Dirty gumtree seller. Manners?

Spend £30 on a bundle of kids clothes.
Advert said as new , clean , fresh, smoke free all top brands like Gap etc.

Collected, given in zipped laundry bags. Lots there I thought, and it was that awkward doorstep moment where I didn’t want to put the bags down and rake through.. lesson learned.

It’s all gross and none salvageable. It all smells of fags really bad, there’s b.o smells and dirty brown marks all over some, no brand names, ripped jeans on the knees, dog hair and it smells like it’s been lying around unwashed a long time.
It’s all very very worn and bobbly and no where near new. I feel quite upset. And stupid for not checking it out first. She sounded so lovely though and told me a lot of lies.

Whenever I sell anything, it’s washed and fresh and in good condition. I would be absolutely MORTIFIED to sell otherwise.. I wipe everything over if it’s toys or furniture I sell too. Is that not the done thing?
AIBU to expect washed clothes that fit the description?

I should have checked . Too trusting I know ☹️

It is really not nice what she did, I think you should have at least opened the bags before you handed over the money... anything could have been in those bags.

colditz · 29/05/2018 22:24

Chuck everything through a really hot wash and see in anything can be salvaged.

But YANBU, what a horrible thing to do, just chucking dirty clothes in a bag

MsMotherOfDragons · 29/05/2018 22:24

Take pictures of the clothes before washing or throwing away, in case you change your mind and want to contact the seller for a refund or discount.

RitaMills · 29/05/2018 22:32

You’re obviously not going to get your money back but I’d have to email her anyway just to tell her what a smelly, dirty rip off merchant she is. Even if she was too brass necked to be shamed by it I’d probably feel a tad better getting it off my chest.

KarmaStar · 29/05/2018 22:37

Ring her up OP and say you will meet her half way at such and such a location at ? O'clock and if she doesn't turn up with your cash you will be going to take the matter further legally.

mothertruck3r · 29/05/2018 22:40

Butterfly - You can still exchange old notes that are no longer in circulation, just take them to a bank and they will exchange them or if they refuse you can go to the Bank of England and exchange them there.

19lottie82 · 29/05/2018 22:44

you will be going to take the matter further
legally.

Hmm

How do you suggest the OP does that exactly?

Ridiculous suggestion, the seller will laugh in her face.

Notso · 29/05/2018 22:53

I don't know how people can be so manky. I bought a footmuff once that the seller claimed was barely used and would be washed in non-bio etc.

When it arrived the fleece was really bobbled from use, it had stains on the front and inside were crumbs, old chips, a bit of sausage roll, couple of socks and a shoe!

Beansonapost · 29/05/2018 22:57

Number one rule of buying anything secondhand (except eBay)

Inspect... inspect ...inspect!!!!

People are not to be trusted... you had to work for your money don't give it away so easily.

Even in the charity shops!

ToadOfSadness · 29/05/2018 22:58

Sounds as if she got the stuff from a clothing bank or the bags the charity shops leave out for the ragman.

Cutyourshakehole · 29/05/2018 23:02

@Notso
That’s equally gross. Was there a fruit shoot in there ? 🙈

Seller just emailed me and said “ I didn’t hear from you after you got the clothes. Usually people reply with a quick thanks. Hope they were ok for you?”

I’m actually gobsmacked!why do I feel too bad to say they were rank? I feel awful that she thinks she’s done me a favour. I am too soft

OP posts:
Flyme21 · 30/05/2018 17:18

Just reply honestly. They are worth nothing and you'd like your money back. What have you got to lose?

Cutyourshakehole · 30/05/2018 17:34

I’ve already got rid. She won’t pay me back she obviously thinks they were awesome. I won’t buy again without viewing

Louiselouie0890 · 31/05/2018 14:21

Did you not even mention it?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/05/2018 14:26

I actually feel embarrassed for her. Do people have no shame. I wouldn't let myself get talked about.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/05/2018 14:29

Well why should you have emailed her saying thanks. It was a business matter you paid her. It's not like she gave you them for free or do I have the manners of and etiquette a pig.

Obviouspretzel · 31/05/2018 14:38

So you basically have allowed her to mug you off because you didn't have the arsehole to email her back saying the clothes were unacceptable? How do you know she wouldn't have refunded you? In my experience many people do back down when questioned as usually they rely on people not bothering to say anything. I've had similar scenarios.

Butterflykissess · 31/05/2018 14:59

I've bought and sold online on gumtree and have never once had anyone thank me after by e-mail. Very odd.

19lottie82 · 31/05/2018 15:01

I would email her back and just state you were very disappointed as the clothes were not in good condition / dirty. Perhaps include some photos too.

Maintain your dignity and stay polite / factual.

That’s just what I would do though, perhaps others wouldn’t see the point.

Ifonlyfor1day · 31/05/2018 15:02

If you had already got rid, Can you leave a review on gumtree, I am sure the next buyer would appreciate it.

19lottie82 · 31/05/2018 15:13

You can’t leave reviews on Gumtree.

While I feel the OPs pain it really is important to inspect everything you buy before handing over the cash. You have no comeback if you’re not happy with it after this point.

Cutyourshakehole · 01/06/2018 12:31

I’ve just had a look and you can leave reviews now. If you go into my messages there is an option when you click on the conversation you have had with seller, to review and click why there was an issue. For anyone needing in future

OP posts:
Imchangingmyname · 01/06/2018 14:38

Why on earth won't you email her?! You keep saying you won't get your money back but how do you know for sure unless you ask? I'm not sure what else you expect people to say?

expatinscotland · 01/06/2018 14:51

Not sure why you don't email her back.
