Why are people so down on fruit these days?

Bursting with vitamins and enzymes and fibre, yet I’m reading more and more on Mumsnet and elsewhere about the insidious dangers of unbridled fruit consumption. A Mumsnetter once wrote that a poster way as well eat a bag of Haribo as juice up a load of fruit.

AIBU to think that a punnet of strawberries is still a pretty good thing to put in your body?

So much overthinking. Fruit has been in n our diet for as long as we've existed. Our bodies know what to do with it and know when to tell us to stop eating it. Just eat it when you want to, and stop when you've had enough! It's that simple. Processed food however is another matter.... mostly it just confuses our bodies and we can't moderate it correctly. So avoid it as much as you possibly can. The end.

Actually it's not quite as simple as that - modern fruit and vegetables have been cultivated and modified to be very different to the ones our ancestors would have eaten. I imagine many people would have had trouble overeating the old-style fruit!

@sarahrellyboo1987

"it’s not even comparable to sweets or candy. Fruit is natural and easily processed sugar and provides huge amounts of vitamins, minerals and fibre.
Sweets...are just pure crap.
You need sugar in your diet to manage your insulin levels and the best kind of sugar is natural. Eg from fruits and veggies.
Vegetables are healthier than fruit, yes. But fruit isn’t junk food.

Get a grip!!"

Arsenic is natural and easily processed, it's still not something we should consume!

You seem to misunderstand how sugar/insulin works. Our bodies release insulin to reduce blood sugars, and insulin reduces our blood sugar level by depositing it into our tissues as fat. Sugar doesn't regulate our insulin levels, insulin balances our blood sugars.

Eat less sugar (even 'naice natural fruit sugar') and your body won't need to release significant insulin. Your pancreas will thank you for it.

I don't need to get a grip, you need to get educated.

Yes aCatsNoHelp, also our ancestors wouldn't have had access to fruit all year round, or in such quantity. Eating fruit when it's in season isn't going to do you any harm, eating (modern super sweet) fruit in significant quantities, all year round, isn't good or how we evolved.

Our ancestors also pickled and fermented vegetables - cabbage, mushrooms, etc. We don't eat half enough of this sort of food, which is very good for gut health. Ditto drinking buttermilk, eating whole, unbleached grains.

My dentist is Greek, and Greeks love their lemons. Acidic fruit is harmful to your teeth, but plenty of fruit is OK. There are much worse foods you can be having.
