I can't afford a whole new kitchen, but I'm thinking new tiles would make all the difference here wouldn't they? What would you replace them with?

I don't like the worktops either (ugly mottled grey granite) but can they be easily replaced and what would you choose instead?

New door handles might help too as these ones are a bit old-school.

I'd love some design advice from those of you who are much better at these things than me.

It looks absolutely fine.

Loopytiles · 05/07/2018 07:42

Unless you have plenty of spare money would just change the stools and add some colour with accessories.

Loopytiles · 05/07/2018 07:43

That is a very large, expensive kitchen already.

dudsville · 05/07/2018 07:44

I think there's too much going on there, so many different textiles and colours and styles. I'd be looking to streamline one or the other a bit.

I agree with you in that I also don't like the work surface. If you are going to change that then it's a good time to do the tiles because the change in work surface will make that job tricky for a builder (ours managed to keep our tiles pristine but it took ages and therefore cost a lot).

InNeedOfALieInNow · 05/07/2018 07:46

The first thing that jumped out at me was that the floor and the worktops clash. I’d want to change one (probably the floor) or the other to tone it all to match. I’d opt for splash backs not tiles and stick generally with the white/grey scheme everywhere else. Yes to changing the island stools

wowfudge · 05/07/2018 07:46

I don't see the issues, but you have to live with it OP. If I'm being picky, I'm not keen on the cornice and the way there's a sort of bridge cutting across the cooker hood linking the units either side of it so I'd look at removing those. I think the biggest "issue" is that the floor doesn't go with the grey - make it darker and it will add warmth and depth. It's basically a classic looking kitchen and the bar stools are a bit naff in comparison.

Sleephead1 · 05/07/2018 07:48

I like the tiles I wouldn't change them I honestly thinks it's a nice kitchen but if I changed anything it would be the work tops

mai5x · 05/07/2018 07:51

I'd change the worktops and modernise cupboard handles. The tiles are nice and modern. Maybe some new stools depending on what colour worktop you go for!

Excited0803 · 05/07/2018 08:09

Most important is to get rid of / change the bar stools, brass looks silly. The material and colour for the stools should match other things in the kitchen.

I'd change the handles on the drawers to match the doors, or change them all e.g. to curvier ones with a twist.

Tiles and worktop need to go with the floor; textured white for tiles? I can't decide what worktop colour I want for our (much paler) wood floors, so I won't suggest anything there.

Candyflip · 05/07/2018 08:15

Worktops, floor, windows, chairs and light fittings look worse than the tiles and the handles.

PrimalLass · 05/07/2018 08:20

The kitchen is absolutely fine.

speakout · 05/07/2018 08:22

I am in a different camp here.

I really don't see the point in changing a kitchen unless it is necessary.

Consumerism gone mad.

The kitchen in this picture looks perfectly adequate, apart from donating the bar stools to charity I wouldn't change anything.

DownstairsMixUp · 05/07/2018 08:24

I would get rid of the island and have a kitchen dining table, change the handles on doors as well but that's about it

GreasyFryUp · 05/07/2018 08:26

Change the cornice in top of the cupboards to a plain one it's a bit 80s. Change handles, glass splash back instead of tiles. Paint cupboards, leave worktop.

iknowimcoming · 05/07/2018 08:27

The thing that jars with me is the wall and tile colour versus the cupboard and floor colour. I think changing the tiles and walls to a warm colour or just plain cream would make a huge difference and would also pull the wood floor in nicely. The worktops will be costly to change so I wouldn't bother and I think it'll look fine when you take away the tiles. Also get some new bar stools (probably just two to make the space bigger or ones that tuck under completely out of the way. I'd weigh up how much you are really likely to use them and select some based on comfort ideally.

carlitamurray32 · 05/07/2018 08:41

It’s actually really nice!! This jumped out at me as I used to work for Symphony kitchens many moons ago! Looks like a nice quality kitchen from the pic so please do not be tempted to paint the units, unless you get them sprayed professionally it looks blinking awful and it’s stilk debatable with a professional spray!!! You will regret!

Is the worktop granite? Unless you’re going to replace it with something of a similar quality I would be tempted to leave it, however a grey Carrera Quartz would update it and would go lovely with the units and your range, (this looks like marble but is much more hard wearing for kitchens). As someone else said wood countertops are a pig to maintain.

If you change the worktop I’d change the sink to a porcelain one and add a more traditional shaped tap I think the sink and taps are too contemporary for the units.

You could defs change the handles.

Tiles look pretty inoffensive from the pic but hard without seeing them close up.

Would 100% change the bar stools if you only did one thing, they are not your friend. Also definitely change the lights!

Thomas Howley and Neptune kitchens are good for inspiration. x

AlwaysTheEnd · 05/07/2018 09:20

Apart from the bar stools I like the kitchen. I like the worktop and I like the floor and tiles.

I'd maybe change the handles but I can't really see them.

I'd leave it be then I'd wait a few years and have the whole lot redone when it actually needs it.

Plimmy · 05/07/2018 09:27

I’d give my right arm for a lovely big kitchen done as well as yours.

Can’t see the point in changing anything. Waste of time and money.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/07/2018 09:39

And this is why we are wrecking our planet.

KinkyAfro · 05/07/2018 09:42

I like everything apart from the floor, I'd go either black or brightly coloured floor to lift it - teal would work well with the greys

SnapCards · 05/07/2018 09:47

I'd change nothing.

Maybe the floor if I had money to burn.

FoofFighter · 05/07/2018 09:59

Lovely kitchen op.

Echoing lots of other posts all I would change is flooring (to a dark grey lino) and the worktops. Everything else is more than ok

MrsPatmore · 05/07/2018 10:03

I think the floor looks lovely and warm with white/cream units. I would have a good quality wooden worktop - they don't take masses of maintenance, maybe once a year oiling. Lighter tiles would look nice. Try looking on Houzz for inspiration. The bar stools could be changed to white ones with light wooden legs - Scandinavian style.

PrimalLass · 05/07/2018 10:09

This.
