Camping Ettiquette

I’m camping this weekend, two tents, two children, two dogs.

This is the first time we’ve each brought our dogs and searched for a long time and through lots of reviews until we found this place... spoke to the owner who said he only takes a certain amount of bookings to make sure you’re all a bit seperate and no one bothers anyone else.

Last night it was amazing... it’s almost like you’re camping totally alone. I can see a group of tents in the distance and the top of another through the trees but it does feel very secluded.

When we arrived the owner was at the gate and told us to drive and find an empty space. I assume he says this to everyone..

Today a new family arrive, and park and pitch up right next to us. And I mean Right next to us. Some of their ropes even cross over with my friends tent. Their table and chairs are right in the siteline of ours, I can even hear their drink open!

To make it worse, their kids seem terrified of dogs. Our dogs aren’t on leads and have been running around ‘our camp’ really happy. Now we’ve had to get the crate out.

AIBU? I’m kind of pissed off. I wish I’d brought hungry hippos or some really loud scream inducing game but unfortunately playing cards and magiclip dolls are all I have..!

I've stayed at Ponsandane too I think, the one with the peacock? We didn't take a dog but there were a couple there. Perfect for the beach and the jubilee pool.

sherryberry79 · 03/06/2018 18:02

They’d regret pitching up so close to me once they heard my pneumatic snoring (muah hahahaha)!

Beckadillo · 03/06/2018 18:11

Slightly off topic, but just had to say that I’ve stayed at NettleTea’s site too, and can honestly say it was my favourite ever camping experience. A magic place, and LOADS of space. Was thinking of it fondly over half-term, as we were munched to bits by mosquitoes in Holland. Don’t know how she does it but we hardly saw a single mosquito, slug, or other camper the whole time we were there....

Jaxhog · 03/06/2018 18:29

You've definitely camped in 'their spot'. Either that or they are seriously weird people. But you got there first and were allowed to camp there, so it is their problem.

Carry on as if they weren't there. Don't crate the dogs unless you want to e.g. to cool them down etc. And if your dog tries to play football with their kids. Tell them to move the game if they don't like it.

Camping etiquette is that you don't camp any nearer to a stranger than you have to. Which they did.

marjorie25 · 03/06/2018 18:30

arethereanyleftatall :

It's like you sitting on the bus/tube and there are a lot of seats around and this person comes and sit right next to you.
It totally pisses me off. Not sure why people do that.
I would want my privacy.
I would leave the dogs to roam and if they say anything, just let them know you were there first and there are lots of room for them to move too.

GerdaLovesLili · 03/06/2018 18:40

Even in a camping field only occupied by other people that I know (some of them for over 20 years), there because we all share a hobby I wouldn't pitch my tent that close.

How rude.

Atthebottomofthegarden · 03/06/2018 18:43

Any update OP?

MiddleClassProblem · 03/06/2018 18:47

MPP can’t brlieved I’ve missed this thread. Your tent is amazing! The “pods” are proper fancy. How small does it fold down?

How are they today?

Shantotto · 03/06/2018 19:05

@alphajuliet123 Yes, the peacock! Loved that wandering around the place.

I'm desperate to go back, but I got pregnant with almost 3yr old DC after and we haven't camped since. And still no car - DP thinks I'm insane to attempt the train with him to entertain for 5 hours never mind lugging the stuff and a buggy this time!

Ewock · 03/06/2018 19:13

I've probably missed the pp who said about it, butbwhere is the Nettle Tea camping site? Sorry op to invade your thread.

AnneProtheroe · 03/06/2018 19:14

I find it odd that the site owner hasn't been around yet. Every site we've camped at, the site owner has come around regularly to keep an eye out for any issues, such as this.

ToftyAC · 03/06/2018 19:20

Some people just don’t understand the concept of personal space x(

Yorkshiretolondon · 03/06/2018 19:28

I just don’t know why people love to crowd...it seems to happen a lot in car parks... empty car park, new arrival parks so close their door bangs my car when opened! Why? I don’t get it and would be p’ed off.... I’d move tent you probably don’t need to take it down fully to move it.. how long have you got left?

Orchidflower1 · 03/06/2018 19:35

Really think the owner/ woodman should have been back to check up by now but more importantly where is op? Do you think she’s finally lost her cool and fed the space invaders to her dogs?! Have the space invaders turned nasty and turfed op off “ their space”.
Is the Sussex posse still around? They might need to saddle up and investigate?! I’ve followed this from the beginning - I NEED TO KNOW!!!

flowergrrl77 · 03/06/2018 19:38

You’ve reminded me that I was looking into getting an emporer bell tent! Thanks! Did they move or leave yet? How long are you staying? I’m in Sussex too :) no dogs, but I appear to have alarm bell birds keeping everyone up living in my garden trees right now! 😂

firehousedog · 03/06/2018 19:41

You ANBU. Why would you pitch up next to a family with dogs if your children don't like them?

caringcarer · 03/06/2018 19:46

They should not have pitched up next to dogs if they don't like dogs. Bloody ridiculous people. Do not crate your dogs or else they will think they are being punished and they have not done anything bad.

Lou222 · 03/06/2018 19:53

Desperate for an update!

samanthasung · 03/06/2018 20:02

Yes that is unfair on the dogs i agree. Seems bizarre why anyone would place their children near dogs if they know they are affraid of dogs. A bit like people who move next to a pub then complain about noise.

marjorie25 · 03/06/2018 20:17

category12:

She was there first.
I would not have crated the dog and I bet they would have moved already.
They are the bullies and should be taught a lesson - something they have no learnt from life.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/06/2018 20:22

Guy ropes should never cross. It's a fire risk.

Tell the site owner and ask him to deal with it/

CommanderShepard · 03/06/2018 20:26

Agree. Don't crate the dogs. And let us know what happened!

Rachie1986 · 03/06/2018 20:54

How was the night OP?

cornishmumtobe · 03/06/2018 20:55

YABU - for not updating us!

aliceinwonderlandbrum · 03/06/2018 21:06
