Dirty gumtree seller. Manners?

Spend £30 on a bundle of kids clothes.
Advert said as new , clean , fresh, smoke free all top brands like Gap etc.

Collected, given in zipped laundry bags. Lots there I thought, and it was that awkward doorstep moment where I didn’t want to put the bags down and rake through.. lesson learned.

It’s all gross and none salvageable. It all smells of fags really bad, there’s b.o smells and dirty brown marks all over some, no brand names, ripped jeans on the knees, dog hair and it smells like it’s been lying around unwashed a long time.
It’s all very very worn and bobbly and no where near new. I feel quite upset. And stupid for not checking it out first. She sounded so lovely though and told me a lot of lies.

Whenever I sell anything, it’s washed and fresh and in good condition. I would be absolutely MORTIFIED to sell otherwise.. I wipe everything over if it’s toys or furniture I sell too. Is that not the done thing?
AIBU to expect washed clothes that fit the description?

I should have checked . Too trusting I know ☹️

Do you think she could’ve got the bags mixed up? One for chucking out one for the charity shipnan done for selling, maybe she just lifted the wrong bag?
Message her and ask if there’s been a mistake, if not then chalk it up to experience

causeimunderyourspell · 29/05/2018 21:24

You know where she lives - go back there and say 'uh I don't think so love, money back please!!'

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:28

It’s definately the right bag it has some of the things she listed. It was quite a drive. I’m not wasting the petrol going back to possibly be told to bugger off.
Just didn’t think people would have the nerve.
It’s just gross. And a waste of money I didn’t really have

Sounds disgusting. This is one reason why I don't buy second hand certain things as it's always awkward inspecting things unless it's visible without having to inspect it to much.

CrackersDontMatter · 29/05/2018 21:31

I once had the same. Plus there were also two saturated nappies in there. Grim.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:32

I couldn’t do that to someone. It could end up being someone you know that buys it

Louiselouie0890 · 29/05/2018 21:33

Yabu for not going back

Fruitcorner123 · 29/05/2018 21:37

I couldn’t do that to someone. It could end up being someone you know that buys it

Or someone on the breadline who is spending the last money they have to clothe their baby or money that was a gift because they can't afford clothes. Its a horrible thing to do.

I would at least contact her and ask for your money back. I dont know gumtree but isn't there a customer service? She needs to be reported so she doesn't do this again. Presumably she can be discredited as seller?

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:37

I don’t have the money to waste on petrol when there is no guarantee they will give me my money back?

OP posts:
Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:40

Fruit corner I was just trying to kit my kid out in some decent stuff that I can’t afford and it backfired. I think it’s sold as seen. I will look in to reporting seller but I am sure itl be my own fault for not checking.

OP posts:
Butterflykissess · 29/05/2018 21:43

No gumtree won't be interested. I know someone who sold a puppy on there (not gonna get into the rights and wrongs of that as this was a relative and nothing to do with me) and was given counterfeit money. Gumtree wasn't interested nor were the police.

Cellardoor23 · 29/05/2018 21:50

Can you contact the seller by email? If that fails, can you leave a review? That's horrible. I've sold a few things on ebay/fb selling pages, and I would never sell something without writing an honest review of what condition it's in. I would be embarrassed.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:51

That’s awful butterfly. There must be so many dodgy characters out there. You live and learn I suppose. Glad my son didn’t know of it would have been a disappointment.
If I had been brave enough on doorstep to open the bag and hold it up can you imagine how awkward that would be for her? Why put yourself in that position.
And poor kid that obviously goes about smelling of fags.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:52

Cellar I’m not sure that you can rate. I could email her back and say I’m disappointed but I assume she isn’t going to offer to return my money.
I could have got a couple of outfits in primark instead.

She stuffed the money into her bag and didn't even count it or look at it till after they had gon e. It was so clearly fake aswell. She got the dog back (long story!) I think people rely on the people not checking. I had a man give me an old £5 note although not such a big deal I just didn't register at the time. Just alway s check in future.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 21:58

I was going to say I hope he dog was ok but didn’t like to ask. I’m glad she got it back.

SneakyGremlins · 29/05/2018 21:59

And you're absolutely certain you can't get them clean? Sad Poor you OP.

TheBigFatMermaid · 29/05/2018 22:01

I know it's too late now, but now you know people have the brass neck to sell you shit, you need to get a bit more hard about it and check!

Ohyesiam · 29/05/2018 22:03

Gumtree seems really unmoderated. you can buy any illegal drug on itShock

tiredbutFuckIt · 29/05/2018 22:05

I’ve had this but with charity donations, so never met the people donating. But similar thing, damp/musty bobbly damaged kids stuff covered in pet hair. It annoyed me at first (poor kids with nothing should be thankful that?) then I had to just imagine the people were a bit dim, like this was their normal standard that they think is ok

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 22:10

I wondered about her normal standard. She said nearly new and great condition. Either that’s her idea of great or she was at it

OP posts:
LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 29/05/2018 22:10

Message her and tell her they are filth I honestly think some people are blinkered when they sell things I'd be mortified! But if they are as bad as you set which is horrendous then you are daft not to say anything.

AJPTaylor · 29/05/2018 22:13

Yes. The world is sadly full of cheeky fucker scammers. Esp on gumtree.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 22:16

Lola I can email her all angry but what will it achieve? I can’t see me getting my money back which is what I would want .
The unripped stuff that wasn’t stained still was well worn and smelled like it had been pulled out a dirty washing basket? The cuffs of a grey zippy for example were all brown like it had been worn for quite a while and stunk of must

OP posts:
SneakyGremlins · 29/05/2018 22:18

Throw them on a ninety?
