Why are people so down on fruit these days?

Bursting with vitamins and enzymes and fibre, yet I’m reading more and more on Mumsnet and elsewhere about the insidious dangers of unbridled fruit consumption. A Mumsnetter once wrote that a poster way as well eat a bag of Haribo as juice up a load of fruit.

AIBU to think that a punnet of strawberries is still a pretty good thing to put in your body?

Interestingly avoiding fruit for years has contributed to my gum problems as I wasn’t getting enough vitamin c in my diet. Now I eat fruit again and take a high dose vitamin c supplement daily abd my gingivitis is 80/90% better.

PollyPelargonium52 · 27/06/2018 06:30

Since shopping in Aldi each week I love eating fruit. Some cherries, some berries, an avocado (is it fruit?) plus a nice nectarine. Yum yum.

mrbob · 27/06/2018 06:31

It amazes me how many people think children need “treats” a few times a week of dessert/chocolate/biscuits but think 2 oranges will kill them. Most unprocessed food is good for you in reasonable quantities. And several portions a day is reasonable in combination with lots of veggies. Is incredibly good for you. People are obsessed with calcium and protein but actually we barely need any of either and definitely not from animal sources

mum11970 · 27/06/2018 06:31

How about those who mention the effect of fruit on their teeth just brush their teeth after eating it?

Raven88 · 27/06/2018 06:34

I've switched out fruit for vegetables because the sugar content is too high. For me fruit is a treat.

Candyflip · 27/06/2018 06:35

Did you also avoid vegetables sleepfree? Because peppers and broccoli contain more vitamin c than say, oranges. I think you were ok to avoid fruit.

Candyflip · 27/06/2018 06:36

mum many acidic fruits weaken the enamel, so you should not brush teeth straight after.

Vitalogy · 27/06/2018 06:39

I'm waiting for the price of cherries to come down. Tesco were selling a bag for £8 Shock Yes it was a big bag but still Confused

DocTrouble · 27/06/2018 06:43

But surely the teeth/sugar issue is more down to people not brushing their teeth? We were always told something sweet (fruit or dessert) only at the end of the meal, then after you've eaten you brush your teeth. I can see how it would be an issue if you're snacking on it all day long because then the teeth are constantly exposed to the sugars.
I don't buy into all these diets, what's wrong with everything in moderation?

Omgineedanamechange · 27/06/2018 06:44

most people are too stupid to understand the difference between the natural sugars in fruit and the refined crap in Haribo

Would you care to explain the difference? (Hint: there is none.)

This explains it so much better than I can.

RedForFilth · 27/06/2018 06:47

I heard you should eat a piece of cheese after fruit. Or eat fruit before a meal. People are wierd, some love to get on their high horse about anything.

CherryNib · 27/06/2018 06:48

This explains it so much better than I can.

It explains that the sugar is the same. It's merely the method of delivery that is different.

CherryNib · 27/06/2018 06:50

…Both contain glucose and fructose.

PussGirl · 27/06/2018 06:51

Folk are always looking for things to blame for being fat, rather than admitting they just eat too much.

Too much food. Possibly including fruit.

I'm including "snacks" & milky coffees in "food".

haverhill · 27/06/2018 06:53

I remember that documentary, BarbaraofSeville. It was a real eye opener. The very large actress you mentioned is now slim.
Fruit is good for you in moderation. Just rinse your mouth with water or eat a bit of cheese after sugary stuff. I use a toothpaste which claims to protect against acid erosion.

Elasticity · 27/06/2018 06:58

Switch to veg where possible

FishFingerInjury · 27/06/2018 07:06

The process the body takes to convert the sugar in fruit to the sugar in haribo to glucose is very different and I think it is irresponsible that people say it is. The process to convert fruit to glucose and fructose will expend more energy that then energy to convert haribo. Fruit contains fibre along with vitamins and minerals so even more benefits.

To suggest fruit and haribo are directly comparable is ridiculous @cherrynib and this kind of ignorant comment is why people have no idea how to eat well. It really, really isn’t that simplistic

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/06/2018 07:10

I missed that thread math Shock. Giving a kid all fruit to the detriment of other food groups and veg is harmful. Our bodies don’t need fruit in the same way as veg and the other food groups.

I just had a hysterectomy and my body has reset itself and I am intuitive eating. It’s fab. I haven’t been like this for years due to my uterus poisoning me. I craved veg the first few days. Then lots of different coloured fruit yesterday and a protein moment. Idk how long this will last but I’m enjoying it. It’s really unfortunate food is in such bountiful supply that a lot of us have switched this ability off.

Everything should be in moderation. Eggs had a hard time for a few years and were limited until 2/3 years ago. No more than 2/day 3-4x/week. Fruit though should deffo be in moderation. As someone mentioned, it is a lot sweeter and more bountiful than in the past.

Notlivestock · 27/06/2018 07:12

I don't think there's anything wrong with fruit, it has so much goodness in it. But I do think it's a bit of a problem if people are eating fruit for all or most of their 5 a day, as it is much more sugary than most vegetables. But that's no reason to treat it as an evil - along with the sugar there is all the good stuff you mentioned!

Parker231 · 27/06/2018 07:14

Fruit is amazing - i start each day with a big bowl. Today it’s melon, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Fruit is one of the things DC’s are always free to help themselves to whatever they want.

OkMaybeNot · 27/06/2018 07:16

Personally, I think all food is bad for you. I gave it up years ago. I have perfect non-eroded teeth which are clearly visible in my skull, and my skeleton gleams compared to all you flesh-people.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/06/2018 07:19

Cherrynib
All carb is processed into glucose. The more complex the carb the more processing and energy consumption. When consuming complex carb, there are less sugar spikes and the body releases less insulin than with simple sugars. Fructose is far preferable to glucose.

By your reckoning, oats and sweet potato are the same as haribo.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 27/06/2018 07:29

I think it was Gary Taubes who, when referring to the sugars in whole fruit, said "when nature gives you the poison, she also gives you the antidote." So some whole fruit is ok. But people go wrong in thinking that gives them carte blanche to overeat because it's "healthy" e.g my DSS who will literally get through an entire bag of apples daily - he is very overweight and doesn't seem to connect the dots that it's his portion sizes of healthy food that's his main problem.

Caribbeanyesplease · 27/06/2018 07:32

4/5 apples
2 punnets of blueberries
2 punnets of Blackberries
2 punnets of raspberries

Every single day.
I’m very slim. Full of energy. Skin and hair best they’ve ever been (I’m in late thirties) and I honestly can’t recall the last time I had a cold or anything like that. Oh and I have one filling!

Similarly my children have a shocking amount of fruit but look like Boden advert children! Glowing with health and never ever ill (pray and touch wood)

I put largely down to diet
