Why are people so down on fruit these days?

Bursting with vitamins and enzymes and fibre, yet I’m reading more and more on Mumsnet and elsewhere about the insidious dangers of unbridled fruit consumption. A Mumsnetter once wrote that a poster way as well eat a bag of Haribo as juice up a load of fruit.

AIBU to think that a punnet of strawberries is still a pretty good thing to put in your body?

Well juice isn't supposed to be good for you is it? I never understand why people don't just....eat the fruit instead of blitzing it all up and it going all gunky and the blender is a pain in the backside to clean out.

I don't have a sweet tooth so I'm a bit meh about fruit in general.

ErictheGuineaPig · 26/06/2018 23:04

I agree op. If eating fruit is wrong then I don't want to be right. I have a few portions every day.

WTFsMyUserName · 26/06/2018 23:27

Like all things, isn't moderation key? Most fruit is quite acidic and so is likely to cause dental erosion.

sharkirasharkira · 26/06/2018 23:33

Everything has its day eventually as the 'big evil thing that makes people fat'.

First it was fat.
Then it was carbs.
Now it is sugar (and therefore fruit also).

Sooner or later it will be something else. TBH I can't be arsed with the constant stream of messages about what is and isn't supposedly good or bad for you at the this moment. It has been scientifically proven that the human body needs a complex combination of nutrients and a wide variety of different things to stay healthy. Including all the so called 'bad' things. Moderation is the key.

AnnabelleLecter · 26/06/2018 23:38

Yes I have seen fruit described as just water and sugar on here.
What about all the nutrients?
Daft.

TuTru · 26/06/2018 23:42

I love fruit! It’s nature’s candy xx

ginplease8383 · 26/06/2018 23:42

Moderation

Kismett · 26/06/2018 23:43

I don't think people are down on fruit at all. Although I wonder if the poster you mentioned was trying to make a point about whole fruit being better than juice.

KirstenRaymonde · 26/06/2018 23:46

You’re totally right. Nothing wrong with fruit. The fear mongering about sugar is as bad as the fear mongering about fat was. Fruit does have sugar but eaten whole it also had lots of fibre and vitamins, all good things. Even proper juice is fine, but can only count once as a portion of fruit or veg because you consume a lot more sugar before you get full than you would eating whole fruit.
The advice generally is focus more on veg than fruit in your 5 a day though (which should be 8 a day but they agreed 5 was better marketing)

RavenWings · 26/06/2018 23:46

This is MN. If you're not feeding your child activated almonds hand knitted by a virgin under a new moon, you're doing it wrong. Insert head tilt and tinkly laugh (apparently this makes them feel cool?) as appropriate. Fruit is akin to heroin to some people.

stayathomegardener · 26/06/2018 23:48

I think it is interesting that fruit nowadays is bred or genetically modified to be super sweet.

I think there was less of a sugar issue 100 years ago.

Because sugar is portrayed as the root of all evil - and most people are too stupid to understand the difference between the natural sugars in fruit and the refined crap in Haribo.

YoThePussy · 27/06/2018 00:08

YANBU about punnets of strawberries. I will happily scoff all ones no one else wants. Fruit is as a PP has said nature’s candy and is fabulous.

EdWinchester · 27/06/2018 00:10

I am on holiday at mo and am eating a tiny fruit salad (blueberries, banana, pineapple, strawberries) every morning.

It’s the only time all year that I eat fruit. Feels naughty.

Titsywoo · 27/06/2018 00:10

It's great but not for your teeth if you eat too much. My kids started getting cavities when they ate lots of fruit.

2up2manydown · 27/06/2018 00:17

Are you joking EdWinchester?

OP posts:
EdWinchester · 27/06/2018 00:29

No! Not joking. Am endoctrinated in the idea that fruit sugar is bad, thanks to both our dentist and my best friend who is a paediatrician.

There are much better ways to get vitamins and fibre. But I realise fruit in moderation is ok too.

TwoBlueShoes · 27/06/2018 00:29

Because it's full of sugar, Much better to give your child a full sugar coke and Mars bar instead 👍

LeighaJ · 27/06/2018 00:31

No one I know IRL thinks eating fruit is a bad thing, but many like to limit their fruit juice consumption.

RoboJesus · 27/06/2018 00:33

It's because of stupid fear mongering by fad diet companies. Oh no you can't eat a food that's naturally healthy and good for you because buy my product that's why.

Coyoacan · 27/06/2018 00:34

I think it is to encourage people to eat more refined crap

Aus84 · 27/06/2018 00:42

Just follow the servings rule - 2 serves fruit and 5 serves veg a day (more veg if you want). I know a lot of people who don't let their kids have more than 2 serves of fruit a day because of the sugar content but it's still a very important part of your diet in terms of vitamins, fibre etc if eaten whole.

melodybirds · 27/06/2018 00:48

I think it's because fruit used to be akin to vedge but they are different. It's fructose and glucose and simple carbs. Fructose isn't great with weight loss at all if eaten in high doses.

I think years back people on diets used to stuff themself with fruit. I think it's a backlash from that.

lentillover · 27/06/2018 00:53

Where did you paediatrician friend study EdWinchester? Hmm
I need to know which medical school graduates to avoid
