Supermarket divider, is this a thing now?

I was in the supermarket yesterday, put my shopping on the belt, by the time I'd finished loading it the cashier had started scanning. Got to the end and there was a loaf of bread, he asked if it was mine, I said no. The woman behind me said "she didn't put the divider up so I left it" and then as I left, i heard her say "I refused to do it on principle as she (me) hadn't done it for her." Is that really a thing? She wasn't in the queue when I unloaded.

She was a twat. Should have said yes and stolen her bread. That’ll teach her!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 11/05/2018 10:05

Some people are just bloody unbelievably petty. Just praise the Lord you don't have to live in her head 😁

itallhappensforareason · 11/05/2018 10:05

I must admit I do always put the divider on the belt even if there is no one behind me at that moment in time. However it's hardly too much effort to have to do it yourself as someone who joins a queue with no divider!!! Some people are astonishing.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 11/05/2018 10:06

And yy to nicking her loaf!

littlepeas · 11/05/2018 10:07

She was being idiotic, but I do think it is courteous to put the divider down after you've finished loading your shopping - it is no effort and is just a nice thing to do.

TheNoseyProject · 11/05/2018 10:10

That’s not a thing and the checkout person will have been doing an inner confused face or eye roll. This is such a none thing. You get to checkout either divider is there or you extend your arm 10cm and put it there. For most people this is not sonething which is ever thought about.

On principle indeed.

gabsdot · 11/05/2018 10:12

Someone with too much time of their hands for getting outraged about trivial things.

MumofBoysx2 · 11/05/2018 10:13

All that did for her was waste time! I usually put the divider on, but equally I don't get uppity if the person in front of me doesn't. There are other things in life to get uppity about!

WilyMinx · 11/05/2018 10:17

I always put the divider up, even if there's no one behind me in the queue. Seems to be the standard thing to do in my area. However, if the person in front of me didn't, I wouldn't take offense over something so trivial.

JenBarber · 11/05/2018 10:22

You should've taken the loaf and cackled manically whilst eating slice after slice outside the door of the supermarket.

Why didn't you??

spiderlight · 11/05/2018 10:22

I still put the divider down the wrong way round on the vanishingly small off-chance that the person behind me is a MNer who remembers an ancient thread about it.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/05/2018 10:23

I usually put the divider up. But sometimes there isn't one or I'm distracted and forget and start packing my shopping - the person after me just puts it up and I smile at them. Or they don't and I don't.

It's shopping, not internecine war.

UpstartCrow · 11/05/2018 10:24

I would have said 'yes but I've changed my mind about it' and made her watch staff take it back to the shelf.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 11/05/2018 10:25

She is a passive aggressive nitwit, but yoy should always pop a divider there once you've loaded you're shopping on, regardless of whether someone is behind you or not. Thems the rules

Devastatedupset · 11/05/2018 10:25

😂 spider I remember, and still do it also 😂

If the person in front of me doesn't do it, I do it. She's bonkers.

LarkDescending · 11/05/2018 10:28

Let’s hope she posts an AIBU about it.

lalaloopyhead · 11/05/2018 10:29

Well I never, I thought that the next person up put the divider on before loading their shopping. If there isn't one in reach the person in front may pass or place the divider and then in this instance the second person thanks the person in front for doing so.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/05/2018 10:29

I do mutter under my breath if the person in front of me doesn't do it though.

lalaloopyhead · 11/05/2018 10:29

Oh and either way, that woman was bonkers!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/05/2018 10:31

You mean vertically spiderlight? Confused

TheFaerieQueene · 11/05/2018 10:33

How did you not burst out laughing?

Finderscrispy · 11/05/2018 10:33

I secretly find it a bit annoying when someone doesn’t put the divider down, but I would not actually verbalise it to anyone.
Equally I find people who passive aggressively make a show of putting the divider down, when either I have absent mindedly forgotten to, or it is slightly out of reach and I am waiting to get nearer to it, annoying too.
I guess I am a very contradictory person, shopping is a minefield isn’t it.

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 10:34

Most people do it where I live it's not suddenly become a thing just good manners . I would just think OP was a bit rude but I get easily annoyed.
