My 14 year old needs a new bed.

My 17 year old has a small double bed, I think you call it a queen size or 3/4 bed. It is one of those wooden framed ones which I've actually had for 30 years (obviously several new mattresses in the meantime!).

If I buy my 14 year old the same size bed I will have to get rid of all my single bed bedding.

When the 17 year old leaves home, the 14 year old can have the bigger bed that's fine, and we'll put the single bed in the 17 year old's room.

That's reasonable isn't it?

Buy two singles that you can join together or keep as single.

Mine have been in double beds since they were in junior school.

By join together , the ones that actually fasten, not just pushed together so you slide into the gap

No, I'd buy the same if that's what they want. Nothing builds sibling resentment and poor relationships than the oldest getting everything new/better/bigger and the younger ones having to have all their cast offs or wait. Children should be treated equal.

We got my 15 year old DD a double bed recently. But I kept the decent single duvets and bedding for sleepovers

Yes, perfectly fine!

You can still use the single duvet on a double bed, and the same pillows, so it is only sheets that you need to replace.

I genuinely don't think people need double beds to sleep in. So I wouldn't be getting one just because a teenager wants an upgrade. But since he needs a new bed anyway, I think it's a bit mean to insist he has to have a single.

I’d just get them a double if you can afford it. The 17 year old could end up staying longer then 18.

I bought my ds (age 10) a double, and I'll do the same for dd when she gets to that age. My brother had to wait for other brother to move out before he could have a double and he still talks about it now!

All my DC have a queen/double. I think they do get to a point where it's a bit small.

I think it could easily breed resentment between the children. Donate the old bedding to charity maybe, so it's not going to waste?

Unless you can be certain that the 17 year old is leaving for university in the next year then I'd buy the double.

I would get the 3/4 size or the double. They will have boyfriends or girlfriends maybe when they are home from university holidays. It used to really frustrate me having a single bed once I was home from uni and had a boyfriend. I agree a single duvet could be used for the meantime.

My recommendation is to get double beds as soon as they are out of a cot.
The single bedding will do for uni.

My 7 and 10 year olds have doubles and I’m sure they sleep better in them. Bedding is really reasonably priced online.

Get them a big bed you only need 2 new sets of bedding (assuming the eldest child has only 2 otherwise you might not even need that many).
It’s mean to force them to have a small bed of you can afford the bigger and there is space.

You decide. It's your house and you're the parent. Single bed is fine for anyone imo.

Actually lots of Uni accommodation has those small size doubles now. (Not necessarily halls, but rented houses). I had to buy quite a few fitted sheets in that size for my lot.

No, that's really unfair. They should both have the same. When I lived in my parents my brother and I both had a single, then he broke his and it was replaced with a double. Really shitty because he's 5 years younger than me We were 8 and 13 at the time. I was stuck with a single bed until I moved out at about 19 while he had a double.
