To buy some nets

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:00

So, my vertical blinds in my living room have seen better days and need replacing. AIBU to be considering getting some nets?!

I think they are quite pretty and money being tight they are the cheaper option to cover my two large windows.

What do you think? Will I be made a laughing stock of in our street Grin

Personally I hate them, they need regular washing or they discolour and look rank, however I get that they can look ok and most people are much better at housework than I am.

Bluelady · 07/06/2018 17:05

Much as I detest them, we have no choice in our downstairs windows (security conscious/paranoid husband). Go as plain as you possibly can and console yourself that they're not as bad as vertical blinds.

FoofFighter · 07/06/2018 17:08

I have very plain nets, sheer with no fuss and a band at the bottom that's a little thicker. I love nets and can't understand the hatred for them 🙁 I miss my nets of the 90s, proper lacy frilly ones but they'd look out of place now. Nobody in Scotland seem to have nets just those awful vertical office blinds yuck

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:08

I would definitely wash them regularly to keep them white, discoloured/brown nets are rank.

Are vertical blinds not fashionable now @Bluelady ?! Blush

I'm considering buying some too so your not alone in this dreadful mistake we're about to make.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:09

That's what I was thinking @FoofFighter plain ones would be the better option and perhaps not look as dated as the lacy ones

I hate nets and blinds. What I need is a massive front garden with a hedge at the bottom.

Instead I put up with the occasional passer by looking in. Ho hum. Better than permenant horrible nets!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:10

@SluttyButty I've made worse mistakes to be fair Grin

I'm not a fan, but you could probably pick up a set very cheaply from Ebay.
Otherwise, if it's overlooking that's bothering you, window film is a good but cheap option.

MrsEricBana · 07/06/2018 17:10

I have the solution...get a plain one and call it a voile. Sorted.

MrsEricBana · 07/06/2018 17:11

That's what I did anyway 😂

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:12

@MrsEricBana a voile does sound posher than nets...Good idea Grin

Nooooo!

Get some privacy film, or shutters

Vertical blinds are bad but nets are worse

Bluelady · 07/06/2018 17:15

No idea if vertical blinds are fashionable, I just think they only belong in offices. I call mine voiles too. 😊

Nesssie · 07/06/2018 17:16

I have net curtains and I thought they were pretty Blush Cant stand the idea of someone being able to look in, and I like to leave the curtains open for as long as possible for the natural light.
But they definitely aren’t yellow and they have a pretty pattern.

TillyTheTiger · 07/06/2018 17:17

We just got totally plain very white voiles and they look better than the nets we had before, which were hideous. There didn't seem to be any other affordable option

BankWadger · 07/06/2018 17:19

I have nets. Bought the cheapest one JL do, so they're nice and plain.

No annoying clanking when the windows are open and allow plenty of air through. I can see out without being looked in at.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:20

Well I think I'm sold, majority seems to like them so I'll get some plain nets voiles.

Thanks MN Grin

I tried the window film, some premium job guaranteed not to bubble or peel... it bubbled and peeled so I ripped it off in disgust and binned it Grin

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/06/2018 17:22

Not keen on the window film, doesn't feel very cosy

I've always hated vertical blinds, as a pp says, they look too office-y. I also don't understand people who hate nets or voiles, but complain about people staring in to their homes!

As said, they don't have to be frilly and old fashioned, there are some really nice nets and voiles available. They also diffuse the light coming in through the windows, giving a softer look. I've been thinking of getting some for our living room, for that very reason (we live rurally, so don't need them for privacy).

bilbodog · 07/06/2018 17:27

Sorry but i cant stand nets - like looking out through fog!! I want as much light as possible coming through my windows.

Arse, I've just looked at the cost at made to measure ones for my windows and tension rods, £60 for two windows... For net curtains ffs 😳
