I agreed to dog and house sit for a colleague I’m friendly with while she goes to her sisters wedding and is away for a couple of weeks.
I grew up in the country with plenty of animals so perfectly used to most dogs however...
the house is filthy. The oven in particular is disgusting, none of the glasses were remotely clean, I ended up buying some paper cups

YANBU but, you really bought cups rather than wash one?

The hot water doesn’t work, which is apparently fine because she shower is electric but none of the taps run hot.
Nothing was mentioned about the dog sleeping in the bed.
She “forgot” to leave loads of stuff for the dog so I’ve had to buy food/poo bags/ etc.

Just feels like a shit deal and I’m a bit miffed!

istill I pressed send too soon, their is no hot water so you can’t wash up properly. And they really are revolting, the glass on a few of them has gone completely opaque with grease

Can't believe people going on about the bloody glasses on this thread. The house is filthy, I wouldn't want to wash the glasses even if there was hot water.

Sounds miserable OP. Can you text her and tell her you have an emergency and she needs to sort out an alternative ASAP?

Oooh I would be so tempted to give it a really good clean!! I love a filthy house!! Dog can have the bed, is there a spare room?

Unfortunately people have very different ideas when it comes to cleanliness and living environment. On the positive side ...is the dog nice?

Oh dear OP. Sounds awful. Guess you didn't know she was a grot? Not sure you can clean the whole house. It would be hard to do without hot water. I cat sat once and there was a lovely spa bath, Molten Brown products and a great CD collection. So I upscaled for a week! The house did seem to attract flies though...

Even the kettle is grim, without hot water it is quite hard to give the kitchen a deep clean, before I could clean the glasses I’d need to clean the sink, then I’d need to clean the cupboard to have somewhere not disgusting to put them.
I’m three days in to two weeks and feeling s bit overwhelmed by it all. I don’t mind a bit of mess but am particular about clean kitchens and it’s just getting me down a bit.
As is hardly sleeping as the dog takes up the entire bed, and if you try to move to the spare room the dog follows.

Yes, to never doing this again. I wonder if the dirty girl is hoping that you'll clean the place for her? Don't, no matter how much it makes your skin crawl (I hope not literally) - just boil a kettle and wash the few items you're likely to use.

If you're asked to do this again just tell her that it's not possible, don't say sorry. I feel for you OP as it's an embarrassing situation you're in. You probably don't like confrontation, I'd cringe too, when you get home it'll feel like Buckingham Palace by comparison.

I used to house/ pet sit. I stayed in a house like the one you describe 🤮

I have done a fair bit of house sitting through an agency and I have had to deal with stuff that makes your post look tame. Not trying to Elevenerife OP but some people are utter disgusting pigs. I arrived at one job and I was bitten half to death by fleas in the first ten minutes and I left. The place was beyond grimy. The dishwasher had been leaking over the floor for weeks by the looks of it and the smell! I wasn't going to spend the next three weeks trying not to hurl my guts up for what I was going to get paid! The windows were as opaque as the walls. No. Just no.

Honestly, I'd just take the dog to your home. The house will be fine if you lock it up. You could even pop by, every 3rd day or something. Just tell your colleague that sleeping in a strange bed was doing your back in, so you will be going home, with the dog, and that you'll keep an eye on the property. I'd text this morning and get yourself out of there.

Why is there no hot water ? Does she have an immersion switch ? That will heat the water up.

Could you fill up a washing up bowl with hot water from the shower and give the kitchen a bit of a scrub?
I find it quite sad when people live in such dirty conditions. You have to wonder what else is going on in their life

I'd either take the dog home with me, or go to to the shop, buy some bleach spray and cheap dishcloths and scrub the bathroom, kitchen (and kettle) for my own safety. Then could wash up boiling the kettle and clean one glass/plate/bowl so she can see the difference in her washing up verses yours. She sounds clueless.

I can’t take the dog back to mine - I live in a flat with the landlord above me. Not an option sadly or I would have on day one!

Is there an immersion heater in the airing cupboard you can turn on. Maybe she doesn’t turn it on because it’s costly but you can . Have a hunt for an airing cupboard.

Like others, I’d have boiled a kettle and used that to clean what I needed.
