Camping Ettiquette

I’m camping this weekend, two tents, two children, two dogs.

This is the first time we’ve each brought our dogs and searched for a long time and through lots of reviews until we found this place... spoke to the owner who said he only takes a certain amount of bookings to make sure you’re all a bit seperate and no one bothers anyone else.

Last night it was amazing... it’s almost like you’re camping totally alone. I can see a group of tents in the distance and the top of another through the trees but it does feel very secluded.

When we arrived the owner was at the gate and told us to drive and find an empty space. I assume he says this to everyone..

Today a new family arrive, and park and pitch up right next to us. And I mean Right next to us. Some of their ropes even cross over with my friends tent. Their table and chairs are right in the siteline of ours, I can even hear their drink open!

To make it worse, their kids seem terrified of dogs. Our dogs aren’t on leads and have been running around ‘our camp’ really happy. Now we’ve had to get the crate out.

AIBU? I’m kind of pissed off. I wish I’d brought hungry hippos or some really loud scream inducing game but unfortunately playing cards and magiclip dolls are all I have..!

NOOOOOO I need to know what's happened!! Perhaps the OP and co have made pals with the campers from hell and they are all drinking vodka martinis together!

AlpacaLypse · 03/06/2018 21:26

I've camped at NettleTea's site too. Cant think of any good reason for anyone to be within 50 yards of anyone else.

meercat23 · 03/06/2018 21:57

If the OP is on a campsite without electricity she may not have battery charge to update with. We might have to wait

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 03/06/2018 22:21

Sorry, had a really busy day. Packed up and left at midday, travelled home, had a work presentation to sort.. school stuff... washing... camping stuff away etc!

So... I had a pretty late night so slept in with my DD till 9. When we came out they were gone!

My friend usually gets up just before six to take the dog for a run and hadn’t unset the alarm... the dog woke my friend up slightly earlier and they went off for a run... forgetting the phone in the tent and the alarm going off at 5.50am right next to the wall closest to the neighbours tent... oops!

When they got back the neighbours looked super pissed off, packed up and left.

I’m sorry my lie in made me miss it!

That worked out well then.

They'll still be talking about the noisy people with the unruly dogs and the middle of the night alarm call this time next year and they will be as far away as they can get from any other tent in the field, if they ever go camping again.

BettyPitts · 03/06/2018 22:47

Photo!

BettyPitts · 03/06/2018 23:04

Wrong thread, ignore that

MyOtherProfile · 03/06/2018 23:07

So the neighbours were annoyed by the alarm and noise from the people rhey camped RIGHT UP AGAINST in an otherwise empty field? Brilliant!

ScrubTheDecks · 03/06/2018 23:37

Ewock (I hope it’s all right to say this; I must have originally found this on MN myself) NettleTea’s site is Glottenham Camping. There is the ‘Glamping’ business and also a camping field for tent bookings.

Alpacalypse The OP isn’t at NettleTea’s site !

Athena18 · 03/06/2018 23:49

Sympathies. Don’t understand why people pitch up on top of your tent. Am a frequent camper and fortunately most sites have been great. Last year we were prevented from erecting tent by campers on adjacent pitch who had unloaded on our designated site while they erected their tent. Made a polite enquiry as to whether they would be long. They begrudgingly began moving their stuff. Meanwhile another family arrived on the other side of our pitch, parked their car in what would have been our designated space and began unloading. When I pointed this out they said they wouldn’t be long. I had to to complain forcibly to get them to shift. That night our neighbours had a bit of a party. When it was still noisy at 11.30 my beloved went over to ask if the noise could be kept down and was told to go forth and multiply - in so many words. We rang the manager the tent was gone by the following morning. On the matter of dogs, majority of sites insist that dogs be kept on a lead. They can be a bit of a nuisance if children are not used to dogs. One of our camper neighbours made a point of taking his dog on a lead on a visiting round to the nearest tents so as to introduce her to everyone. The dog of course became adopted by everyone and there was no problem. Worth doing.

Glad you got home safely OP- maybe it was for the best that the cf space invaders did a dawn flit!

Ewock · 04/06/2018 08:32

Thanks scrubthedecks I will have a look. Would have been funny to see their faces op, glad you were able tohave a great time even with them being so annoying.

BorchesterTowers · 04/06/2018 08:43

Karma exists! Grin

NettleTea · 04/06/2018 08:44

No, she isnt at our place - we dont open for camping til August. We have someone living onsite during the camping time, she camps along with everyone else so is on hand to sort out these sorts of issues.
and thanks to the people who said they'd stayed with us xxxx

2ManyChoices · 04/06/2018 09:15

If, from your description Marypoppinspenguins I've guessed where you are, then there's a 6 meter rule, get the security bloke out.

AlpacaLypse · 04/06/2018 09:57

@ScrubTheDecks I know it wasn't @NettleTea 's site, but it had been talked about upthread. Reading back I can see why you thought I was referring to it though.

MaggieWaggie41 · 04/06/2018 10:53

Ha, ha

Tootsiemcgraw · 04/06/2018 14:45

Phew! That’s was pretty in-tents 😅

happypoobum · 04/06/2018 15:34

Yeah, I am so glad the OP canvassed our opinion Smile

Addy2 · 04/06/2018 15:51

I wonder if they're also fans of parking right next to someone else's car in an empty car park.

LakieLady · 04/06/2018 16:29

Really cackling at the the thought of the CF campers being woken early because they'd pitched so close to your friends, OP! That's karma, that is. Grin

I'd love to stay at your place, NettleTea, but from what I can see, it doesn't look as though you accept motorhomes. Sad

Ours is pretty small by MH standards, no longer than a big car really.
And we're very quiet, and scrupulous observers of camping etiquette.

I've just realised that I've been a regular camper for 56 years.

Nairobiblue · 04/06/2018 20:14

Fruitbat - I went and bought the book and cannot stop laughing - it is very funny. My sons and dogs are looking at me as tears pour out my eyes!! Thanks for the recommendation. xx

alphajuliet123 · 04/06/2018 22:29

Another vote for The Tent, The Bucket & Me. Loved it, so funny and true, my husband enjoyed it too (unusual, he's more of a non-fiction fan)

Jux · 04/06/2018 22:37

We used to camp at Little Roadway Farm in Devon, and also Hillend in the Gower. Both were just fields where you pitched wherever and both were fab. I think they've both become much larger over 20 years, with more amenities and the last time I went were more popular and populated. Still lots of room, and still no marked pitches, but we've been to neither for 5years+ so no idea what they're like now.

Better showers in both though!

siwel123 · 04/06/2018 23:18

@NettleTea. I've found your site on the internet but it seems your website isn't working?
