to not buy teen a double bed?

My 14 year old needs a new bed.

My 17 year old has a small double bed, I think you call it a queen size or 3/4 bed. It is one of those wooden framed ones which I've actually had for 30 years (obviously several new mattresses in the meantime!).

If I buy my 14 year old the same size bed I will have to get rid of all my single bed bedding.

When the 17 year old leaves home, the 14 year old can have the bigger bed that's fine, and we'll put the single bed in the 17 year old's room.

That's reasonable isn't it?

Why does any single person need a double?
If you have the room for it then it is more versatile as it can accommodate two people. Useful if you have family or friends stay, to be able to share with a child when they need comfort and so on.

I am a single parent and I have a double. My 12 year old has a single because he decided he would prefer the floor space.

Actually lots of Uni accommodation has those small size doubles now.

Blimey, things have changed. I suppose they don't have the rock hard prison mattresses these days either? Me and my bf shared a small single between us for 3 years!

My kids will both be extremely tall, going by their father's height. He struggles even sleeping diagonally in a double to fit his legs in, no doubt my kids will be the same. But they're not having double beds as I just don't have the space - they'll have to squeeze into their single bunk bed til they leave home (can you even buy bunk beds with a double top and bottom?). Starting to feel like they are really deprived reading this thread though! I never had a double at home and nor did any of my friends when we were teenagers.

Whether you managed as a teenager yourself in a single doesn't matter. A single bed is adequate, even 6'4" DS managed in his first year of halls in a single. As long as there isn't a footboard and you can overhang.
I think what people are saying is if you have the space then a double is simply nicer.
I grew up in dire poverty. Doesn't mean I make my DC have the same standard of living just because I did. I have plenty of room and we all have double or KS beds.
My early comment about going straight from cot to double bed was based on economy and hindsight. I bought DC single beds, then high risers, then doubles. Going straight to doubles would have been better for lots of reasons (not least nocturnal bed hopping with small children).

can you even buy bunk beds with a double top and bottom

Yes. Where I live you can.

LoveInTokyo · 24/06/2018 14:51

^OP.- "AIBU"
The entire MN - "Yes, buy a double"
OP "nah"^

This.

OP has clearly gone off in a huff because she started this thread expecting everyone to say “OMG OP, you are SO right.”

I am a single parent and I have a double

Oh it's different for adults as you probably want to hook up with men unless you're too old. I meant kids who shouldn't be sleeping around

GreenTulips · 24/06/2018 16:19

Sleeping in a double bed as a teen does not equal 'sleeping around'

why would you make that leap??

Iceweasel · 24/06/2018 16:33

My 12 year old will probably bring home a girlfriend or boyfriend before I 'hook up' with men with my child in the house. I only get the house to myself if he is on camp.

pointythings · 24/06/2018 16:47

busybarbara well I was kind of waiting for the 'if you buy your teens a double, you are encouraging them to be promiscuous'.

My response to you is Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Kit10 · 24/06/2018 16:52

At 14 I'd let her pick. Saying no just because of sheets is unreasonable. I got a double bed at 15 and I felt so grown up, it's lovely as a teenager to sprawl across your bed and listen to music, have friends over etc. I haven't had a single bed since, I slept on one in a hotel last year and felt like a child, not as comfortable in my opinion!

Xenia · 24/06/2018 16:53

Just about all of us are in single beds here. People must have a lot of space if everyone is in double beds and why do you need all that space?

OnionBridie · 24/06/2018 17:10

why would you make that leap??

For the same reason they said a double bed is ok for an adult if you want to hook up with men.

They wanted noticed.

Fluffyunicorns · 24/06/2018 17:18

If the older one does go to uni they will need to feel welcome to come home for the holidays - mine would have been really upset if his room stopped being his the second he moved out - he loves his bed

Newsofas · 24/06/2018 17:26

My kids bedrooms are too small for double beds.

cardibach · 24/06/2018 18:17

Well don’t buy them then, newsofas It seems the OP’s DC’s bedroom is big enough given that, buying ones seems the best bet for lots of reasons.
busybarbara I don’t know where to start with this: Oh it's different for adults as you probably want to hook up with men unless you're too old
What age is too old for sex? Also should I therefore sleep in a single because I’m not interested in hooking up with men (or women) for non-age related reasons?

Sleepless123456789 · 24/06/2018 18:53

If you do go for a double, could you send the singles sheets of with 17yr old when they leave?
