To think you cannot tell gender at 12weeks

Having had my 20w scan today and discovered we are having a boy we announced this to our family.
One member of our family believes he knew that we were having a boy from our 12w scan photo. He believes he can see testes and an erect penis.
Frankly I find this comment pretty disgusting and I’m annoyed that anyone would be looking into my scan, of my baby inside my body in such detail.
I don’t believe that this would be visible so early either.
The sonographer today thought it was amusing that someone would think they could tell from a 12w scan picture and asked to see it. She said that there was no way she could see this and has been doing the job every day for many many years.

I think you can if you have additional blood tests but not from a pic

Cantusethatname · 15/05/2018 20:00

I was told at an 11 week scan 13 years ago that my baby was a boy. And he was.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 15/05/2018 20:01

I’m confused as to why you find it so disgusting, presumably you voluntarily shared a scan picture? So so many people play “guess the sex” of the baby based on various things, I think you are overreacting.

Bluebellsinthegarden · 15/05/2018 20:01

His prediction was from a side on photo not a scan

There is a scan company near me which uses the nub theory and claims 95% accuracy.

Your family member is ridiculous as there aren't proper genitals at that point, just a tube thing that will differentiate.

mumeeee · 15/05/2018 20:02

No I don't think you can tell gender at a 12 week scan.

SuburbanRhonda · 15/05/2018 20:02

It’s sex, not gender.

MindatWork · 15/05/2018 20:02

To be fair if you put you’re scan picture out there ou can’t really control how people look at them. I don’t really understand why people plaster them all over social media...

He does sound like an arsehole, though!

Cazz10 · 15/05/2018 20:03

I once was told at twelve weeks by a sonographer that it was a girl and it was.. but tbh think he went a bit to far with his disturbing comments :)

SoyDora · 15/05/2018 20:03

A side on photo of what? It must have been a scan picture?

MindatWork · 15/05/2018 20:03

your, you

Bluebellsinthegarden · 15/05/2018 20:04

It wasn’t plastered on social media. Personally I find them a bit boring and only interesting for the parents and even then it’s not as though you can identify one scan from the other.
I suppose I find his findings of “an erect penis and testes” crass and unnecessary.

I haven’t found out the sex with either of my children but I think an experienced sonographer can make an educated guess at 12 weeks

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 15/05/2018 20:07

The 12/13 week nub theory is pretty well tested I think, OP. It's not an 'erect penis' at all but the shape of the nub can resemble it - I suppose - with a side-on view.

There's God knows how many forums and threads all over the internet about nub theory for those who want to take an educated guess.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/05/2018 20:08

If you find people commenting on the sex of your fetus distasteful them don't share the scan photos with them.

Easy.

ReginaOcarina · 15/05/2018 20:08

I would find his comments weird too. With my first dc, sonographer said they can have a good guess by the hip measurements because apparently girls are wider apart than boys but thats the only way you could really tell at 12 weeks. Using this method she then informed me that she was sure we were having a boy... Definitely had a girl. Grin

EB123 · 15/05/2018 20:08

Surely it was a scan photo? People do this over scan photos, it is normal to for people to think they know if it will be a girl a or boy.

Bearfrills · 15/05/2018 20:08

With DS2 my 12wk scan was done by the lead sonographer so she knew her stuff, I was measuring 13+4. We got a very good view of the 'nub' and I joked "it's a boy!" because it was a nub that was sticking right up. The sonographer went back for another look, studied it a bit from a few angles, and then agreed with me that it quite probably was a boy. Apparently nub sticking up is around 70% likely a boy and nub pointing down is around 70% chance a girl as it can indicate whether it's on it's way to developing into a penis/testicles or vulva/vagina. She did stress though that this is nowhere near as accurate as sexing a pregnancy at 20+ weeks and not to rush out and buy any "it's a boy" banners. She did mark in my notes that she'd gotten a good look, that we wanted to know the sex at the 20wk scan, and that she thought it was a boy. She ended up doing the 20wk scan too and we had an "aha!" moment when he was definitely a boy.

Ohmydayslove · 15/05/2018 20:10

With you op how crass.

Ignore what else can you do. Some people are just lewd.. Jesus I sound like my mother.

Bluebellsinthegarden · 15/05/2018 20:11

@ChardonnaysPrettySister easier said than done if it’s a family member that asks to see it.
I also didn’t expect such strange analysis.

OP posts:
SimonBridges · 15/05/2018 20:12

What do you mean that it wasn’t a scan picture?

Meltedicicle · 15/05/2018 20:13

I had a private 11 week scan with DD2 as our NHS hospital didn’t offer the nuchal test. Sonographer told me she could sex accurately from 8 weeks (she had scanned herself!). Kept referring to our baby as ‘she’ which she was so yes it is possible to tell at 12 weeks.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/05/2018 20:14

If you show a family member something related to a baby they will comment. It's the law. Grin

Bluebellsinthegarden · 15/05/2018 20:14

It was a photo of the scan but he wasn’t in the scan is what I mean.

OP posts:
MarmaladeIsMyJam · 15/05/2018 20:16

Sex of the baby not gender.

They asked to see it? Came to your house and asked to see it? Or just asked to look at it while you were showing it to other people?
