To leave skin on my mash

Cooking for 6 and making a cottage pie.

Really cant be fucked to peel all these potatoes. Would it be unreasonable to leave skins on?

Yabu. Boil potatoes, then peel off skins and then mash.

YouAreNotImportant · 25/05/2018 17:28

Yes. I'd call 101 if you presented me with that.

Peel them if you are going to mash them.
If you want to leave the skins on then slice them layer on the top and some dots of butter.

Meepmoop · 25/05/2018 17:35

We always leave the skin on our mash, we call it rustic mash!

GorgeousJaws · 25/05/2018 17:36

Definitely leave it on, it tastes more 'potato-y'.

NannyR · 25/05/2018 17:36

I've started doing this after I saw it suggested on here. It's delicious and the kids I look after prefer it to "peeled mash". You get all the fibre and nutrients from the skin too.

pigsDOfly · 25/05/2018 17:37

I did it once when I couldn't be bothered to peel them and it was only for me. It was horrible. Don't do it.

I always leave the skin on my mash!! You can’t even notice them once cooked, it’s tasty and the skin of the potato is the most nutritious part :)

ToadOfSadness · 25/05/2018 17:39

If you do it don't mash them, they are called 'crushed potatoes' so all you need to do is squash them, they are revolting though.

You could cook them and peel them or microwave them whole and peel them before mashing but proper mash is much nicer.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 25/05/2018 17:41

I always leave the skin on, you can’t even tell once it’s been mashed.

I hate peeling potatoes so I just don’t do it.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 25/05/2018 17:42

Agree - you could do a crushed potato topping with skin but absolutely not mash. Urgh.

Vintagegoth · 25/05/2018 17:46

We call them squashed potatoes.

AnneProtheroe · 25/05/2018 17:47

It's rustic if you leave the skin on. Don't see a problem with it myself!

We always do mash with skin on. Yummy. Much more potato-ey and better for you

speakout · 25/05/2018 17:50

No.

We like smooth mash. I use a potato ricer.

Crushed potatoes are nice, as someone suggested sliced unpeeled potatoes with make a nice crispy topping, but sometimes smooth mash is called for.
You could bake them, scoop out the insides and mash that, but it would be as much trouble as peeling them.

Chwaraeteg · 25/05/2018 17:52

I love skin on mash. It's better for you too.

MonkeysMum75 · 25/05/2018 17:53

Leave the skins on and tell them its "smashed" potatoes instead of mashed - makes you sound posh Wink

wonkylegs · 25/05/2018 17:53

I have RA and find peeling very difficult so we always have mash with skins, lots of butter & pepper
I've never had any complaints, lots of times i've been asked for seconds and i've now been doing it for 20 years

DefinitelyOdd · 25/05/2018 17:54

I hate peeling potatoes so all my mash is with the skin left on. Sometimes I even put grated carrot in there as well to really stick it to the man!

I pretend to my family that I do it for the vitamins and fibre. But mainly I am a lazy sod.

BlueJava · 25/05/2018 17:56

If I want smooth mash I peel them. But just as nice is peel left on, then give them a light bash with butter/garlic/parsley in and put on top of meat.

Luisa27 · 25/05/2018 18:01

Are they Jersey Royaks? Or even a nice Maris Piper? If so leave skin on and then lightly ‘crush’ with a fork - and season well delicious on top of cottage pie 👌

Luisa27 · 25/05/2018 18:02

..oh yes, and stir in lots of chopped parsley ❤️
