I was just at my best friend's final dress fitting and there was another girl in the bridal shop having her first fitting and her family were seeing the dress for the first time.

She came out of the changing room to total silence and not one of the three people she had brought with her had a nice word to say. One (her mum I think) just said 'oh you'll have to do something about the cleavage, it's too much' and then one of the younger ones said 'I didn't think you would go for lace'. The third one didn't say anything but just shared a look with the other.

I wanted to cry for her. The shoo assistant did SUCH a good job of immediately making a big fuss of the bride and telling her she looked beautiful but you could tell she was upset. The others didn't say a single nice thing the whole time she had it on.

Can you believe they couldn't just suck up their opinions and be nice for one minute?! It's not like they can change anything now, she's stuck with this dress! I was really shocked tbh.

Some people really are burdened with hideous families.

Maybe they haven’t realised it’ll be too late to change it? And are thinking they’re doing her a favour by being honest.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 12/05/2018 14:41

Maybe it was the two hundredth one she'd tried on; and all their insistence that they other ones were fabulous were met with bratty footstamping?

isseywithcats · 12/05/2018 14:43

maybe they thought there was a hidden camera and they were on say yes to the dress, poor girl im sure she had picked a lovely dress and at the end of the day a wedding dress is the brides choice not the families,

Lethaldrizzle · 12/05/2018 14:43

It's not exactly mugging an old lady is it?

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:44

But surely it's common knowledge that by the time you're having a fitting the dress is bought? And the context of the appointment made it really clear that it was her dress, not just a random one she was trying on!

If it was my sister/best friend I would be honest with them about their wedding dress if it was bad.

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:46

@isseywithcats haha I love that show, never thought I'd see real life drama though! I have no idea why they hated the dress so much, it was just a normal lace mermaid number as far as I could see. I thought she looked lovely and wanted to tell her!

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:47

@ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo even if it was bought and paid for? I would tell my sister if she was just trying them on but once it was bought I'd lie through my teeth and tell her she looked beautiful if she had made the decision already!

The most unreasonable thing? People not complimenting a dress. Really?

CuppaSarah · 12/05/2018 14:50

Zibbididoo but even so I'm sure you'd have a bit more tact and find something positive along the negative to say.

When I've been dress shopping with friends and family and couldn't imagine acting that way, even if their tastes are vastly different to mine. I hope there's more to the story that we don't know because otherwise it's so sad.

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:51

@MissionItsPossible sorry, did it need a disclaimer to indicate hyperbole was in use? I'll know for next time!

I hear you OP, hopefully her husband - to - be will be more impressed than her spur family.

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:51

@CuppaSarah definitely Sad just keep imagining her on her wedding day putting on the dress and worrying that her mum and bridesmaids hate it!

OP posts:
Oddish · 12/05/2018 14:52

*sour, not spur 😬

Bridesmaidinchief · 12/05/2018 14:52

@Oddish I hope so!!

YANBU. Nasty friends that bride has.

Littlechocola · 12/05/2018 14:52

That’s really sad.

PorkyPortia · 12/05/2018 14:54

I agree with you Bridesmaidinchief

picklemepopcorn · 12/05/2018 14:54

Poor woman. What a shame.

Soundsgood · 12/05/2018 14:56

Maybe the future DH is an arsehole and they have been telling her to LTB for years Wink

SprayingMonsters · 12/05/2018 15:01

YANBU - regardless of how she looked in the dress they should have told her she looked beautiful, then added some ‘buts’

Fresta · 12/05/2018 15:02

Maybe it really was horrible! At least if it was they were honest!

ScreamingValenta · 12/05/2018 15:04

Yes, very mean-spirited. YANBU.

VanillaSugar · 12/05/2018 15:05

Yes, what was the dress like?

VanillaSugar · 12/05/2018 15:06

Was it like this?. ?
