Really sad to read this. He's irreplaceable Sad

eddiemairswife · 01/07/2018 15:51

DEVASTATED absolutely DEVASTATED!!!!

Ruffian · 01/07/2018 15:57

Jane Garvey and James O'Brien

Both equally dreadful, egomaniacs who can't stop shoving their opinions in people's faces long enough to listen - the complete opposite of Eddie Mair

SwedishEdith · 01/07/2018 16:02

Won't be James O'Brien. He's already stated he won't do Newsnight any more (so presumably all BBC stuff) because he wants to be free to state his opinions.

AHaAHa · 01/07/2018 16:22

Sorry about the Richard Madely suggestion. Think I was dehydrated.

I'd love to see the back of Humphries and Robinson.

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2018 16:40

“Both equally dreadful, egomaniacs who can't stop shoving their opinions in people's faces long enough to listen - the complete opposite of Eddie Mair”

Because we never have any idea what Eddie Mair thinks about anything, do we? Grin

Gruach · 01/07/2018 16:47

That’s a shame.

Anyone know where he’s going?

Awrite · 01/07/2018 16:48

I love Eddie Mair.

I can't listen to, or watch, John Humphries.

longwayoff · 01/07/2018 16:49

Shame. Oh well never mind well soon find him somewhere else. Jane Garvey pah. O' Brien not at this stage of his career. Dont know. Lots of possibles - how about Danny Dyer? Understand hes taking an interest in politics

fonteynmargot · 01/07/2018 16:53

Ouch that really hurts. I love listening to Eddie on PM. Please not Jane Garvey Sad

Lostinedinburgh · 01/07/2018 16:53

Well that's spoilt my whole day.

reallybadidea · 01/07/2018 16:54

I love it when Jane Garvey interviews someone who comes out with eload of mealy-mouthed rubbish which doesn't answer the question. She doesn't let them get away with it. If more interviewers were like that (and, it pains me to say so, Richard Madeley) then politicians wouldn't be allowed to get away with so much nonsense.

SCOOP: @LBC poised to announce the signing of @eddiemair, barring any last minute changes of plan.

teaandtoast · 01/07/2018 17:01

So he refused to take a pay cut to be on a par with female presenters and so has decided to leave - is that right?

MyFavouritePlace · 01/07/2018 17:06

Surely the female presenters should get a pay raise. Why should the solution be a pay cut?

Hassled · 01/07/2018 17:11

Does anyone remember Feb 29th 2012 when Eddie asked listeners to do something different and special that day and one man planned to get a bus to Swansea - he hadn't left his house for years and it was a massive deal and it felt like all of Radio 4 were willing him on. I started a thread about it at the time - it was fantastic listening and Eddie was just so kind.

longwayoff · 01/07/2018 17:17

O yes lbc please may that be true. But dont get rid of Nick Abbott.

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2018 17:18

Why should he take a pay cut?

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2018 18:02

Social justice, Bertrand? Presumably the budget is fixed so to pay female staff and male staff fairly, men will need to take a pay cut.

Ruffian · 01/07/2018 18:11

Because we never have any idea what Eddie Mair thinks about anything, do we?

It's not about having an opinion it's how you express yourself, allow others to express themselves, it's a certain type of personality and empathy Mair has. O'Brien in particular is driven by a narcissistic craving for attention, I can't stand 5 minutes of him.

Not suprised if Mair is going to LBC, it seems much freer and more diverse there.

longwayoff · 01/07/2018 18:21

Eddie for Question Time? Dimbleby's going. I think he'd be rather good.

lljkk · 01/07/2018 18:52

DH is almost dancing a jig. He loathes EM.

SurferRona · 01/07/2018 19:15

Totally and utterly gutted. Sad. He and only he made me happy to pay the license fee, that Steve Hewlett series was simply extraordinary, amazingly talented journo and beeb at its best. Agree he should have done Today and dropped the increasingly irrelevant JH. So long as doesn't do Skirmish again Grin I will follow him to whatever is next.

GameofPhones · 01/07/2018 19:22

If only John Humphreys would go...

ClaudiaNaughton · 01/07/2018 19:30

Very sad news. I’m sure there’s a story behind it. Maybe passed over for Question Time?
