To think you cannot tell gender at 12weeks

Having had my 20w scan today and discovered we are having a boy we announced this to our family.
One member of our family believes he knew that we were having a boy from our 12w scan photo. He believes he can see testes and an erect penis.
Frankly I find this comment pretty disgusting and I’m annoyed that anyone would be looking into my scan, of my baby inside my body in such detail.
I don’t believe that this would be visible so early either.
The sonographer today thought it was amusing that someone would think they could tell from a 12w scan picture and asked to see it. She said that there was no way she could see this and has been doing the job every day for many many years.

I was told the sex of my 3 children at their 12 week scans at a hospital in Germany. They use the nub theory and was accurate for me and all my friends. I do believe their equipment is better than here though, giving a clearer image of the nub.

My ob/gym could tell sex at 12 weeks for both Dc2 &3. But said was only 95% sure.

The testes don't pass down through the inguinal canal and then into the scrotum until between the 28th and 33rd weeks of development, so I don't know what the fuck your relative thought he could see. Sounds like a wind-up merchant pulling your leg, actually.

Perhaps by "erect" he simply meant that the nub was pointing upwards, rather than downwards, confirming the theory that up = male, down = female, as described by a pp?

zaalitje · 16/05/2018 11:34

There is actual medical research that backs it up. An experienced sonographer getting a good look at the anatomy can correctly state the sex of a 12-14wk foetus in 65-85% of cases.

The trained experienced sonographer, yes.
Auntie Jo who heard a bit about skull theory or your colleague who read something about a nub, less so.

Quite. So many people blathering on about nub theory here - this guy claims he saw meat and two veg on a 12 week scan picture. He. Did. Not.

The problem is, if it’s a boy he’s now going to say ‘I told you so’. MIL was adamant that DC1 was a boy, and she was so smug about it (she’s never wrong apparently) that I really wanted to prove her wrong Grin. It was a girl.

No-one thinks he did apart from him Confused
