Camping Ettiquette

I’m camping this weekend, two tents, two children, two dogs.

This is the first time we’ve each brought our dogs and searched for a long time and through lots of reviews until we found this place... spoke to the owner who said he only takes a certain amount of bookings to make sure you’re all a bit seperate and no one bothers anyone else.

Last night it was amazing... it’s almost like you’re camping totally alone. I can see a group of tents in the distance and the top of another through the trees but it does feel very secluded.

When we arrived the owner was at the gate and told us to drive and find an empty space. I assume he says this to everyone..

Today a new family arrive, and park and pitch up right next to us. And I mean Right next to us. Some of their ropes even cross over with my friends tent. Their table and chairs are right in the siteline of ours, I can even hear their drink open!

To make it worse, their kids seem terrified of dogs. Our dogs aren’t on leads and have been running around ‘our camp’ really happy. Now we’ve had to get the crate out.

AIBU? I’m kind of pissed off. I wish I’d brought hungry hippos or some really loud scream inducing game but unfortunately playing cards and magiclip dolls are all I have..!

How are things on the western front? Did the wood man put in an appearance?

Scrowy · 02/06/2018 23:36

More pertinently, how pissed are you OP?

Slimtimeagain · 02/06/2018 23:40

That tent is amazing!!! So jealous. Where is it from?

MyKingdomForBrie · 02/06/2018 23:51

That’s just so out of order! They’re clearly nuts.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/06/2018 23:55

It’s a 6m bell tent from boutique bell tents... I love it.

Not that pissed actually! Happily tipsy ;)

CantankerousCamel thanks, I've promised my daughter a tent.

Jux · 03/06/2018 00:30

Thank you MaryPoppins, I like a bit of Tent Porn from time to time Grin

BigPinkBall · 03/06/2018 00:31

This same thing almost happened to me, empty field and two youngish lads pull up and start getting their stuff out of the car, so I went straight over and said “look you can pitch up here if you want but I’ve got a 1 year old in my tent” they both looked at me blankly so I said “I can’t guarantee she won’t cry at night, it might disturb you” and one lad was straight back in the car, the other spent a couple of minutes trying to persuade him to stay and they eventually drove off to the other side of the field.

Seriously, why do they have to be so close? it’s weird! Like the people who park next to you in an empty car park then have to squeeze out of their car door because they’re so close.

CantankerousCamel · 03/06/2018 02:50

We have a lowly 4m, it’s been perfect til now (we’ve outgrown it) so getting a van for half of us to sleep in.

We have the tea light chandelier too which warms it slightly and gives the best light

MyOtherProfile · 03/06/2018 03:08

I would have to ask them why they pitched so close. Maybe they're all afraid of the dark and feel a little bit safer for being RIGHT NEXT TO YOU?!

why go camping then

PeachesPlumsPears · 03/06/2018 03:49

They’re totally not the people to argue with... after conexisting with them all day I’m super glad I didn’t confront them

I would definitely let the dogs out then just in case they get aggressive.

Jaxinthebox · 03/06/2018 06:12

I have read this thread and laughed and been incensed on your behalf! What CFery this is. Did the log man come round?

cornishmumtobe · 03/06/2018 07:42

OPPPPPP where are you? How was your night?

Are you up yet? Making peace over some sizzling sausages??

Fruitbat1980 · 03/06/2018 08:09

Firstly god you’ve made me tent broody, I so miss camping, I’ve woken DH to tell him we’re buying a tent!
Secondly, you MUST read “the tent, the bucket and me” it’s hands down the most hilarious book I’ve ever read (think crying so hard with laughter you can’t see the words on the page) and makes me so nostalgic for camping!
Thirdly - what CF. How long are you there for? Defo let their tent down when they go out.

frumpety · 03/06/2018 08:16

How did last night go OP ?

MakeTheManSomeFuckingEggs · 03/06/2018 08:19

That's awfully close! What are they thinking???

Bowerbird5 · 03/06/2018 09:02

How was last night? I can't believe they camped so close. Also think that must be their usual pitch otherwise why would they?

I would be tempted to continually trip over their guy ropes. Use a stick. Especially in the night. Loud swearing would be allowed too.
Did you come back and find them there? Otherwise even polite me would have to ask why they were camping so close when they had so much space. Even on busy sites we've had more space. I'm going in July, view over lake😄

Bunchofdaffodils · 03/06/2018 09:13

What a precious thread, love it. I agree they probably thought they would get the kids off their hands by playing with yours. Weirdos.
Gonna plan a trip with my friend and her children. Especially loved the pretty bunting garott idea 😉.

LEMtheoriginal · 03/06/2018 09:21

What puzzles me is this - there are sites in which you can actually have that much space??

I ask because i love camping but the only thing I cannot bear are people camped right next to us. We have only gone to places with allocated plots and space has been a premium or lined up in rows (awful). I have always worried about pitch where you like for the simple reason that this scenario may occur.

Any recommendations for sites that have enough space to pitch up away from the madding crowds much appreciated.

As lovely as the OP sounds I would pitch as far away as possible - especially if I spotted the cards against humanity on the camping table Grin that game elicits far too much hilarity!! But seriously - nothing worse than being next to groups because we feel like Billy no mates encroaching on their fun.

TheBrilloPad · 03/06/2018 09:23

@LEMtheoriginal We have camped at the White Horse campsite in Weymouth a few times, and always had a whole field of space. It's a working farm and only open for camping for a specified number of weeks a year, always had that "can only see the vague lights from other tents at night" feeling - it's bliss.

NameChangingParanoid · 03/06/2018 09:28

Am I the only one googling bell tents this morning?!

LEMtheoriginal · 03/06/2018 09:46

Thanks brillo - might have to look tgat one up!

LibertyGables · 03/06/2018 09:48

Am I the only one googling bell tents this morning?!

No you’re not. I’ve been eyeing them up since dawn. Also bunting. And fairy lights. Wild camping. Sleeping bags. It’s not 10am yet and I’ve already basically been on a fantasy camping holiday.

Butttons · 03/06/2018 10:01

What happened OP?

And please let us know what site you're on - it looks amazing! I promise to abide by the 6m rule
