Irreplaceable.

I like Jane Garvey, but I think Emma Barnett would be even better.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/07/2018 20:12

DH is almost dancing a jig. He loathes EM.

LTB

BernardsBum · 01/07/2018 20:14

Truly gutted. Such a huge loss. Eddie is my radio crush.
Does anyone hear that time he asked the Rosetta probe scientist what it was like to 'Have a probe where the sun doesn't shine?'

iMatter · 01/07/2018 20:16

Gutted. Absolutely gutted.

How about Shaun Ley or Paddy O'Connell as replacements? Similar presenting styles and great to listen to.

HumphreyCobblers · 01/07/2018 20:19

oh dear.

I am extremely sad to hear this. He is great.

I would LOVE Jane Garvey to take over.

AviatorShades · 01/07/2018 20:25

Oh, I remember the Rosetta comment, and also the man getting the bus..
(r.4 and Eddie lover here)can you tell?

Cheered and reassured to read, tho, that he will still be broadcasting.Must check out that new-to-me news channel. Was just concerned cos of his weight loss.Confused but all's well that ends well. Good!

In other news, the creator of Bagpuss died today. Now that really is the end of an era.Sad

impostersyndrome · 01/07/2018 20:26

Sorry for those who are sorry, but I’m delighted to hear this. His self-satisfied smugness at his alleged sense of humour had me running for the off switch as soon as he came on. When they announced the news, I thought it was some tragic news, rather than someone resIgning for a not particularly honourable reason.

viques · 01/07/2018 20:36

why oh why oh why.

The Steve Hewlett interviews for example were such perfect journalism, I can't think of another presenter who could have pulled off such a sympathetic, but not mawkish or mealy mouthed set of interviews that treated Steve with such love, respect and humanity. They used to make me cry.

Any one who used to read the Archers blogs on the BBC will like me smile in memory of the long standing (sorry) saga of Eddie Mair's penis.

Hassled · 01/07/2018 20:44

Conversation with DH earlier:
Me: Eddie Mair is leaving R4 and I'm upset.
DH: Why?
Me: BECAUSE I BLOODY LOVE HIM THAT'S WHY
Awkward pause
DH: I know that. I meant why is he leaving.

topcat2014 · 01/07/2018 20:49

Well, I hope Carolyn Quinn gets the full gig..

Although I will miss EM.

UrsulaPandress · 01/07/2018 21:00

Nooooo

Weezol · 01/07/2018 21:05

Brew for Mr Hassled.

ElspethTascioni · 01/07/2018 21:07

I’m gutted! And I too hate John Humphreys - who probably gets paid about 3 time what EM gets paid. Grrrr...

ElspethTascioni · 01/07/2018 21:09

And Nick Robinson, I HATE Nick Robinson.

busybarbara · 01/07/2018 21:11

Mair is moving to LBC. The hint the Mail are dropping is he doesn’t want his salary scrutinised and that’s something the BBC are deep into lately. So he’ll still be on the air.

Lethaldrizzle · 01/07/2018 21:27

I do like him but slightly lose sympathy if it's because he was asked to take a pay cut to his £350k salary

cariadlet · 01/07/2018 21:45

Another EM fan here. I was really disappointed to hear the news. I've never tried listening to LBC as I've always just thought of it as a station for Londoners. I suppose with digital radio though it's available everywhere.

The BBC website had a couple of funny EM tweets about his resignation but it wouldn't let me copy and paste them.

HopelessWithNumbers · 01/07/2018 22:01

Very sad news. I don’t listen often enough these days.
I absolutely 💖 Paddy O’Connell. Would be interesting to hear him do PM.

busybarbara · 01/07/2018 22:32

I've never tried listening to LBC as I've always just thought of it as a station for Londoners

They went national several years ago, both in terms of content and reception. The LBC tagline was reworked to "Leading Britain's Conversation". Quite a few high profile presenters now and very newsy/politically based shows mostly. It's a good listen, though I listen to TalkRadio more as it's more gossipy, trashy and has mental callers which is more my scene than intelligent debate.

Luscinia · 01/07/2018 22:44

I'm really gutted he is going. He's the best broadcaster around by miles. JH really should go, I'm not a fan of Nick Robinson and I kind of wonder why Martha Kearney moved from WAO, where she was great.

Jane Garvey or Paddy O'Connell for PM.

The BBC are being shifty over the pay gap generally. In most industries, when a disparity is uncovered, the underpaid are given an increase to bring their salary into line with others. The company takes the financial hit, and rightly so.

The BBC want a race to the bottom - cutting the male salary rather than increasing the female, thus salting away the difference for inane projects (W1a) - essentially turning a profit from discrimination.

zen1 · 02/07/2018 00:56

Oh, that’s made me quite Sad. I wonder if he’ll be off to join Robert Peston?
