Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

Well I'm logging out and never logging in again! Thanks for making me upset xx

OP posts:
greendale17 · 27/06/2018 19:40

I would say upper middle class

nocoolnamesleft · 27/06/2018 19:40

Hmm. Not sure. Vulgar boasting class?

KenAdams · 27/06/2018 19:41

You knew what you were doing when you posted this.

Your class is social climber apparently...

You made yourself upset by starting a thread that you know damn well would wind people up!

PeppermintPasty · 27/06/2018 19:42

No idea of your class, but you come across as a bit of a wally.

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2018 19:42

I genuinely don't know what's just happened here.

Why are you upset? Confused

Whatthefoxgoingon · 27/06/2018 19:42

Alright alright guys, we can see that OP was hoping that her bragging about money would have you all leaping up to tag her as upper class, and this has spectacularly backfired. Now you’re just rubbing it in...

BolleauxtoBankers · 27/06/2018 19:42

Monied working class with middle class aspirations.

I am struggling to picture an accent that would have one friend saying 'You're upper class' and another saying 'You're working class.'

Or indeed such friends.

alphajuliet123 · 27/06/2018 19:46

Of course it's not identifying, there are thousands and thousands of people in your exact situation. And people aren't offended by your posts, they're mildly irritated/bemused/amused by your not-so-stealth boasting so they're taking the piss, it's what normal people do. No-one likes a bragger, full stop.

Have a nice cuppa and a biscuit and you'll feel much better, and then stop thinking about it!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/06/2018 19:46

I think if you'd posted in the USA you would have got very different responses, OP.

WizardofToss is right though.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 27/06/2018 19:47

Your DH is a banker, old enough to have teenagers, and he only earns 90K in a good year?

Jesuisleloup · 27/06/2018 19:47

Unemployed ?

yorkshireyummymummy · 27/06/2018 19:48

This thread was only ever going to go one way considering the first comment was a biscuit!!
I feel a bit sorry for the OP if she is genuinely upset but heck- she dug herself a hole and just kept digging.
I don’t even know what she wanted or expected this thread to come up with - surely she must have known the type of answers she would get.!!

brainache78 · 27/06/2018 19:49

I just think it's weird that OP clearly believes herself to be upper middle, so why ask the question? She knows what class she is. She knows her background, education and profession. She knows her cultural capital - and when people are suggesting 'working' or ' lower middle' she is dripfeeding facts about herself, her family and her background to prove it.

You say you are upper middle, OP. You probably are.

As much as I am interested in discussing this archaic and meaningless sense of class that we seem to hold dear in this country, I don't anymore understand the point of the original OP!

mademybed123 · 27/06/2018 19:49

not enough info to judge. How many books in your house? What do you do on the weekend? What paper do you read?

You are on a high street and want a snack, where do you eat?

alphajuliet123 · 27/06/2018 19:49

I think if you'd posted in the USA you would have got very different responses, OP.

Genuinely interested by this post, NMAM18, I know nothing about class in the US. In what way is it different?

RideOn · 27/06/2018 19:49

Quite wealthy middle class

RideOn · 27/06/2018 19:50

If you won the lottery, you would still be the same class!

craxmum · 27/06/2018 19:51

You are on a high street and want a snack, where do you eat?

Please please tell me what the posh answer is! I am fascinated by this class thing. I usually go to pret or eat or similar.

itsbetterthanabox · 27/06/2018 19:52

Middle class.
You didn't say what you do for Work though?
Why is your son wanting to persuade his dad to give away uni fees?
