would change the tiles and I would paint the island, maybe dark blue, and replace the stools with something to match the new colour.

myheartgoesout · 05/07/2018 20:53

Looking at the kitchen again the tiles match the paint but neither tone with the kitchen units or the floor. The bar stools and the lights over the island look out of place...too modern.
