I'm so discombobulated I forgot an AIBU. AIBU to be discombobulated? There, that'll do.

Gutted. He lights up my afternoon.

KingscoteStaff · 01/07/2018 13:09

Do we know where he's going?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/07/2018 13:09

Mine too. He's a fantastic interviewer and seems to move effortlessly from the lighthearted stuff to the more serious. He's done some incredibly sensitive interviews with people who've experienced awful, awful things and the rapport he establishes is almost palpable.

I wish John Humphreys would leave Today. Then I might be able to listen to it again.

Noooo! Why, Eddie, why!?

Jenijena · 01/07/2018 13:12

Joining in the “waaah it’s not fair” movement. I’ve just about given up on Today - I’ve been listening of my own accord since I was 11 (tragic teenager) and frankly the news is so depressing now Eddie has been the bright spark of broadcasting for years.

His and Peston’s podcast series were fantastic and their spark makes me wonder if there will be a leap to ITV?

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2018 13:13

Perfect opening for Jane Garvey.

That was my first thought- why couldn't it be JH leaving?

Very sad news. I sometimes stay at work a bit later to be able to listen on the way home and it's always disappointing when it's not him.

KeithLeMonde · 01/07/2018 13:15

He's a brilliant journalist and presenter. Will be enormously missed.

HollowTalk · 01/07/2018 13:15

I love Eddie Mair. His interviews are fantastic.

ThomasNightingale · 01/07/2018 13:16

Oh no Sad. He’d better be going somewhere I can still listen/watch.

theduchessstill · 01/07/2018 13:16

Noooo, not Jane Garvey on it. I used to like her but she seems a bit smug and knowing now.

bridgetreilly · 01/07/2018 13:17

Agreed with everyone. He's the best thing on R4. I'd love it if he took over the Today programme, but seems like that's not going to happen now.

Ohyesiam · 01/07/2018 13:18

Nooooooooo’ I was just thinking last weeek that he has too many holidays.
I like to start the dinner listening to a bit of pm.
I can echo a pp in wishing they would get rid of John humphries though , he is so thick skinned and lacking.

Weezol · 01/07/2018 13:18

No. Just no. PM is the only news/current affairs programme I like on R4. It's the onky time I ever switch across to R4.

OMFG! just had a thought! There's a vacancy on Question Time - is that now made by an outside production company and bought in like a lot of other stuff?

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2018 13:18

“ I used to like her but she seems a bit smug and knowing now.”

Hmm. AKA a successful woman who takes no shit?

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2018 13:19

Is it because of the row over him needing to take a pay cut?

mysocksmakemeitchy · 01/07/2018 13:19

😭😭😭

Hassled · 01/07/2018 13:19

I'm really disproportionately upset - it feels like he's been part of my life for years. I have so many memories of pottering round the kitchen sorting laundry or food for the evening and listening to Eddie. He just seems like a thoroughly nice man.

theduchessstill · 01/07/2018 13:22

Oooh - I'd love to see him do QT!

Bertrand I love successful women who take no shit, just don't particularly like JG. Don't listen to WH much though, so I may have got an unfair impression based on the bits I do hear on the odd Saturday. I'd love Eddie's replacement to be a woman, though.

nauticant · 01/07/2018 13:26

Oh no! This is a disaster.

I'm worried about how @eddiemairswife will be taking this terrible news.

HollowTalk · 01/07/2018 13:32

I think @eddiemairswife might find Eddie would prefer a husband.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/07/2018 13:37

A mere detail, HollowTalk.

Mark Mardell just played the interview where Eddie called Boris a nasty piece of work to his face. Who else on the BBC would do that?
