Supermarket divider, is this a thing now?

I was in the supermarket yesterday, put my shopping on the belt, by the time I'd finished loading it the cashier had started scanning. Got to the end and there was a loaf of bread, he asked if it was mine, I said no. The woman behind me said "she didn't put the divider up so I left it" and then as I left, i heard her say "I refused to do it on principle as she (me) hadn't done it for her." Is that really a thing? She wasn't in the queue when I unloaded.

I probably would have laughed tbg what a passive aggressive twat

EmpressOfSpartacus · 11/05/2018 11:19

Like @spiderlight I put the divider along the belt instead of across it, again in tribute to the thread started by iirc the wonderful @ChaosTrulyReigns. 99% of people turn it 90 degrees, only one person said "ah, the supermarket belt divider game. How very Mumsnet!" I just lifted an eyebrow and smiled.

I remember that thread. I've never quite had the guts to do it though Grin.

How did the cashier know that the bread was possibly not yours?

I can’t think for the life of me what I do. I think I might stick one down if it’s to hand when I’ve finished unloading and I have nothing better to do, but would not bat an eyelid if the person in front had not put it down. That woman must truly have nothing real in life to worry about.

Hissy · 11/05/2018 11:23

Surely it's the person who is joining the queue that needs to put the divider on...

If there were no one behind me, I'd not bother with a divider, if I come behind someone, i get a divider and place my shopping behind it.

I did try the divider thing around the 'wrong' way, it was briefly hilarious :)

butterfly56 · 11/05/2018 11:25

YANBU!
The woman sounds like a right passive aggressive prat!
What a way to carry on in day to day life?!

Bunchofdaffodils · 11/05/2018 11:27

Wow, talk about don’t sweat the small stuff! Don’t think (in my 40+ years) I have EVER given this a single thought!

morningconstitutional2017 · 11/05/2018 11:27

How petty. There are real problems out there and some idiot takes the hump because of a divider? I always put the divider in place - how much energy does it take? I'd say 'get over yourself' - blimey, imagine if she was your MIL. Life's too short.

balsamicbarbara · 11/05/2018 11:29

i heard her say "I refused to do it on principle as she (me) hadn't done it for her."

What an odd woman. Surely in any social situation someone has to do something first. The divider is there for her benefit as well. It'd be like her standing outside refusing to open the door just because you didn't hold it open for her.

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2018 11:30

That’s just cutting her own nose off to spite her face, surely.Grin

I got a right Hmm look from someone behind me in the queue once as there was no divider available on our till, so I reached over and got one from the till next to us, which had plenty.

blackteasplease · 11/05/2018 11:31

How could you possibly have principles about the supermarket divider???

Im a person who can be "on.principle" quite a lot I think but this is bonkers!

UrsulaPandress · 11/05/2018 11:38

I too put the divider vertically since that thread.

Small things amuse.

Starlight7777 · 11/05/2018 11:41

Oh boy there's too many rules nowadays and to push rules onto supermarket conveyor belt divides is simply ridiculous. She's a prat! Don't bother yourself with this, the checkout person most probably thought the same!

Whatshallidonowpeople · 11/05/2018 11:44

I think if I'd been standing there waiting and she'd joined the queue then I would have put it there. I stared at her shaking my head and muttering nutter to myself as she left. Cursing myself for not asking her to explain!!

There was a gap between my shopping and the bread.

Do men get so wound up about this?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/05/2018 11:49

I always put the divider on the belt when I have finished unloading shopping. Mainly because if the person behind doesn't do it and the cashier accidentally scans some of their shopping with mine then it causes a delay whilst it is voided off.

PlumsGalore · 11/05/2018 11:51

I couldn't get wound up over something like this. She clearly has no life.

SabineUndine · 11/05/2018 11:53

Blimey. I do whatever is necessary. If there’s no divider in front of me I put one down, load my shopping and put another after if there’s a second divider available. What bloody infuriates me is if the person in front of me only has one or two things and decides not to put them on the belt, causing confusion when the cashier gets to them. This must drive cashiers nuts too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/05/2018 11:54

Devastated I did it, the woman behind me just turned it round without batting an eyelid. 😭

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 11/05/2018 12:01

I'm the person who shoves them down from the front to to end so people can use them. Especially in Aldi where the cashiers just shunt them up only enough to put the one they're holding back. Blush

Devastatedupset · 11/05/2018 12:03

Keep trying perfectly .... soon you will be rewarded 😂

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/05/2018 12:05

😂

GabsAlot · 11/05/2018 12:06

i usually put one down but not if i hadnt finished yet or was at the packing end already

elQuintoConyo · 11/05/2018 12:07

Come to Spain. We just leave a gap.

Sometimes the UK is utterly foreign to me when i visit home.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/05/2018 12:08

Don't get me started on people who start putting their shopping on before you've finished! Where the fuck am I supposed to put my other 967 things now?
